    Influence of Interracial Couple Vlogs on Black Women’s Attitudes Toward Interracial Dating

    Black women have historically been less likely to seek romantic partnerships outside of their race since they were made legal in the United States in 1967 with the ruling of Loving vs. Virginia. Despite this low number, interracial couple vlogs with Black women and men of other races have risen in popularity on social media. The influence of vloggers on viewer’s decision making has been previously explored, but less focus has been placed on understanding how learning about how other’s date influences a consumer’s dating attitudes. This study examined 74 Black women’s opinions on interracial after watching vlogs on YouTube featuring couples of different races. To explore the role of the centrality aspect of racial identity on interracial dating attitudes, participants also completed a racial identity measure. As hypothesized, respondents reported more positive attitudes toward interracial dating after exposure to couples’ vlogs across every group. However, centrality was not found to significantly influence participants openness to date outside of their race

    Nitrogen Fertilizer Effects on Yield, Oil, Protein Content, Pollinators of Winter Canola

    Winter canola is an oilseed crop that can produce edible oil, animal feed byproducts and biofuel. Excessive nitrogen could lead to high input costs, excessive vegetative growth and decreases in crop yield. The populations of pollinators is decreasing worldwide. There is very little information on optimum nitrogen rates for winter canola production in Tennessee and about pollinators that frequent winter canola during flowering. The objectives of this study were to: 1) determine the effect of N application rates on pollinator type, canola yield, and oil and protein content of specific winter canola varieties and 2) to determine if chemical attractants for pollinators are released by winter canola flowers and if they are affected by variety or N application rate. For the first objective, study was conducted in Springfield, TN during 2020–2021 with three cultivars and five N application rates. Yield, oil and protein content of different cultivars were determined. Pollinator diversity was recorded by installing yellow sticky traps in the field. For the second objective, the study was conducted in Ashland City, TN during 2018-2019 and three varieties were planted under different N rates. Flowers were analyzed using an electronic nose to detect volatile compounds. Seed yield was significantly higher at 112, 168 and 224 kg N ha–1 and Phoenix CL and Hekip had higher yields. Seed oil was highest at 0 kg N ha–1 and Phoenix CL and Plurax CL had higher seed oil content. Seed protein content was highest at 224 kg N ha–1 and Hekip and Plurax CL had higher protein content. Pollinator abundance was highest on the first date of insect collection (April 08th) and at 0 kg N ha−1 but was statistically similar to 168 kg N ha–1. The captured insect of greatest abundance was the mining bee (Andrena spp.). Volatiles produced by winter canola flowers may serve as pollinator attractants, such as 2-methylpropanal, 1-hexanol, 2,3-pentanedione, and ethyl 3-(methylthiopropanoate). N rates at 0 and 56 kg N ha–1in Hekip, 0 to 112 kg N ha–1 in Phoenix CL, and 168 and 224 kg N ha–1 in Inspiration may provide advantages for attracting pollinator

    Detection of Ongoing Mass Loss from HD 63433c, a Young Mini-Neptune

    We detect Lyα absorption from the escaping atmosphere of HD 63433c, a R = 2.67R⊕, P = 20.5 day mini-Neptune orbiting a young (440 Myr) solar analog in the Ursa Major Moving Group. Using Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, we measure a transit depth of 11.1 ± 1.5% in the blue wing and 8 ± 3% in the red. This signal is unlikely to be due to stellar variability, but should be confirmed by an upcoming second transit observation with HST. We do not detect Lyα absorption from the inner planet, a smaller R = 2.15R⊕ mini-Neptune on a 7.1 day orbit. We use Keck/NIRSPEC to place an upper limit of 0.5% on helium absorption for both planets. We measure the host star\u27s X-ray spectrum and mid-ultraviolet flux with XMM-Newton, and model the outflow from both planets using a 3D hydrodynamic code. This model provides a reasonable match to the light curve in the blue wing of the Lyα line and the helium nondetection for planet c, although it does not explain the tentative red wing absorption or reproduce the excess absorption spectrum in detail. Its predictions of strong Lyα and helium absorption from b are ruled out by the observations. This model predicts a much shorter mass-loss timescale for planet b, suggesting that b and c are fundamentally different: while the latter still retains its hydrogen/helium envelope, the former has likely lost its primordial atmosphere

    Topological changes in the magnetic field of LQ Hya during an activity minimum

    Aims. Previous studies have related surface temperature maps, obtained with the Doppler imaging (DI) technique, of LQ Hya with long-term photometry. Here, we compare surface magnetic field maps, obtained with the Zeeman Doppler imaging (ZDI) technique, with contemporaneous photometry, with the aim of quantifying the star’s magnetic cycle characteristics. Methods. We inverted Stokes IV spectropolarimetry, obtained with the HARPSpol and ESPaDOnS instruments, into magnetic field and surface brightness maps using a tomographic inversion code that models high signal-to-noise ratio mean line profiles produced by the least squares deconvolution (LSD) technique. The maps were compared against long-term ground-based photometry acquired with the T3 0.40 m Automatic Photoelectric Telescope (APT) at Fairborn Observatory, which offers a proxy for the spot cycle of the star, as well as with chromospheric Ca II H&K activity derived from the observed spectra. Results. The magnetic field and surface brightness maps reveal similar patterns relative to previous DI and ZDI studies: non-axisymmetric polar magnetic field structure, void of fields at mid-latitudes, and a complex structure in the equatorial regions. There is a weak but clear tendency of the polar structures to be linked with a strong radial field and the equatorial ones with the azimuthal field. We find a polarity reversal in the radial field between 2016 and 2017 that is coincident with a spot minimum seen in the long-term photometry, although the precise relation of chromospheric activity to the spot activity remains complex and unclear. The inverted field strengths cannot be easily related with the observed spottedness, but we find that they are partially connected to the retrieved field complexity. Conclusions. This field topology and the dominance of the poloidal field component, when compared to global magnetoconvection models for rapidly rotating young suns, could be explained by a turbulent dynamo, where differential rotation does not play a major role (so-called 2 or 2 dynamos) and axi- and non-axisymmetric modes are excited simultaneously. The complex equatorial magnetic field structure could arise from the twisted (helical) wreaths often seen in these simulations, while the polar feature would be connected to the mostly poloidal non-axisymmetric component that has a smooth spatial structure

    Striving for Protection: Whistleblowers in Jordan

    Whistleblowers take it upon themselves to protect public goods and resources by blowing the whistle on corruption. Yet, they are at risk of facing retaliation from their employers, as well as of experiencing firing, unfair appraisal, and isolation at work. In this article, we investigate the extent of whistleblower protection in Jordan. We discuss whistleblowers’ significant role in reporting wrongdoings and fighting corruption, as well as the price that whistleblowers pay to protect the public interest. In this study, we used the protection analysis approach by identifying the potential risks to which whistleblowers are exposed. Specifically, we used official documents analysis. The results are based on the analysis of Jordanian laws and policies, regional and international conventions, the investigation of whistleblower cases in the media, transparency international reports, and the Jordan Transparency Center. The review of spoken whistleblower cases revealed that legal policies stipulate protection; still, whistleblowers in Jordan face retaliation. We recommend considering judicial review to close the loopholes and to include protection principles into the rules of organizations’ procedures to provide better guarantees for protecting whistleblowers in Jordan
