Ecological Disaster in Northern Sumatra: How Extreme Rainfall and Land-Cover Disturbance Triggered Widespread Flash Flooding

    Get PDF
In November 2025, Northern Sumatra experienced one of the most extreme flood disasters in recent history, triggered by a rare combination of sustained high-intensity rainfall and long-term land-cover disturbance. Using satellite-based rainfall estimates, historical rainfall records, and land-cover change analysis, this study examines the spatial and temporal dynamics of the event. The rainfall produced over 950 mm within four days, with daily accumulation exceeding 390 mm and hourly peaks surpassing 40 mm/hr. Statistical analysis using the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution estimated a return period of approximately 192 years for the daily maximum. Land-cover analysis revealed extensive deforestation between 1990 and 2024, including in designated protection and conservation forest zones. Flood impacts were concentrated in watersheds with high forest loss and recent land disturbance, particularly in Aceh and North Sumatra. This study highlights how compounding hydroclimatic extremes and upstream land degradation can significantly amplify flood risk. The findings underscore the importance of integrating forest conservation and multi-day rainfall indicators into regional flood risk assessments and early warning systems

Urban congestion and transport inefficiencies: Implications for livability in Dhaka City

    Get PDF
Urban livability refers to the degree to which urban environments foster long-term well-being and satisfaction among residents through adequate environmental quality, safety, accessibility, and sufficient social infrastructure, including housing, healthcare, education, green spaces, and transportation. This study assesses the impact of urban congestion and transport inefficiencies on livability in Dhaka City. It specifically explores indicators for measuring urban livability, analyzes the interrelationship between livability and transportation systems, and identifies associated challenges. Employing a qualitative approach, the research relies on secondary data from books, peer-reviewed journal articles, official reports, and reputable news portals. The findings indicate that urban congestion and transport inefficiencies significantly undermine livability in Dhaka. Rapid population growth exacerbates issues such as inadequate public transportation, missing essential infrastructure, and safety concerns. These problems cause substantial economic losses, impair public health through pollution and stress, and stem from overlapping institutional responsibilities and poor planning of housing and roadways. The study proposes targeted recommendations to address these challenges and enhance residents\u27 quality of life in Dhaka City

    Get PDF
The rise of digital technology today brings not only technical advancements but also significant social transformation across various sectors. This study aims to explore how communication innovation and the use of digital tools can support a more inclusive and sustainable development process. Applying a descriptive qualitative method and literature-based approach, this research focuses on three key sectors: health, education, and governance. The findings reveal that digital health services, particularly through mHealth applications, have improved access to basic healthcare, although challenges remain in infrastructure and digital literacy. In the education sector, online learning platforms have provided more flexible learning spaces, yet have not fully reached underserved areas. Meanwhile, the implementation of e-governance has created new opportunities to enhance transparency and citizen engagement, though further policy support and public trust are still needed. Overall, this study highlights that digital transformation can only foster meaningful social change if supported by human resource readiness, cross-sector collaboration, and policies that prioritize equitable access. The study recommends a digital strategy that emphasizes sustainability, participation, and partnership among stakeholders to ensure the benefits of technology are shared more fairly

The family hope program and poverty alleviation: A social construction perspective from North Lemito Village, Pohuwato Regency

    Get PDF
Poverty is increasingly understood as a multidimensional phenomenon that involves limited access to education, healthcare, and social welfare rather than merely low income. In Indonesia, the Family Hope Program (Program Keluarga Harapan/PKH), a conditional cash transfer initiative, has been implemented to alleviate poverty while promoting human capital development. However, beyond its economic contribution, the way beneficiaries interpret and socially construct the program remains insufficiently explored. This study aims to analyze how PKH is socially constructed as a poverty alleviation instrument at the community level. This research employed a qualitative case study approach conducted in North Lemito Village, Pohuwato Regency, Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving PKH beneficiaries, facilitators, and community representatives. The data were analyzed using an interactive qualitative analysis model to identify patterns of meaning, perceptions, and experiences related to the program’s implementation. The findings show that PKH is socially constructed as an important support mechanism that improves access to education, healthcare services, and basic household welfare. Beneficiaries perceive the program as reducing financial pressure, encouraging children’s school participation, promoting preventive health behavior, and stabilizing daily living conditions. Nevertheless, PKH is generally viewed as complementary support rather than a comprehensive solution to poverty, as structural economic constraints and rising living costs continue to shape household vulnerability. These findings suggest that strengthening PKH requires not only financial assistance but also integration with broader empowerment initiatives to support sustainable poverty reduction

Collaboration as Method: Field Lessons from South Sulawesi, Indonesia and Khon Kaen, Thailand

    Get PDF
Collaboration in the context of international fieldwork serves to elevate the skills of all members involved while simultaneously contributing to a robust body of observations. This paper reflects on methodological lessons from a Collaborative Southeast Asia Summer Field School where graduate and undergraduate students from Universitas Hasanuddin, Sulawesi, Indonesia (UNHAS), Khon Kaen University, Thailand (KKU), and University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, USA (UHM) came together to learn how to conduct research collaboratively. Guided by mentors from these three institutions, our multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural group participated in collaborative field schools at three field sites - two in South Sulawesi; and one in Khon Kaen, Thailand - where we continued, and built upon our local partners’ existing research projects and priorities in these areas. Each group focused on ‘following’ specific crops and commodities in different contexts, adopted and adapted multiple research methods, engaged with diverse team members and communities across various languages and landscapes, was guided by different fieldwork objectives and overarching questions, and yielded distinct findings. Despite these differences, all three groups shared a general aim to understand socio-economic and environmental transitions in Southeast Asian rural societies. Through collaborative and comparative reflections on challenges and adaptations before, during, and after fieldwork in both sites, this paper discusses how using collaboration as a research method has (re)shaped team members’ understandings of our research, Southeast Asia as a region, and ourselves. Importantly, we reflect on how this experience has shaped our future collaborative research in, and of Southeast Asia, and how we might apply these methodological lessons in our own research projects
