Education Equity: An Evaluation of Present Conditions: Will the US Be Able to Be an Educational Leader?
COVID-19 resulted in school closures on a global scale. However, the most significant closures appear to be in North America. Educational disruption is anticipated to impact educational attainment in terms of drop-out rates but more significantly with respect to exacerbating pre-pandemic educational inequity and corresponding poverty. This discussion evaluates the impact of COVID-19 on the United States through a case-study review of Sri Lanka, Turkey, and Latvia. The case studies highlight that poor and marginalized populations irrespective of geography are vulnerable to economic shocks. Further, COVID-19 has prompted greater transparency of the inequities faced by marginalized groups and by doing so, increased the visibility of the need for intervention. Through an evaluation of literacy, the discussion addresses the impact of normalized US racism on educational equity and economic growth and highlights how a legacy of race-based policies may impact the resiliency of the United States specific to the present pandemic
Illegitimate tasks and occupational outcomes: the impact of vertical collectivism
Purpose: This study aims to understand essential work and occupational consequences of employees’ illegitimate task (ILT) experiences (unreasonable and unnecessary task demands) under the influence of vertical collectivist (VC) values. Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected via a survey from 503 teachers in the Turkish public education sector. The hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. Findings: Findings of this study reveal that unnecessary tasks decrease employees’ professional identification and perceived occupational prestige, whereas unreasonable tasks weaken their workplace well-being. Results also show that employees with higher VC orientation feel these adverse effects to a lesser extent. Research limitations/implications: This study demonstrates that individual-level cultural values play a significant role in understanding task-related dynamics and consequences at the workplace. It brings new theoretical insights to job design and work stress literature regarding what similar factors can mitigate task pressures on employees. Practical implications: A key practical insight from the findings is that human resources management experts should create a positive task environment where ILT demands are not welcome by analyzing jobs and skill requirements in detail, communicating task decisions regularly with employees and providing them with the necessary work support. Social implications: Understanding the impact of ILT can greatly help to assess the quality of the education system and the value of teaching occupation in society. Originality/value: ILT have been mainly discussed without considering the effect of different cultural orientations. This is the first study empirically showing the diverse effects of two ILT dimensions on essential occupational outcomes in connection to individual-level cultural influences
Cloud Computing: A Systematic Literature Review and Future Agenda
Global competition has extended the scope of trade and extended the supply chains causing information management to be an essential part of business. Many new technologies have recently been adapted by organizations in the era of digitalization. Cloud computing has an important place in these technologies and has been integrated widely. In recent days, unexpected and risky periods such as the global pandemic increased the interest towards cloud computing both academically and practically. The purpose of this study is to analyze and classify the contributions of the studies published in the cloud computing field. The cloud literature is analyzed systematically from the management and business points of view. The review is limited to journal articles and papers published between 2014 and 2019. This research summarizes the current research attempts, discovers the research gaps, and provides a research agenda for future research on cloud computing within the context of information management in business and management from a global perspective
Learning to move an object by the humanoid robots by using deep reinforcement learning
This paper proposes an algorithm for learning to move the desired object by humanoid robots. In this algorithm, the semantic segmentation algorithm and Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithms are combined. The semantic segmentation algorithm is used to detect and recognize the object be moved. DRL algorithms are used at the walking and grasping steps. Deep Q Network (DQN) is used to walk towards the target object by means of the previously defined actions at the gate manager and the different head positions of the robot. Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) network is used for grasping by means of the continuous actions. The previously defined commands are finally assigned for the robot to stand up, turn left side and move forward together with the object. In the experimental setup, the Robotis-Op3 humanoid robot is used. The obtained results show that the proposed algorithm has successfully worked

Analysing workforce development challenges in the Industry 4.0
Purpose: The aim of this paper is to identify and analyse workforce development challenges in the digital age by first, presenting these challenges and relationship between them, and then proposing a structural model that categorizes these challenges and proposes suggestions for managers to improve human resources practices and firm performance. Design/methodology/approach: Fuzzy total interpretive structural modelling (TISM) is used as the methodology, which gives an interpretive structural model by presenting direct and transitive relationship between workforce development challenges and categorizes them under autonomous, dependent, independent and linkage groups. Findings: In total, 13 different workforce development challenges are presented in this study. Results showed that lack of IT/digital skills has a critical role in workforce development in terms of affecting other challenges. Dependent group includes requirements for longer learning time and specialized training, lack of analytical thinking and dealing with complexity, and lack of interdisciplinary thinking and acting. On the other hand, lack of ability in decentralized decision-making and shortage of workforce with adequate skillset within the labour market have more macro-impacts on others. Most of the challenges located in the linkage group, which means that most of the challenges are interrelated with each other. Originality/value: Originality of this paper is presenting a systematic structure for workforce development in Industry 4.0 that considers challenges systematically
Exergy analyses of a tunnel furnace and a tunnel dryer
The main objective of this study is to comprehensively perform exergy analysis of the tunnel furnace and the tunnel dryer, which was selected as the control volume and involved in a brick production line. The analysis was based on the real data measured over a one-year period at a working brick factory with a daily production capacity of 392 tons of fired bricks. Energy and exergy efficiencies of the control volume were obtained to be 76.46% and 12.90% for dead state values of 25°C and 1.013 atm, respectively
A Holistic Approach And A Systematic Model Suggestion For Street Economy
All sectors have been affected economically due to the COVID-19 epidemic that we have experienced since the beginning of 2020. As a natural reflection of this, we know that unemployment is rising. The street economy is both a shelter for the workforce pushed from other sectors and for the existing workers. However, we do not know much about the current situation and problems of this industry all over the world. Of course, the investment required to determine with full accuracy the components of the street economy (how many people, where they work, and what are the characteristics of these people), which have a very dynamic structure, are usually based on social needs, is very large. However, by photographing the street economy on a regional basis, today the need to regulate this sector, which has more impact on the mental and physical health of both the individual and society than ever before, is strongly manifested. In this study, a systematic layout proposal was tried to be proposed for this arrangement
