Analysis of Landslide Hazard Levels on the Palopo – Luwu Road using GIS and Finite Element Method
Indonesia is one of the countries that often experiences landslides during the rainy season. The Palopo–Luwu main road is a landslide-prone area in North Bastem sub-district because it has a topographic condition with a very steep slope. Therefore, it is important to conduct research on the analysis of the potential for landslides in the area. The method used in this study is Weighted Overlay based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in making landslide-prone maps. Data processing with weighting or scoring on parameters such as slope, rainfall, rock type, soil type, and land cover. While the Finite Element Method (FEM) is used to model slope stability with input data on physical and mechanical properties of rocks and slope geometry data as a basis for calculating the slope safety factor (FK). The results of the study showed that almost 85% of the research area is a high landslide potential area which is the Palopo–Luwu main road area, this was validated from laboratory test data which was then analyzed for slope stability showing FK value <1.25, which is 0.936 and the actual condition of the slope in the field has collapsed. The mapping results can be used as a useful tool for land use planning and risk reduction in the research area
Impact of El Niño - Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) on Air Temperature in Bengkulu City
Bengkulu City has experienced rising air temperatures due to climate variability events, particularly ENSO and IOD. This study analyzes the relationship between ENSO, IOD, and air temperature in Bengkulu over the past 20 years (2004-2023) using data from Meteorological and Climatology stations, as well as ONI and DMI indices from NOAA. Pearson and multiple correlation analyses show a temperature increase of 0.08-0.1°C per year. ENSO has a stronger influence than IOD, especially on maximum temperature ( r = 0.28-0.38). To strengthen the analysis, multiple linear regression was applied, revealing that ONI had a statistically significant positive effect on average air temperature, while DMI showed a weaker and insignificant influence ( r = 0.10-0.11). A phase-based composite analysis revealed that average temperatures peaked during El Niño combined with Positive IOD phases, highlighting their synergistic warming effect, with maximum temperature reaching 35.9°C (February 2019), and the lowest minimum temperature recorded at 18°C (September 2019). The temperature increase during El Niño poses risks such as prolonged dry seasons, increased drought, and disruption of coastal ecosystems. Therefore, adaptation measures such as early warning systems and water resource management must be integrated into regional planning, particularly in agriculture and health sectors in Bengkulu
Application of 2D Seismic Modeling in Gas Hydrate Reservoir Characterization
Gas hydrate reservoirs represent a significant unconventional energy resource with considerable potential for future energy supply and climate-related studies. However, their complex subsurface occurrence requires advanced geophysical methods for accurate detection and characterization. This study presents the application of two-dimensional (2D) seismic modeling to evaluate the seismic response of gas hydrate-bearing sediments and underlying free gas zones. The objective is to assess the reflection coefficients and amplitude variation with offset (AVO) to enhance the interpretation of subsurface features. The synthetic model is constructed using multichannel seismic data and velocity profiles derived from previous studies. Seismic wave propagation is simulated to observe the impedance contrasts across various subsurface layers. Results reveal that the Bottom Simulating Reflector (BSR), a key seismic indicator of gas hydrate presence, exhibits strong negative reflection amplitudes due to the presence of underlying free gas, which significantly reduces seismic velocity. Furthermore, AVO analysis shows that amplitude variations are highly sensitive to the acoustic impedance contrast at the hydrate-gas interface. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of seismic modeling in improving gas hydrate reservoir characterization and provide a foundation for more accurate exploration strategies. The study contributes to both energy development and environmental monitoring efforts involving gas hydrates
Exploring English Varieties Used by Indonesian Employees: A Linguistic Perspective
