    Get PDF
This study aimed to identify the types of soft corals of the family Alcyoniidae based on their morphological characteristics and spicule shape; determine the composition of the type and vertical distribution of soft corals; and  analyze the relationship between the distribution of soft corals of the Alcyoniidae family in the fore reef  zone with environmental factors in the waters of Barranglompo Island. This research was conducted in the coral reef area on the edge of Barranglompo Island which is divided into four observation stations. Data on species and the number of soft coral colonies were collected using the 100-meter belt transect method, which was placed parallel to the shoreline at two depths. This study identified 23 soft coral species belonging to three genera: Sinularia, Lobophytum, and Sarcophyton. Five spicule models were found: clubs, capstan, shuttel, spindle, and barrel, and the dominant one was the shape of clubs. There was no significant difference in the number of types between the research stations in the upper and lower reef zones. The density of soft corals differed markedly between stations in the lower fore reef zone, with the highest density of 0.19 ind/m2 at the southern station of the island. The high density of soft corals was located in the southwest of the island in the upper and lower fore-reef  zones andwass associated with high light intensity and salinity. The high richness of soft coral types is located in the southeast of the island in the upper and lower fore-reef zones, which are characterized by turbidity values and high temperatures

An Analysis Of Metaphors Found In Aku Ini Binatang Jalang By Chairil Anwar

    Get PDF
This research aims to analyze the types and meanings of metaphors found in selected poems by Chairil Anwar based on Goatly’s theory of metaphor. The objectives of this study are to identify the kinds of metaphors used and to interpret their meanings in each poem. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected from ten selected poems, namely Aku, Sajak Putih, Diponegoro, Penghidupan, Suara Malam, Catetan Tahun 1945, Aku Berada Kembali, Cintaku Jauh di Pulau, Senja di Pelabuhan Kecil, and Derai-derai Cemara. The data were analyzed by classifying the metaphors into active metaphor, subjective metaphor, asymmetric metaphor, dead metaphor, and mimetic metaphor according to Goatly’s framework. The findings show that Chairil Anwar dominantly uses active metaphors to express strong emotions, rebellion, struggle, and existential awareness. Subjective metaphors are frequently used to convey personal feelings and psychological conditions. Asymmetric metaphors reflect power relations, conflict, and life struggles, while dead metaphors indicate expressions that have become conventional in meaning. Mimetic metaphors are used to create imaginative and dramatic imagery in the poems. The analysis reveals that metaphors play an important role in strengthening meaning, emotional intensity, and poetic expression in Chairil Anwar’s works. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of metaphor analysis in literary studies, especially in Indonesian poetry. It is expected that this research can enrich readers’ comprehension of figurative language and provide references for future researchers who are interested in metaphor studies using Goatly’s theory

Metafora dalam Puisi Ogura Hyakunin Isshu Karya Rokkasen

    Get PDF
This study is concerned with the use of metaphorical language in the poems of the Rokkasen in Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, with a focus on identifying image-based classifications and conceptual meanings. Metaphor is understood as a cognitive mechanism that connects two domains sharing similar characteristics, thereby creating meanings that extend beyond literal expression. A descriptive qualitative approach is employed in this study. In this research, selected poems by the Rokkasen are analyzed. The data were collected through the Uninvolved Conversation Observation technique supported by systematic note-taking. The analysis applies the Referential Identity Method, and the findings are presented using both formal and informal descriptive techniques. The theoretical framework draws on Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory to explain metaphorical meaning and Ullman’s Image Classification Theory to categorize metaphorical imagery. The results reveal three main types of metaphorical imagery—Anthropomorphic Character, Abstract-to-Concrete Image, and Animal Character—as well as two types of conceptual metaphor: Structural and Ontological. These metaphors reflect central themes commonly found in classical Japanese poetry, particularly love, life, and religion

