Modelos Pedagógicos y Metodológicos para los Estudios de Género en Clases de Pregrado
En este ensayo, se examina una aproximación pedagógica y metodológica al teatro como herramienta en cursos de pregrado a través del análisis de “El bigote” y “La casa chica”, dos obras cortas de la afamada dramaturga mexicana Sabina Berman. Ambas piezas se prestan como ejemplos para estudiar una extensa variedad de temas inherentes a la dramaturgia contemporánea y al discurso feminista latinoamericano, tales como la dinámica entre poder y género, machismo y marianismo, consumismo y clases sociales y el aspecto performático del género. Para enriquecer la comprensión de los estudiantes y profundizar en los temas relacionados con la identidad de género, los estudiantes leen y analizan textos de Judith Butler, Hélène Cixous y Michel Foucault.
This essay examines a methodological and pedagogical approach to theater as a tool in undergraduate courses through the analysis of “El bigote” and “La casa chica,” two short plays by renowned Mexican playwright, Sabina Berman. Both plays lend themselves for the study of a wide variety of topics related to contemporary drama as well as Latin American feminist discourse, such as power and gender dynamics, machismo and marianismo, consumerism and social classes, as well as the performative nature of gender. To enhance students’ comprehension and to deepen their understanding of topics related to gender identity, students read and analize some texts by Judith Butler, Hélène Cixous, and Michel Foucault

PyScan: Interfacing Laboratory Instruments with Python
Laboratory instruments can be interfaced with and controlled from personal computers. Several programs to scan lasers and acquire data have been written by students in the Polik Lab. However, computer hardware and software change more rapidly (3-5 years) than instrument lifetime (20 years). Thus, programs must be replaced to run on modern computers and operating systems. This can be done to minimize dependence on specific hardware and software. PyScan is a laser instrument interface program intended to replace the Polik Lab’s current software. It allows the user to control the laser, setup a scan, acquire data, and store the data for subsequent analysis. PyScan is written in Python 3 in order to run on various computer platforms and access a variety of data acquisition products. This flexibility insulates it from future hardware and software changes
Bio-inspired Sensing and Actuating Architectures for Feedback Control of Civil Structures
Civil structures, such as buildings and bridges, are constantly at risk of failure due to external environmental loads, such as earthquakes or strong winds. To minimize the effects of these loads, active feedback control systems have been proposed but such systems still face numerous challenges which impede their widespread adoption. In order to overcome many of these challenges, inspiration can be drawn from the signal processing and actuating techniques employed by the biological central nervous system to develop a bio-inspired control algorithm. In this study the front-end, signal processing techniques employed by biological sensory systems, and in particular the mammalian auditory system, are drawn upon in order to alleviate computations at the actuation node. This results in a simplistic control law that is a weighted combination of input information about the structure\u27s response such that F = WN , where F is the applied control force, W is a pre-determined weighting matrix, and N is a deconstructed representation of the structural response to the applied excitation. There is no empirical solution for deriving an optimal weighting matrix, W , and in this study numerous methods are explored in order to determine values for this matrix that produce the most effective control. These methods include particle swarm optimization, artificial neural networks, and optimal control theory. The various weighting matrices are integrated into the proposed bio-inspired control algorithm and applied in simulation to a five story benchmark structure. These methods are also compared to a traditional linear quadratic regulator (LQR) to gain insight into the overall performance of the bio-inspired control algorithm. Of the three training techniques, the particle swarm optimization technique offers the most effective control which is comparable in performance to the traditional LQR
Host Lipids in Positive-Strand RNA Virus Genome Replication
Membrane association is a hallmark of the genome replication of positive-strand RNA viruses [(+)RNA viruses]. All well-studied (+)RNA viruses remodel host membranes and lipid metabolism through orchestrated virus-host interactions to create a suitable microenvironment to survive and thrive in host cells. Recent research has shown that host lipids, as major components of cellular membranes, play key roles in the replication of multiple (+)RNA viruses. This review focuses on how (+)RNA viruses manipulate host lipid synthesis and metabolism to facilitate their genomic RNA replication, and how interference with the cellular lipid metabolism affects viral replication

Functional and Anatomical Variations in Retinorecipient Brain Areas in \u3ci\u3eArvicanthis niloticus\u3c/i\u3e and \u3ci\u3eRattus norvegicus\u3c/i\u3e: Implications for the Circadian and Masking Systems
Daily rhythms in light exposure influence the expression of behavior by entraining circadian rhythms and through its acute effects on behavior (i.e., masking). Importantly, these effects of light are dependent on the temporal niche of the organism; for diurnal organisms, light increases activity, whereas for nocturnal organisms, the opposite is true. Here we examined the functional and morphological differences between diurnal and nocturnal rodents in retinorecipient brain regions using Nile grass rats (Arvicanthis niloticus) and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (Rattus norvegicus), respectively. We established the presence of circadian rhythmicity in cFOS activation in retinorecipient brain regions in nocturnal and diurnal rodents housed in constant dark conditions to highlight different patterns between the temporal niches. We then assessed masking effects by comparing cFOS activation in constant darkness (DD) to that in a 12:12 light/dark (LD) cycle, confirming light responsiveness of these regions during times when masking occurs in nature. The intergeniculate leaflet (IGL) and olivary pretectal nucleus (OPN) exhibited significant variation among time points in DD of both species, but their expression profiles were not identical, as SD rats had very low expression levels for most timepoints. Light presentation in LD conditions induced clear rhythms in the IGL of SD rats but eliminated them in grass rats. Additionally, grass rats were the only species to demonstrate daily rhythms in LD for the habenula and showed a strong response to light in the superior colliculus. Structurally, we also analyzed the volumes of the visual brain regions using anatomical MRI, and we observed a significant increase in the relative size of several visual regions within diurnal grass rats, including the lateral geniculate nucleus, superior colliculus, and optic tract. Altogether, our results suggest that diurnal grass rats devote greater proportions of brain volume to visual regions than nocturnal rodents, and cFOS activation in these brain regions is dependent on temporal niche and lighting conditions
