Failure of Communication in Earnest Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants”

“Hills Like White Elephants”, one of Earnest Hemingway’s short stories included in the short story collection Men Without Women, displays a different aspect of this assumed male chauvinist author. As to whether he really advocated male chauvinist attitudes there are certain disagreements among the critics, but regarding this specific short story they generally agree on the fact that he sides with Jig, i.e. the female character of “Hills Like White Elephants”. It is one of the few short stories of Hemingway in which a female character is assigned the role of the protagonist. In this story, we are led through a young couple’s argument; an argument with no definite resolution. Apparently there is something “wrong” with one of them or their relationship; the argument & counter-argument set them to two parties. As a rule, it is the stronger party that turns the outcome of the argument to their advantage and usually leaves the weak party with “nothing”. But who is the strong party here? This paper intends to study the failure in communication in Hemingway’s short story “Hills Like White Elephants”

This study aimed to examine the association between math anxiety and students' comprehension quality based on Skemp's Theory and describe the impact of math anxiety level on students' comprehension quality. This survey research with a quantitative approach involved a population of grade 8 students in junior high schools in Bantul Regency. The sample size was 386 students using stratified proportional random sampling technique. Math anxiety and the quality of student understanding were measured using a questionnaire instrument and description questions tailored to the ratio and proportion material. This instrument has been declared valid and reliable. The data analysis technique is correspondence analysis using cross tabulation to see the frequency distribution in each category and chi-square test to check whether or not there is an association. The results of the study with a 5% significance level showed that (1) the chi square value was 0,36 (< 0,05) which means that there is an association between math anxiety and the quality of students' understanding; (2) the higher the level of math anxiety experienced by students, the lower their tendency to build relational understanding and vice versa, students with high math anxiety tend to develop instrumental understanding or even experience incomprehension of the material

Evaluation of Landscape Design in Urban Parks and Urban Forests on Thermal Comfort

The city of Banda Aceh is experiencing significant land use change due to rapid development, which causes an increase in land surface temperature and encourages climate change. One of the mitigation measures that can be taken is the provision of Green Open Spaces (GOS) such as parks and urban forests that function to maintain microclimate balance. However, current green space designs tend to replace soft elements such as grass with dark-colored hard pavement that has a low albedo, thus exacerbating the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. This study evaluates the landscape design of thermal comfort in BNI Tibang Urban Forest and BNI Trembesi Urban Park through a quantitative approach of observation, field measurements and questionnaires. The variables analyzed included landscape elements (grass, trees, soil, water, concrete, paving blocks, and ceramics) and microclimate variables (air temperature, ground surface temperature, average radiant temperature, globe temperature, air velocity and humidity). Vegetation distribution was analyzed with NDVI, while park configuration and material variations were simulated using ENVI-met, with the PET comfort index as an indicator. Results show that vegetated areas have 2-3°C lower temperatures and provide better thermal comfort. Simulation and questionnaire data support these findings, where high vegetation density reduces temperature by 1.8°C and improves thermal comfort. Therefore, landscape design that prioritizes soft elements and reduces the use of hard elements can improve thermal comfort and become a reference in the development of adaptive green spaces in urban areas, especially in Banda Aceh

RFID-Based Library Service Automation as Online and Self-Service Support

This study explores the development and implementation of an RFID-based library automation system at Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) in response to the increasing need for efficient, technology-driven academic library services. As the central hub for intellectual and research activities, academic libraries are undergoing significant transformation due to the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach and system development methodology, the research identifies core user needs, system challenges, and solutions for enhancing service delivery. The proposed system, developed using the Waterfall model with PHP and MySQL, includes digital catalog access, online borrowing and returning, reservation management, and administrative functions. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is employed to automate circulation services, reduce manual workload, and improve user experience through self-service stations and real-time tracking. The system also incorporates autonomous features and security enhancements to streamline operations. Findings indicate that RFID-based systems significantly enhance library efficiency, user autonomy, and resource management. However, challenges such as implementation costs and digital literacy gaps remain. The study concludes that RFID technology holds transformative potential for modern academic libraries and offers a replicable model for other institutions seeking to adopt similar innovations

This research was development research proposed by Brog and Gall with seven steps, namely 1) preliminary research and information collection, 2) planning, 3) initial product development, 3) initial field test, 4) revision of initial field test results, 5) main field trial, and 6) revision of main field test results. Data collection used material validation test questionnaires, media validation test questionnaires, guidance and counseling teacher test questionnaires, interviews, documentation, and career planning scales. Material experts, media experts, and guidance and counseling teachers carried out the feasibility test of the guide. The population in this study amounted to 76 students, and the subject of a trial of 10 guidance counseling teachers was used to determine this study's effectiveness level. The data analysis technique used quantitative dataanalysis. The results of this study show that: 1) the guidance of modeling techniques to improve students' career planning based on the results of the assessment of material experts obtained a score of 73 with the feasible category; the results of the assessment of media experts obtained a score of 83 with the feasible category; and all guidance and counseling teacher practitioners give a score with a range of 69 ≤ S ≤ 84 with the very feasible category; 2) the modeling technique guide to improve students' career planning is effective based on the career planning scale. The effectiveness test conducted on 76 students resulted in an average score of 31.26 for the pretest and 41.2 for the posttest, so it can be concluded that the modeling technique guidebook for career planning is declared effective

Characteristics of Criminal Liability of Political Parties in Corruption Offenses

Political parties play a strategic role in advancing democracy, but they are increasingly faced with issues that cast a negative light on their organizations. These issues include, first, the involvement of political parties in various corruption cases, which damages their public image and reduces public trust in them; second, the legal debate surrounding the criminal liability of political parties implicated in corruption cases; and third, the challenge of imposing criminal sanctions on political parties or corporations as legal entities proven to have committed corruption offenses. Political parties are associations composed of individuals, an element defining them as organizations or management bodies within the parties. Political parties manage independent finances and are considered part of “organized wealth” and a “legal entity” capable of acting on their own behalf. This establishes that, fundamentally, political parties possess characteristics akin to corporations in the context of corruption offenses

The outcome showed that speaking performance and motivations had a relationship, with a significant value of 0.449. The result indicated that there was a significant relationship among self-esteem and speaking performance with a significant value of 0.384. Therefore, the results indicated that the null hypotheses were rejected and alternative hypotheses were accepted.

Grammaticalization of Marine Animals as a Living Environment: A Case Study in Eco-Linguistics of the Bima Language

This study analyzes the grammaticalization process in naming marine animals in Bima language, especially the use of prefixes {ka-}, {sa-}, and marine animals that do not have prefixes Ø the use of these prefixes reflects the physical characteristics and ecological relationships between Bima people and their marine environment. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection methods in the form of interviews, observation, and documentation. The data obtained was then analyzed with an ecolinguistic approach to understand how language represents human relationships with nature, as well as grammaticalization theory to reveal structured linguistic patterns in naming marine animals. The results show that the {ka-} prefix is consistently used for 'hard-shelled animals', while the {sa-} prefix is used to symbolize 'soft-shelled/non-shelled marine animals'. This study confirms that the grammaticalization process in Bima language not only explains the physical characteristics of marine animals, but also the relationship between Bima people and their marine ecosystem. In addition, this study also reveals that marine animals that are not grammaticalized reflect their position outside the human environment, but are still an important part of fulfilling their needs
