Dynamic thermo-ecological cost assessment and performance analyses of a multi generation system
he main objectives of this study are to perform a dynamic thermo-ecological cost (TEC) assessment and performance analyses of a multi generation system using the TRNSYS 18 software package for comparison purposes. The system has five outputs consisting of electricity, clean water, heating, hydrogen, and cooling. Multigeneration is made of an internal combustion engine fueled by natural gas, a heat pump, a reverse osmosis desalination plant and a magnesium-chlorine (Mg-Cl) thermochemical (TC) water splitting cycle. This cycle, which appears to be a promising TC hydrogen production method, is integrated to the multi generation system for producing hydrogen for waste heat recovery. Environmental effect of the system is also considered using the TEC method. In this contribution, a new index, namely the TEC of the irreversibility, is presented and applied. Variation of emissions, electricity, exergy destruction and energy loss values for the considered system and Mg-Cl TC water splitting cycle as well as TECs of the electricity, heat and the hydrogen are calculated through some parametric studies undertaken and presented in figures. It is determined that the multigeneration system has an energy efficiency value of 0.43 and a corresponding exergy efficiency of 0.38. As a result, TECEL, TECHEAT and TECH2 values of the considered system are obtained to be 2.98, 0.72 and 2.90, respectively. It may be concluded that the TEC is an effective method to assess the environmental performance of various energy systems and compare them with each other
Self-presentation strategies and the visual framing of political leaders on Instagram: evidence from the eventful 2019 Istanbul mayoral elections
This study aims to explore how political leaders used Instagram to execute self-presentation strategies in mayoral elections, including the dominant use of personalized tactics. The article reports findings of a visual framing analysis of 2,776 images featuring 2019 Istanbul mayoral election candidates Ekrem İmamoğlu (the Republican People’s Party, CHP) and Binali Yıldırım (the Justice and Development Party, AKP). The case is unusual because the initial election, which had resulted in İmamoğlu’s victory, was cancelled and a re-run was subsequently held. After many events, İmamoğlu succeeded again, becoming the first opposition politician to take control of Istanbul from the ruling AKP. In this study, we adapt Grabe and Bucy’s (2009) quantitative visual framing analysis to examine Instagram posts, from candidacy announcements until the election re-run. The results show that both candidates used the Ideal Candidate frame, with occasional increases in the frequency of the application of the Populist Campaigner frame. Self-frames in different time periods during this election are discussed, as well the frames that voters engaged with most frequently
Study addiction and 'dark' personality traits: a cross-sectional survey study among emerging adults
Background: Research has shown that personality traits can have an important role in the development and maintenance of behavioral addictions. However, the relationship between dark personality traits (i.e., Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism, sadism, spitefulness) and 'study addiction' has yet to be investigated. Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to examine the associations of dark traits with study addiction among the total sample, males, and females separately, while adjusting for the Big Five personality traits (i.e., extroversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness). Methods: A total of 716 university students completed an online survey, including questions assessing the aforementioned variables. Results: Hierarchical regression analysis suggested that being female, neuroticism, conscientiousness, Machiavellianism, and sadism were positively associated with study addiction. However, dark personality traits (i.e., Machiavellianism, sadism) were significantly related to study addiction only in males but not in females. Conclusions: Findings of this preliminary study suggest that dark personality traits may be better at explaining male addictive studying patterns and that gender should be taken into account when investigating the role of personality in the development of study addiction
Gendering the history of cinemagoing in Izmir, Turkey: Middle-class women’s experiences of cinema in the 1960s and 1970s
This article focuses on cinemagoing in Izmir (the third largest city in Turkey) in the 1960s and the 1970s, when the city developed a vibrant cinema culture with its numerous winter and summer cinemas. It attempts to undo the problematic conceptions of homogeneous audiences and cinemagoing experiences by focusing on how gender shaped and constructed the experiences of middle-class audiences. The primary source material for the article is qualitative data obtained from 62 oral history interviews, in addition to the contents of local newspapers and film industry magazines. The article argues that although, for women, cinemagoing was a very meaningful event in itself, it was not a wholly free and easily pleasurable activity. It also suggests that women, like men, went to the cinema to see a variety of films more than they went to socialize, and their choice of films was not limited to supposedly women's genres. Overall, the article attempts to break with the nostalgic tone in popular and academic discussions of cinemagoing in Izmir and other cities in Turkey. It shows that cinema in Izmir, and possibly elsewhere in Turkey, was not just a forum of collective entertainment and pleasure, but also a locus of struggle
Decomposing the earnings-to-price ratio and the cross-section of international equity-index returns
