    Staten Island Hospital’s First Three Motorized Emergency Vehicles

    Based on the National EMS Museum, throughout World War I and II, new ambulance designs and response procedures ensured more wounded soldiers were removed to field hospitals and survived the horrific injuries they suffered during battle. Things like shocks, swinging cots and on-board medical equipment started to make regular appearances in ambulances designed and built during wartime. Staten Island Hospital’s first three motorized emergency vehicles, purchased in 1912, 1914, and 1917.     After initial groundbreaking ceremonies in 1976, a historic one-day move took place on April 7, 1979, to the new Ocean Breeze campus. Pictured here, the National Guard safeguarded caravans of ambulances as the Staten Island Hospital clinical team, under CEO Barry Zeman, transported patients and equipment from the Castleton Avenue complex to the new ultra-high-tech facility at 475 Sea View Avenue.