This research explores the common linguistic features found in the spoken English of Indonesian employees in corporate settings, focusing on grammatical, pronunciation, and vocabulary aspects. The primary objective of this research is to identify and analyze the errors made by Indonesian employees when using English in professional contexts. The research utilizes qualitative methods, involving interviews with employees from various corporate sectors, analyzing their spoken English for common linguistic patterns. The research finds that significant grammatical errors include the omission of plural noun markers (-s/-es), incorrect usage of auxiliary verbs, and the overuse of "to be" in present sentences. Pronunciation errors, such as mispronouncing the ‘v’ sound as ‘f’, and the tendency to apply Indonesian pronunciation patterns, were also prevalent. Additionally, vocabulary usage showed signs of direct translation from Indonesian, resulting in inappropriate word choices. The findings highlight the influence of native language structures on English proficiency, particularly in formal communication. This research emphasizes the need for tailored language training to address these specific challenges, including focused grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary exercises. It is suggested that such interventions would improve the clarity and effectiveness of English communication among Indonesian employees in the corporate environment. Future researches may further explore sociolinguistic factors and evaluate the efficacy of proposed language improvement programs
Integrating Digital Wordwall Media In EFL Learning to Improve Student’s Reading Comprehension
This aim of this study is to find whether the use of digital wordwall media can improve reading comprehension of the grade eight students of SMPN 19 PALU. This study used a quantitative approach, using a quasi-experimental design, this type of research design consists of two group namely experimental group and control group. The population of this study consists of all eighth-grade students at SMPN 19 Palu, totaling 110 students. The researcher employed random sampling, with a total sample of 54 student, 24 students from class D as the experimental group and 30 students from class A as the control group. Data collection in this study used tests in the form of pre-tests and post-tests. After analyzing the data, it was found that the average score of students in the experimental class increased from 47.87 in the pre-test to 69.04 in the post-test. In addition, the control class showed an increase in the average score from 46.86 to 55.36 within the same time frame. The results indicated that the t-test value (2.655) exceeded the critical t-value (1.675). The findings support the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis, indicating that the integration of digital wordwall media has a significant positive impact on students’ reading comprehension
The Plot and Characters in Building the Romance Formula in Movie Midnight Sun (2018) by Scott Peer
This study analyzes the romantic formula in Midnight Sun (2018) by analyzing the plot and characterization through the lens of John G. Cawelti\u27s romantic formula theory, supported by Radway\u27s theory. Using a qualitative research design and an objective literary criticism approach, this study identifies the key elements of the romantic formula, including the initial meeting between the protagonists, the development of their relationship, the introduction of conflict, and its resolution. The findings show that Midnight Sun successfully applies the classic structure of romantic narratives. The film follows Cawelti\u27s stages from the first meeting, the development of the relationship, emotional conflict, and ends with a bittersweet yet meaningful resolution. The characterization revealed by Radway reflects the romantic formula that provides emotional depth and satisfaction for the audience. The findings show that Midnight Sun follows the common romantic structure, where the relationship between the hero and heroine develops through emotional and situational obstacles before reaching a resolution. This study contributes to the broader discourse on romantic narratives in popular cinema, offering insights into the application of formulaic storytelling in contemporary films
Problems Faced by Grade XI Students in Speaking English at SMA Negeri 2 Sigi
This research aims to identify the problems faced by eleventh-grade students in speaking English. This research used a qualitative descriptive method, using questionnaires and interviews to collect data. The subject of this research was eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Sigi. There are 44 students as participants. The researcher found that students\u27 problems in speaking English are influenced by two factors: linguistic and psychological problems. Linguistic problems consist of a lack of vocabulary, poor grammar, a lack of pronunciation, and a lack of fluency. The dominant problem with a high percentage is fluency in speaking English. Other problems include linguistic problem in speaking, consisting of inhibition, nothing to say, a low number of participants, mother tongue use, and the dominant problem with a high percentage is mother tongue use. While psychological problems consist of fear of making mistakes, shyness, anxiety, lack of confidence, and lack of motivation, the dominant problems with a high percentage are fear of making mistakes and lack of confidence. This research provides insights into the problems faced by eleventh-grade students in speaking English. It emphasizes the need to address these issues in the classroom to enhance students\u27 learning experience
Exploring Students\u27 Perspective about Lectures\u27 teaching strategy to enhance Students\u27 WTC in EFL Classroom