A Review On The Implementation Of Picture Series In Teaching Writing Skills

    Get PDF
This library research reviews recent studies on the use of picture series to improve students’ writing skills in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. Writing is often difficult for students because they have trouble finding ideas, organizing sentences, and using correct grammar. Many teachers and researchers have tried different ways to help students write better. One popular technique is using picture series as visual aids. This study collected data from five recent articles published between 2019 and 2024. The reviewed studies used different methods, including experimental research, classroom action research, and qualitative reviews. All studies reported positive results. Students who learned writing through picture series were more motivated, could organize their ideas better, and wrote more creatively. Even students with low English skills improved when teachers used pictures to support their writing. However, some teachers reported challenges, such as preparing good picture materials and managing large classes during picture-based activities. Despite these challenges, the findings strongly suggest that picture series are an effective and engaging tool for teaching writing. They help students become more confident and reduce the fear of writing in English. This research recommends that teachers use picture series more often, especially in EFL contexts, and that future studies explore digital picture tools to make this technique even more practical in modern classrooms

Gaza Theory: Writing from Beneath the Rubble

    Get PDF
In a global context where suffering is often reduced to fleeting headlines and the voice of the oppressed is increasingly marginalized, Gaza Theory: Writing from Beneath the Rubble emerges as a contemporary literary and critical framework for reading texts produced under siege, occupation, and destruction. While rooted in the Palestinian experience, the theory transcends geography, proposing a universal lens through which literature written from within human catastrophe can be interpreted. Gaza, in this theory, is not merely a location—it is a symbolic and existential condition. The theory introduces key concepts such as "emergency language," "the besieged self," and "explosive realism," redefining aesthetics not as ornamentation, but as the act of persisting in language amid collapse. It affirms that resistance literature is not propaganda but a profound human and artistic expression of survival, identity, and dignity. The theory also deliberately avoids rigid methodologies, leaving space for interpretive multiplicity and encouraging readers and scholars to engage literature from within lived experience and ethical responsibility

Socioeconomic Determinants of Climate Change Adaptation in Rice Farming: Evidence from OPLAH Areas in West Kalimantan

    Get PDF
This study explores how socioeconomic characteristics shape climate change adaptation strategies among rice farmers cultivating OPLAH land in West Kalimantan using a quantitative explanatory survey of 95 households analyzed through descriptive statistics and cross-tabulations. Results indicate that farmers are predominantly of productive age, have primary to secondary education, extensive farming experience, moderate dependency ratios, and middle-level incomes—conditions that generally support adaptive capacity. The most widely implemented adaptation strategies incorporate flood-tolerant rice varieties, context-specific cultivation practices for flood-drought conditions, and fertilizer management aligned with recommended guidelines, while adoption of improved water management systems remains limited. Cross-tabulations indicate that higher education, longer farming experience, greater family labor, and higher incomes are consistently associated with greater implementation of climate adaptation technologies, while older, less educated, and poorer farmers lag behind. The coexistence of relatively high adoption rates of varietal and agronomic adaptations alongside low adoption of water management practices suggests that capital intensity, collective action requirements, and institutional support are critical barriers. Policies should prioritize integrated interventions that simultaneously strengthen tertiary irrigation and drainage on farmland within the OPLAH scheme, target extension and subsidies for flood-resistant varieties and climate-smart agronomy to vulnerable groups, and encourage farmer organizations to reduce coordination and investment constraints in swamp-based rice systems.

Symbolic Ratification and Cultural Resistance: South Korea’s Dilemma in Implementing CEDAW (Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women)

    Get PDF
This article aims to examine the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in South Korea, with particular attention to the influence of the country’s patriarchal cultural structure. It focuses on analyzing how and why patriarchal norms influence the implementation of CEDAW in South Korea. This article employs Cultural Theory as the analytical framework to explore how cultural values can affect the enforcement of global norms. It argues that the embedded norms and values within a state, in this case, South Korea, significantly hinder the effective implementation of international norms. Although South Korea has formally committed to implementing CEDAW and promoting women\u27s rights and gender equality, the realization of these goals remains challenging due to the deeply entrenched patriarchal culture, which often marginalizes women’s roles in society. This article finds that the implementation of CEDAW is obstructed by the South Korean government’s reluctance to trigger domestic instability by imposing global norms that contradict prevailing cultural values. At the same time, the government faces international pressure to maintain its image as a committed actor for gender equality on the global stage