We examine whether components of the earnings-to-price (EP) ratio can be used to extract incremental information to better estimate future returns in the cross-section of country-industry indexes. We demonstrate that the EP components, such as lagged EP, changes in earnings, short-term momentum and long-term reversal in prices increase the accuracy of return forecasts. The EP decomposition matters in developed markets but is pointless in emerging countries. The results are robust to modifications in the methodology, sub-period analyses, the use of an alternative sample and remain unchanged after controlling for net share issuance, size, and fixed country and time effects
Weighted instances handler wrapper and rotation forest-based hybrid algorithms for sediment transport modeling
Sediment transport modeling has been known as an essential issue and challenging task in water resources and environmental engineering. In order to minimize the adverse impacts of the continues sediment deposition that is known as a main source of pollution in the urban area, the self-cleansing method is widely utilized for designing the sewer pipes to create a condition to keep the bottom of channel clean from sedimentation. In the present study, an extensive data range is utilized for modeling the sediment transport in non-deposition with clean bed condition. Regarding the effective parameters involved, four different scenarios are considered for the modeling. To this end, four standalone methods including the M5P, reduced error pruning tree (REPT), random forest (RF) and random tree (RT) and two hybrid models based on rotation forest (ROF) and weighted instances handler wrapper (WIHW) techniques are developed and result compared with three empirical equations. Based on the results, the hybrid WIHW-RT and WIHW-RF models provide better performance in particle Froude number estimation in comparison to other standalone and hybrid models. Performances of the most of the models are found accurate except RT and REPT standalone models. The outcomes revealed that the empirical models have considerable overestimation. Generally, hybrid data mining methods yield more precise estimations of sediment transport in contrast to the regression equations and standalone models. Particularly, both WIHW-RT and WIHWRF models provide almost the same performances however, as WIHW-RT can better capture the extreme particle Froude number values, it slightly outperforms WIHW-RF. Promising findings of the current study may encourage the implementation of the recommended approaches in alternative hydrological problems
Family businesses in the tourism industry: a research agenda
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to construct a comprehensive review on family businesses in the tourism industry since glocalization and small businesses comprise most of the industry. Design/methodology/approach: This is a conceptual paper which utilizes qualitative research methods. Bibliometric analysis is applied to the selected 35 articles from specific databases which include not only the general tourism industry but also subsectors of airline, hospitality, restaurant, etc. Articles in this study fixate on the family businesses within the tourism industry. Findings: In total, 35 articles are found with the keywords “family business and tourism”, “family business and hospitality and hotels”, “family business and restaurant” and “family business and airline”. Though the family business studies focus on hospitality, tourism and restaurants as F&B, there is a research gap in the subsectors like rent-a-car companies, travel agencies and tour operators and recreation facilities. Overall qualitative research design is preferred, but majority of the authors’ focus is on business development, profit, performance and succession. For further studies, quantitative analysis on research gap areas are recommended. Research limitations/implications: The most general limitation is that only specific selected databases are used for the data gathering process such as double reviewed indexed journals published within Web of Science, Emerald, Elton B. Stephens Company (EBSCO) and Elsevier databases from the period of 1970s. Some other databases and some different periods may be considered as well as different keywords for other research. Secondly, few studies have analyzed quantitative data, since the specific nature of the family business dynamics require qualitative data. As a suggestion, not only qualitative analysis but also mixed methods may also be studied since the literature lacks the studies conducted with these methodologies. Originality/value: The study contributes to the existing literature by providing a comprehensive review on hospitality and tourism family business management emphasizing the research gap on subsector application areas
Reducing Food Waste Through Lean And Sustainable Operations: A Case Study From The Poultry Industry
The growing need for solving the problem of food waste for tackling the survival of the planet and humankind is encouraging researchers to seek sustainable operations that alter the conventional methods that are currently in use in the food industry. Lean thinking has been used in this study to propose sustainable operations that incorporate social, economic, and environmental aspects and to handle the multidisciplinary and complex nature of reducing food waste. The value stream mapping methodology has been employed to explain food waste and generate drivers and to observe the end-to-end system flow. Since most of the waste is observed in upstream operations in emerging economies, one of the biggest meat-processing companies in Turkey is studied for illustrating the proposed methodology. As a result of the model, lean and sustainable food operations are suggested considering social, economic and environmental aspects
