    A System Engineering Approach in the Analysis of Ionic Liquids Properties

    Room temperature ionic liquids (RTIL) are ionic compounds, comprised of a cation and anion, in the liquid state at temperatures below 100°C. There are estimated 1018 anion and cation combinations, which can create RTILs with unique properties. While the ionic character of RTILs made them attractive in a wide variety of electrochemical applications, their behaviors under electrochemical conditions are not well understood. In this research, we developed a RTIL testbed to investigate how RTILs differ from molecular solvents and electrolytes in electrochemical systems through the study of the effects of their morphology and chemical properties on the electron transfer processes. The test bed is composed of three modules: Electrochemistry, Material characterization, Computational. All modules have been completely developed, verified, and integrated and two of them, i.e., Electrochemistry and Material characterization have been validated in this dissertation. To evaluate the proposed system, experiments were performed on solutions of a redox active species in RTILs. It was found that it is possible to investigate the RTIL\u27s morphology and chemical properties\u27 impact on the electron transfer processes of the solute based on the outcomes and evaluations of tests performed by the RTIL testbed

    Longitudinal Education and Career Outcomes of a Cancer Research Training Program for Underrepresented Students: The Meharry-Vanderbilt-Tennessee State University Cancer Partnership

    This study examined longitudinal education and career outcomes of the Meharry-Vanderbilt-Tennessee State University Cancer Partnership, the longest-running National Cancer Institute (NCI) Comprehensive Partnerships in Advancing Cancer Health Equity (CPACHE) program site in the United States. Degree completion rates were calculated and progression along the entire postsecondary “pipeline” was quantified for 204 participants recruited between 2011 and 2020. For participants who had entered the workforce, career outcomes were also analyzed. Relative to comparison data, participants completed degrees and progressed through the higher education “pipeline” to earn advanced degrees at remarkably high rates; the majority entered careers in which they support or conduct cancer research. The latter is important, because most participants identify with demographic categories currently underrepresented in the cancer research workforce. This article makes two contributions to knowledge on research training programs for underrepresented students: 1) it quantifies participants’ progression along the entire postsecondary education pipeline as well as into the workforce, and 2) it identifies points where participants are most prone to exit the pipeline rather than progress. We identify two types of exits—permanent and temporary—and offer empirically supported operational definitions for both. Evaluators may find the quantitative model and/or definitions useful for analyzing similar programs

    South Asian Immigrant Women\u27s Experiences of Empowerment in the United States

    Increasingly, women have been traveling outside of their countries of origin to escape gender bias, discrimination, poverty, and patriarchy. However, there was a lacuna of research on the experiences of these immigrant women when they moved to other countries such as the United States. This study addressed the need to integrate a gender perspective into research on the experiences of immigrant women seeking empowerment. Women empowerment has been a trending topic in recent times and this study aimed to understand the experiences of South Asian immigrant women and explored their expectation of gender equality in United States. Their experiences on parameters of woman empowerment such as economic, socio-cultural, familial/interpersonal, legal, political, and psychological factors were discussed. The study concluded by sharing recommendations based primarily on the experiences of the women in this study

    Machine Learning Based Practical and Efficient DDoS Attacks Detection System for IoT

    The increasing Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on the Internet of Things (IoT) is leading to the need for an efficient detection system. Although much research has been conducted to detect DDoS attacks on traditional networks, such as machine learning (ML) based approaches that have improved accuracy and confidence, the limited bandwidth and computation resources in IoT networks restrict the application of ML, especially deep learning (DL) based solutions that require extensive input data. In order to appropriately address the security issues in the resources-constrained IoT network, this research is aimed to reduce the input data dimensions by extracting a subset of the most relevant features from the original features and using this subset as an input to the implemented Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model to detect DDoS attacks on IoT without degrading the detection performance. Developed a hybrid feature selection approach that uses Mutual Information (MI), Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Chi-Squared, L1-based feature selection, and Tree-based feature selection algorithms is designed to identify important data features and reduce the data inputs needed for detection. A CNN model is implemented to test and validate the hybrid feature selection approach and to provide analysis for all selection methods. Simulation results show that detection accuracy is improved using the proposed hybrid feature selection approach. The training time is much less than the combination of each individual feature selection method. Results also show that the proposed system is practical and efficient for the detection of DDoS attacks in IoT resource-constrained environments

