    Residential Location Preferences. The Significance of Socio-Cultural and Religious Attributes

    The objective of this paper is to explore residential location preferences and how they are related to travel behavior. The literature focuses on the preferences in relation to physical and demographic aspects, such as land uses, facilities, transportation facilities, transportation services, car ownership, income, household size and travel accessibility. However, this study suggests social and cultural issue such as racial diversity which is literally to be a significance context. The case study reported here is based on Iskandar Malaysia’s development region. Reliability Analysis and Factor Analysis are applied to determine that religious and culture are influential in terms of residential location preferences. These findings add a different perspective on travel behavior studies, which are heavily dominated by researches from Western Europe, North America and Australasia. It is suggested that transport researchers need to reject universal conclusions and be clearer about the contexts in which their findings most applied and in multi-cultural scenarios to consider cultural and religious factors more extensively.The objective of this paper is to explore residential location preferences and how they are related to travel behavior.     Creating Smart Urban Landscapes. A Multimedia Platform for Placemaking

    Infrastructure we have become accustomed to using in a different manner by the cyber city is at the heart of what today is known as the "smart city", in which the whole range of technologies are at the service of the city both to improve the quality of life and ensure its sustainability.  The smart approach to the city construction and transformation finds its roots in the concept of Cyberspace. This is a wide open field, still partially undetermined, which cannot be reduced to one of its components. It serves to interconnect all the devices concerning creation, recording, communication and simulation. In order to illustrate the smart approach to placemaking - meant as the art of making place for people - and implicitly the achieving of a better quality of life, the new DIV@TER multimedia platform, in course of development, is proposed. Div@ter is a dynamic and interactive platform for the complex-sensitive management of the qualitative data of a territory, whose research project has been financed by POR FESR Lazio Region 2007/2013 Axis 1- Activity 1.1. The synthesis of the Esplanade area in Helsinki case study will complete the paper. This case is in line with the projects and relative goals carried out by Forum Virium Helsinki 2015, which is developing new urban digital services. Among these, the Smart City Project Area is devoted to the development of digital urban services for easier travelling and living in the city through the use of mobile devices which are integrated into everyday objects and activities

    Alternative Charges on Private Vehicles as a Way of Managing Urban Mobility

    In this article, we reflect on proposals for the use of urban tolls on private vehicles as a form of urban mobility management. The methodology used exploratory research for the development of a theoretical basis and a table was drawn up showing the experience in various countries.     Entropy and the City. GHG Emissions Inventory: a Common Baseline for the Design of Urban and Industrial Ecologies

    From a thermodynamic point of view, the attribution of the adjective sustainable to an open system like the city is, at least, very problematic. The biosphere is a closed system, kept far from the thermodynamic equilibrium by the flow of energy coming from the sun. The biosphere maintains and increases its internal order dispersing entropy, generated by all the internal processes, as thermal infrared radiation. But then, the elegant picture of sustainability given by thermodynamics can not be applied to open systems, and notably to the city, without raising both theoretical and practical problems. The city is almost by definition a place of consumption and of degradation of potentials, kept in local equilibrium by external flows of matter and energy, but at the same time plays a key role in shaping and maintaining the global flows of matter, energy, and information, and this role must be taken into account when interpreting thermodynamic-based descriptions. The urban capital probably represents the greatest investment made by mankind. Materials have been harvested from the earth crust and from the natural systems, and have been concentrated and ordered in the city. But the "city" is not the infrastructure: it's concept of a different logical type. The city is a further level of organization that produces services of higher level. The urban infrastructure is necessary, but not sufficient to produce the city services. The city is the most important social and health "device". A proper accounting must consider the city-performance of the urban infrastructure, beyond the mere, local energy and carbon efficiency. In this context, local GHG accounting is proposed as a rather simple and useful basis to ground process-wise studies and projects, including the creation of effective local industrial ecologies, in a continuous city-making effort toward higher sustainability

    The Design of Signalised Intersections at Area Level. Models and Methods

    In this paper the results of the PRIN research project named “Guidelines for the urban transportation network analysis and design: methods and models for designing at area level the signalised intersections” are summarised. In the research project, several problems of signal settings optimisation at area level were studied and some methods and model for optimising the signal setting parameters were proposed. All proposed methods were tested on a real-scale case: the road network of Benevento. The results of the research showed that the proposed methods are able to solve the problem in acceptable computing times also on real-scale networks

