    Get PDF
This study examines the effectiveness of Structured Visual Mapping as a prewriting strategy to enhance the narrative writing quality of senior high school EFL learners in Indonesia. Many students face challenges in developing ideas, organizing narrative elements, and applying appropriate vocabulary and grammar when composing narrative texts. Using a quasi-experimental design, 60 eleventh-grade students from SMA Negeri 1 Marioriwawo were divided into an experimental group taught using Structured Visual Mapping and a control group taught through conventional instruction. Pretests and posttests were administered, and students’ writing performance was assessed using the ESL Composition Profile. The results show that the experimental group achieved significantly higher improvement across all five writing components, with a mean gain of 9.3 compared to 1.9 in the control group. The posttest t-test value (t = 2.024 > 2.000) confirmed that the intervention had a significant effect on students’ writing performance. These findings indicate that Structured Visual Mapping effectively supports students in generating ideas, sequencing narrative structure, and improving lexical and grammatical accuracy. This study recommends integrating Structured Visual Mapping into narrative writing instruction and suggests further exploration of its application in other writing genres or digital learning contexts

Supervisory Function in Controlling Single-Use Plastic Pollution in Makassar City

    Get PDF
This study analyzed the supervisory function of the Environmental Agency of Makassar City in controlling environmental pollution caused by single-use plastic waste. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research explored four key dimensions of supervision based on Terry’s control theory: standard setting, monitoring and evaluation, result comparison, and corrective actions. The findings showed that although the agency had a clear legal foundation through Mayor Regulation No. 21 of 2023 on the prohibition of plastic bags, operational standards and measurable performance indicators were not fully developed. Monitoring and evaluation were conducted only once a year, which limited the agency’s ability to capture variations in business compliance. The study also revealed that several business entities continued to violate the regulation, as evidenced by the issuance of warning letters. This indicated that the targets of plastic reduction had not been optimally achieved. Corrective actions remained limited to administrative warnings without structured follow-up mechanisms or tiered sanctions, which reduced their deterrent effect. Overall, the supervision function had been initiated but was not yet effective in ensuring consistent compliance and reducing single-use plastic waste. Strengthening operational standards, increasing monitoring frequency, improving data-based evaluation, and enforcing tiered sanctions were required to enhance environmental protection efforts in Makassar City

    Get PDF
This study examines multicultural communication politeness strategies in online interactions of WhatsApp Group boarding female students in Tamanan, Yogyakarta. This research uses the theory of politeness from Brown & Levinson and intercultural pragmatics from Kecskes. The method used in this research is qualitative. The object of this research is the chat in the WhatsApp Group in 2024-2025. The results show that, first, the dominant politeness strategy is negative politeness with a percentage of 42.86%, positive politeness with a percentage of 31.43%, off record with a percentage of 14.29%, and bald-on record with a percentage of 11.43%. The findings show that speakers always package reprimands, requests, and orders with politeness substrategies such as apologies, the use of the word please, solidarity markers, indirectness, giving reasons, and innuendo. Second, the power factor lies with the boarding owner, so the boarders must be more polite. The distance between the owner and boarders is close, while the distance between boarders is quite close; it is influenced by direct interaction, social status, and gender. Ranking of imposition is always played with greetings, apologies/help, core speech, and reasons. Third, CCG is diverse but still prioritises politeness, thus creating an ECG that regulates new habits. Different egocentrism, but the same style of polite speech, so that it can be accepted together (cooperation). Then, hybrid norms that are inclusive strengthen solidarity and cooperation. Despite coming from different cultural backgrounds, the speakers still prioritise Indonesian society\u27s general politeness, which is indirect, collective, and accommodating to Javanese culture

Audio versus Multimodal Input: A Case Study of Speech Perception among Learners in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Context

    Get PDF
This study investigates how audio-only and multimodal (audio plus visual) techniques affect speech perception among Indonesian EFL learners. Using a quasi-experimental design, 60 third-semester English literature students were divided into two groups that received either an audio recording or an audio-visual video of the same narrative, “The Little Red Hen,” followed by a 20-item speech perception test and questionnaires on emotional engagement and learning satisfaction. Results show that the multimodal group achieved significantly higher comprehension scores than the audio-only group, with a large effect size indicating a substantial advantage of visual cues such as facial expressions and gestures in supporting listening. Correlation analyses also revealed significant positive relationships between emotional engagement, learning satisfaction, and speech perception in both conditions, with stronger coefficients for the multimodal group. These findings suggest that multimodal input not only improves comprehension by reducing cognitive load and enriching contextual information but also enhances affective factors that are crucial for successful language learning. The study recommends that EFL educators incorporate multimodal materials to optimize listening instruction and calls for further research on the long-term impact of different visual cue types in varied learning contexts

