Burial Traditions of Toraja: Reflections of Megalithic Belief and Social Stratification

    Get PDF
This study explores the symbolic meanings of Toraja mortuary practices and their relationship to belief systems and social hierarchy. Drawing on ethnographic methods—participant observation of funeral ceremonies, semi-structured interviews, oral-tradition documentation, and archival research—the research examines burial forms at the Sillanan site in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi. The findings reveal that Toraja burials, including Liang Sillik, Liang Erong, Liang Tokek, Liang Pak, and Patane, along with coffin types (erong) shaped as rectangles, buffalo, or boats, reflect a megalithic belief system that emphasizes the powerful influence of ancestral spirits on human welfare. These practices also encode social stratification: lower social groups were interred in simpler caves, while high-ranking nobles used elaborately carved boat- or buffalo-shaped coffins placed in elevated locations. The mortuary system illustrates a worldview in which life and death form a continuous cycle, where the spirit world (puya) mirrors earthly society. For archaeology, the ethnographic data provide an important analog for interpreting material remains, offering insights into the ideological and social frameworks that inform the creation, use, and deposition of artifacts. This research highlights how Toraja burial technology and rituals embody enduring connections between the living and the dead, as well as between belief, social order, and material culture

Pemetaan Indeks Khusus Penanganan Stunting (IKPS) Indonesia menggunakan Metric Multidimensional Scaling (MMDS)

    Get PDF
This study aims to map the Special Handling Index for Stunting (Indeks Khusus Penanganan Stunting/IKPS) in Indonesia using Metric Multidimensional Scaling (MMDS) to identify spatial patterns and similarities in characteristics among provinces. The MMDS analysis produced a visualization that grouped 34 provinces into 10 clusters with similar IKPS characteristics and spatial proximity within each group. Additionally, three provinces were identified as outliers due to their significantly greater spatial distances from other provinces, these provinces are DI Yogyakarta, Gorontalo, and Papua. Model quality evaluation showed a STRESS value of 0.0248 and a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.9993, indicating an excellent fit in representing the spatial data, thus making the clustering model on the spatial map reliable for use. These findings provide a comprehensive overview of the distribution and characteristics of stunting handling in Indonesia. Therefore, the clustering results can serve as a strategic foundation for stakeholders and policymakers in designing strategies and implementing more focused and effective interventions to address and manage stunting across various regions in Indonesia

Potensi Menir sebagai Alternatif Sumber Bahan Baku pada Pengembangan Produk Makanan Berbasis Tepung Beras : Systematic Review

    Get PDF
Rice is a major agricultural commodity widely cultivated in Indonesia. During the rice milling process, three forms of rice are produced: whole rice (premium quality), broken rice, and menir (rice fragments). Based on field observations and literature reviews, menir remains underutilized due to its less appealing physical appearance. This review aims to identify the physicochemical properties of broken rice (menir) and explore its potential derivative products based on studies reported in relevant journals. The method used is a systematic review, gathering information from online article publications available on platforms such as Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Scopus. The results indicate that menir has significant potential for further processing, with characteristics similar to whole rice in terms of physical and nutritional properties. Menir contains 8.18% protein, 1.07% fat, 89.81% carbohydrates, 12.45% moisture, 0.94% ash, and 2.13% fiber. It can be processed into both intermediate and final (finished) products. Product development from menir includes wet and dry cakes, as well as functional analog rice, by combining it with ingredients rich in specific nutrients for fortification, thus offering functional food properties. In the future, menir can be further explored as a raw material for innovative product development in various research areas

    Get PDF
This study investigates the types and frequencies of linguistic errors found in descriptive texts written by tenth-grade students of SMKN 5 Palu. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method to analyze students’ written work using the error taxonomy proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982), which categorizes errors into omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Data were collected from 32 students who completed a writing task focused on descriptive text production. The findings reveal a total of 278 errors across all samples, with misformation errors being the most prevalent (36.69%), followed closely by omission errors (35.25%). Addition errors accounted for 15.47%, while misordering errors represented 12.59% of the total errors. These results indicate significant challenges among students in applying correct grammatical structures, vocabulary, and sentence organization when writing descriptive texts. The study underscores the need for more focused instruction in grammar, vocabulary development, and writing practice to help students improve their descriptive writing skills. Additionally, the findings suggest that error analysis can serve as an effective diagnostic tool for identifying students’ writing difficulties and guiding targeted pedagogical interventions. Overall, this research contributes valuable insights into the nature of writing errors in Indonesian EFL classrooms and highlights the importance of tailored instructional approaches to enhance students’ writing competence