This study explores the factors influencing students’ Willingness to Communicate (WTC) in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms and examines teaching strategies that can effectively foster this willingness. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research was conducted at an EFL Classroom in Indonesia, through classroom observations and in-depth interviews with selected EFL students. The study applies Macintyre et al.’s (1998) heuristic model of WTC as its theoretical foundation. The findings reveal that students’ WTC is shaped by a dynamic interaction of internal, social, and instructional factors. Internally, communicative self-confidence, anxiety levels, and motivation (both instrumental and integrative) played a significant role. Socially, peer support, classroom atmosphere, and fear of negative evaluation were identified as crucial influences. The flexible use of both Bahasa Indonesia and English also helped reduce anxiety and increase participation. Pedagogically, students responded more positively to interactive strategies compared to traditional lectures. Approaches such as cooperative learning, problem-based learning, and project-based learning were found to be the most effective in encouraging active communication, critical thinking, and collaboration. Overall, this research emphasizes that WTC is not fixed, but rather influenced by contextual and emotional readiness. Teachers are encouraged to implement student-centred and emotionally supportive strategies to create a classroom environment where learners feel confident to speak
Pemetaan Karbon Organik Tanah pada Beberapa Tutupan Lahan dan Kelas Lereng di Kecamatan Simbang Kabupaten Maros: Soil Organic Carbon Mapping in Several Land Cover and Slope Classes in Simbang District, Maros Regency
It is estimated that hundreds of millions of tonnes of carbon stored in soil have been lost due to human activities, primarily through soil cultivation practices and land cover changes. The organic C content in the soil varies, depending on the climate, soil type, mineralogy, land cover and management. The existence of the C-organic distribution map can be a reference in dealing with existing problems, especially in the agricultural sector regarding soil fertility in the region. This study aims to determine the level of soil organic carbon in several types of land cover and slope classes to map the spatial distribution of soil organic carbon in several land covers and slope classes in Simbang District, Maros Regency. Soil sampling was carried out using a drill at a depth of 0-15 cm, for each point a sample was taken. Soil analysis includes c-organic, soil texture, soil color, and bulk density. Making maps of the distribution of soil organic carbon using ArcGIS spatial analysis with interpolation techniques. The highest soil C-organic content was obtained in secondary forest land cover with slopes of 0-8% (flat) with a bulk density value of 1.05 g/cm3 and a color of 7.5YR 3/3 dark brown. The lowest C-organic content was obtained in scrub land cover with a slope of 8-15%, namely 1.21% with a bulk density value of 1.50 g/cm3 and a color of 5YR 4/4 reddish brown. In addition, the soil texture results also showed that the highest clay fraction content was found in secondary forest land covers and slopes of 0-8%. Land cover and slope gradient affect the C-organic content. The highest C-organic content was obtained in secondary forest land cover with a flat slope with an area of 249.92 ha. While the lowest C-organic content was obtained in shrub land cover with a gentle slope with an area of 59.75 ha. The distribution of soil organic carbon content in Simbang District is dominated by the moderate category
Perkembangan Stilistika di Indonesia: Ulasan Sejarah dan Tokoh
Abstrak
Stilistika adalah kajian tentang gaya bahasa. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk meninjau proses perkembangan gaya bahasa di Indonesia berdasarkan sejarah dan tokoh-tokoh di dalamnya, kemudian mendeskripsikan perspektif gaya bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian ini adalah studi deskriptif (al-manhaj al-washfi) yang menggambarkan fakta-fakta bahasa dan linguistik sebagaimana adanya. Pada dasarnya, penelitian kualitatif bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan fenomena secara rinci, non-numerik, deskriptif, dan menggunakan penalaran serta kata-kata untuk menjelaskan fenomena yang sedang diteliti, sehingga makalah ini akan mendeskripsikan berbagai teori, kemudian menganalisisnya. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa gaya bahasa di Indonesia memiliki sejarah dan perkembangan yang panjang. Perkembangannya ditandai oleh beberapa tokoh, baik dalam gaya bahasa Indonesia maupun dalam gaya bahasa Arab. Adapun gaya bahasa dalam konteks Indonesia, adalah ilmu tentang gaya bahasa yang didasarkan pada diksi, kalimat, struktur sintaksis, atau unit lain yang dapat merepresentasikan gaya bahasa. Tujuan gaya bahasa secara umum adalah untuk menemukan hubungan antara bahasa dan fungsi serta makna artistiknya. Hubungan antara sastra dan linguistik dengan gaya bahasa adalah saling melengkapi dalam proses penelitian atau studi. Gaya bahasa memerlukan sastra sebagai salah satu sumber penting dan memerlukan linguistik dalam aspek kajian bahasa secara fundamental sebelum mempertimbangkan nilai estetika dan maknanya.