Focalization Of Bullying In The Film Alrawaby School For Girls Season 2 By Tima Shomali (A Narratological Study Based On Gerard Genette)

    Get PDF
This study aims to analyze the focalization techniques applied in Tima Shomali\u27s film AlRawaby School For Girls Season 2, with reference to the narratological theoretical framework developed by Gérard Genette. The main focus of the study lies on three types of focalization: zero focalization, internal focalization, and external focalization with types of bullying, namely physical, verbal, social, and cyberbullying. Using a qualitative-descriptive method, this study identifies and analyzes how the three types of focalization are used to convey the narrative, shape the audience\u27s perception, and construct social meaning in the storyline. The results show that the film is dominated by internal focus centered on the characters who are victims of bullying, thus presenting a subjective and empathetic narrative. In addition, there is also a shift to external focalization in several scenes that show the objective reality of bullying as a social phenomenon. In other words, the film AlRawaby School For Girls Season 2 not only depicts the personal experiences of the victims, but also highlights the structural and systemic aspects of bullying in a broader social context

Status dan Ketersediaan Unsur Hara Mikro Seng (Zn) pada Lahan Sawah Berdasarkan Indeks Pertanaman: Status and Availability of Micronutrient Zinc (Zn) in Rice Fields based on Cropping Index

    Get PDF
Zn is one of the essential micronutrients for rice plants. Increasing the Cropping Index (CI) to enhanced rice productivity, leads to increased Zn absorption. Without proper micronutrient fertilization, the soil can potentially be deficient in Zn. This study aims to study the differences in the status and availability of Zn micronutrients in paddy fields based on the Rice Cropping Index. The research was conducted in Tanete village, Simbang sub-district, Maros. Sample points were determined using purposive sampling method. There were eight sample points, namely two points each in CI300 rice fields with 10 years of application, CI300 with more than 10 years, CI200 with less than 30 years, and CI200 with more than 30 years of application. The parameters observed were texture, pH, C-organic, Zn-total, and Zn-available. Correlation analysis was conducted to see the relationship between soil properties. Zn availability ranged from 0.05 - 2.47 ppm. The availability of Zn in CI300 and CI200 rice fields is lower in those with a longer age of use. This is related to the length and intensity of land use, where more Zn nutrients are mined, resulting in reduced Zn availability in the soil. Available Zn increases with the increase of soil C-Organic and Zn-total. Zn availability is classified as low to high. Zn availability in CI300 rice fields with <10 years of use is higher than with >10 years of use. The availability of Zn in CI200 rice fields with <30 years of use is higher than that of >30 years of use. Zn availability has a strong positive correlation with Zn-total and soil C-Organic, and a moderate correlation with soil pH

Literature Review: Analysis of Coastal Vulnerability and Comprehensive Adaptation Strategies in Padang City, West Sumatra

    Get PDF
Coastal areas in Indonesia, including Padang City, face increasing vulnerability due to a combination of natural processes and human activities. This literature review synthesizes findings from various studies to assess the dimensions of coastal vulnerability and adaptation strategies, with a focus on Padang City, West Sumatra. The review reveals that major issues include abrasion, seawater intrusion, tidal flooding, ecosystem degradation, and limited adaptive capacity of coastal communities. Physical vulnerability is influenced by factors such as building density, land subsidence, ecosystem degradation, and inadequate adaptive infrastructure, while socio-economic and institutional challenges include weak governance, limited funding, and low community participation. Studies in different regions demonstrate that effective adaptation requires a combination of physical engineering, ecosystem-based approaches, socio-economic diversification, and institutional integration. For Padang City, the high exposure to coastal hazards, coupled with dependence on marine-based livelihoods, underscores the urgency of comprehensive adaptation strategies. These strategies should be proactive, data-driven, and involve cross-sector collaboration, integrating coastal vulnerability assessments into urban planning, policy frameworks, and community capacity-building efforts. Without such integrated approaches, Padang faces escalating risks to its environmental sustainability, socio-economic resilience, and long-term development.