    Piano dei Servizi. Proposal for Contents and Guideline

    As an endless melting pot of experimentation and innovation, cities must reorganize and retrain compared to the growing new needs. In the light of the actual urban debate, it can be useful to do an in-depth study. In fact, the quality of urban life and collective well-being cannot be separated from the identification of a network of public services and facilities, that organizes and structures the city. That network is not resolved in the themes of pre-school and compulsory education, public interest, green spaces, car parks and public interest, but rather has a wider variety of types. Noting the failure of attempts to define, a priori, a quantity of universally valid services, it is necessary to rethink the ways and criteria of most of the infrastructural facilities. The "Piano dei Servizi" is the tool for the implementation of a concrete policy of services for public interest, and it means the transition between a planning standard, in terms of quantity, in a standard that meets quality requirements. It represents a specific section of the urban development plan, which has to consider problems and shortcomings, and try to solve them by finding opportunities which physical locations offer. In this way a planning standard is not configured as an abstract quantity, but as the material composition of the urban plan, which results in a land use and land development proposal

    Smart Policies and Metropolitan Vision: the Spatial Dimension in the Experience of Amsterdam Smart City Platform

    Il paper vuole presentare i principali progetti e le politiche sviluppate nei tempi più recenti dalla Municipalità di Amsterdam nel campo delle politiche energetiche, con riferimento in particolare ai progetti promossi all’interno dell’esperienza della Amsterdam Smart City (ASC) Platform. I progetti e le politiche analizzati ci appaiono rilevanti per almeno tre diversi aspetti e per le questioni che questi sollevano: I. per l'obiettivo di ricondurre le politiche e i progetti della Amsterdam Smart City alla costruzione di una visione territoriale per l'area metropolitana di Amsterdam; II. per il forte nesso, presente in questa esperienza, fra le politiche di gestione dell'energia sul territorio e le scelte di pianificazione spaziale e di disegno urbano compiute dall'Amministrazione; III. Infine, per l'intento di consolidare la piattaforma della ASC come il luogo dove diversi soggetti sono direttamente coinvolti e interagiscono nella gestione del bene pubblico, ciascuno con le proprie istanze e peculiarità. Riprendendo i dati più recenti e significativi dell'attività della Amsterdam Smart City Platform il paper riflette su quali siano gli esiti a tre anni dall'attivazione dei progetti e delle sperimentazioni, dal punto di vista della strutturazione di un network, degli obiettivi di risparmio energetico prefissati e del consolidarsi di alcune scelte spaziali inerenti sia l’intero territorio sia le politiche della ASC.The paper aims at presenting the main projects and policies recently developed by the Municipality of Amsterdam in the field of energy policies, with particular reference to the projects promoted in the context of the ASC - Amsterdam Smart City Platform. The analyzed projects and policies seem to be relevant for at least three aspects and for the matters raised by them:I. for the aim to connect policies and projects of the Amsterdam Smart City with the definition of a territorial vision for the Amsterdam metropolitan area;II. for the strong connection characterizing this experience between energy-management policies on the territory and the management’s choices related to urban planning and urban design;III. finally, the experience is relevant in relation with the consolidation of the ACS’s platform as a place where several individuals are directly involved in the management of public good and where all requests and peculiarities contribute to defining a common planning process on the energy and environmental subjects in the urban and metropolitan area.  Based on the latest, most significant information of the activities performed by Amsterdam Smart City Platform, the paper focuses on the results after four years since the projects and tests have been carried out, on the basis of a network structuring, predetermined energy-saving targets and of some space-related choices regarding the whole territory as well as ASC’s policies

    Considering Resilience: Steps Towards an Assessment Framework

    As threats from climate change related hazards increase in cities around the world, communities are faced with an urgent requirement for self-evaluation. It is essential to expose and assess potential hazards facing cities, as well as to consider potential impacts and responses. While the promotion of efficiency and promise of protection have been common approaches to hazards in the past, recent events have exposed weaknesses in existing tactics. It has also become more apparent that existing mitigation efforts will be insufficient to prevent some level of climate change, associated hazards, and impacts. Complete protection against all threats is not only impossible but potentially hazardous, as extreme or unanticipated events can exceed the capacity for defence, potentially resulting in catastrophic failures. From this realization of the fallibility of the existing paradigm, resilience has emerged as a useful concept for framing the response of cities to an expanding collection of potential threats. The aim of this article is to consider resilience as it applies to cities, their architecture and infrastructure systems, subsystems, and components, as well as their inhabitants. Resilience characteristics are identified and considered in order to inform the eventual development of a resilience framework with which to assess architecture and infrastructure resilience. This state of the art is instrumental to determine the conditions under which architecture and infrastructure resilience can be defined and measured, in order to guide the consideration of attributes and determine suitable criteria to select and elaborate indicators to help guide future actions and investments.