    Imagined Interactions and Gottman Method: Predicting Relational Dissatisfaction

    Romantic relationships have been studied by many researchers over the years.John and Julie Gottman were able to predict the potential divorce of couples with over 90percent accuracy through qualitative research studies (Gottman, 1994a; Gottman, 1994b;Gottman & Levenson, 1992, 2000; Gottman & Gottman, 2020). A common method ofboth individual and marital counseling is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Byimproving communication with one’s partner and establishing commitment to change,CBT often led to improved marital satisfaction (Ebadi et al., 2018). An area that had yetto be explored in depth was how internal conversations one has about their partner mayaffect marital satisfaction. This study took a quantitative approach to how one’s imaginedinteractions (II’s) and their overall relationship satisfaction was mediated by Gottman’s 4Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Criticism and contempt both mediated the relationshipbetween valence II’s and relationship satisfaction, as well as defensiveness mediated therelationship between conflict management II’s and relationship satisfaction. The onehypothesis that was not supported was that stonewalling did not mediate the relationshipbetween catharsis II’s and relationship satisfaction. This study showed that one’simagined interactions about their partner and the behaviors in which they engaged led toan overall negative relationship satisfaction with a small effect size. This study aimed forclinicians to be able to quantitatively understand a couple’s cognitions through imaginedinteractions, and their actions through Gottman’s 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse, to beable to provide more tailored therapeutic treatment through a CBT lens

    Intergenerational Transmission of Trauma in Vietnamese Refugee Families

    The United States has long become home to Vietnamese refugees. Though resettling comes with its own stressors, refugees may have also experienced trauma before arriving to the U.S. The experience of premigration trauma may have consequences not only on the refugees themselves but on their U.S.-born offspring as well. This study investigated intergenerational transmission of trauma in Vietnamese refugee families. This quantitative study examined the mediating effects of attachment between perceived parental trauma and emotional distress in the U.S.-born adult children of Vietnamese refugees. The sample was composed of 301 second-generation Vietnamese American adults, who had at least one parent who was a Vietnamese refugee. The findings demonstrated that anxious attachment mediated the relationship between both perceived maternal and paternal trauma and the emotional distress of adult children. Avoidant attachment did not mediate the relationship between paternal trauma and emotional distress. However, avoidant attachment did have a mediating effect in the relationship between maternal trauma and emotional distress in participants. The findings provide more nuanced information about Vietnamese refugee family experience in the U.S., instead of lumping all Southeast Asian refugee families into one category. These results may help clinicians better assess the needs of second-generation Vietnamese American clients

    Influence of soil and foliar application of fulvic acid on yield parameters of organically grown bell peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) under open-field conditions in Tennessee

    Due to increased demand for healthier fresh produce by consumers, growers are seeking for environmental friendlier techniques to improve sustainability and profitability in organic vegetable production. The use of fulvic acid biostimulant coupled with different mode of application can contribute to enhanced plant growth and high-quality yield. A field experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications at the organic farm of Tennessee State University in summer 2021. The influence of foliar and soil application of fulvic acid biostimulant on yield of organically grown bell peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) was investigated. Transplants were raised from organic seeds of bell peppers var. Revolution F1 in a greenhouse and transferred in the field on plastic mulch with drip irrigation. Fulvic acid was applied as a soil drench to the plant root area and foliar spray on the leaf surface at different rates (0, 0.3, 0.7, 1, 1.4 fl oz/gal) three times a week starting from two weeks after transplanting. Results indicate increased yield in response to foliar application of fulvic acid and showed significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) among treatments. Foliar 0.7 fl oz/gal led to highest yield (9.41 lb/plant) with subsequent increase in yield at soil 0.7 fl oz/gal (9.21 lb/plant) and foliar 1 fl oz/gal (9.09 lb/plant) as compared to control and other treatments. Foliar 0.7 and 1 fl oz/gal also led to highest number of fruits (30 fruits/plant). Soil concentration at 0.7 and 1 fl oz/gal resulted in statistically significant mean fruit weight (0.33 lb). Fruit length and fruit diameter showed no significant difference in control and fulvic acid treatments. Preliminary trial suggests that foliar application of fulvic acid was effective and could be used to increase marketable yield in organic bell pepper production
