    Analysis of CO 2 emissions and energy consumption by sources in MENA countries: evidence from quantile regressions

    The development of economies and energy usage can significantly impact the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the factors that determine CO2 emissions in MENA under the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) framework by applying novel quantile techniques on data for CO2 emissions, real income, renewable and non-renewable energy consumption, and urbanization over the period from 1990 to 2015. The results from the estimations suggest that renewable energy consumption significantly reduces the level of emissions; furthermore, its impact increases with higher quantiles. In addition, non-renewable energy consumption increases CO2 emissions, while its magnitude decreases with higher quantiles. The empirical results also confirm the validity of EKC hypothesis for the panel of MENA economies. Policymakers in the region should implement policies and regulations to promote the adoption and use of renewable energy to mitigate carbon emissions

    Sediment transport modeling has been known as an essential issue and challenging task in water resources and environmental engineering. In order to minimize the adverse impacts of the continues sediment deposition that is known as a main source of pollution in the urban area, the self-cleansing method is widely utilized for designing the sewer pipes to create a condition to keep the bottom of channel clean from sedimentation. In the present study, an extensive data range is utilized for modeling the sediment transport in non-deposition with clean bed condition. Regarding the effective parameters involved, four different scenarios are considered for the modeling. To this end, four standalone methods including the M5P, reduced error pruning tree (REPT), random forest (RF) and random tree (RT) and two hybrid models based on rotation forest (ROF) and weighted instances handler wrapper (WIHW) techniques are developed and result compared with three empirical equations. Based on the results, the hybrid WIHW-RT and WIHW-RF models provide better performance in particle Froude number estimation in comparison to other standalone and hybrid models. Performances of the most of the models are found accurate except RT and REPT standalone models. The outcomes revealed that the empirical models have considerable overestimation. Generally, hybrid data mining methods yield more precise estimations of sediment transport in contrast to the regression equations and standalone models. Particularly, both WIHW-RT and WIHW-RF models provide almost the same performances however, as WIHW-RT can better capture the extreme particle Froude number values, it slightly outperforms WIHW-RF. Promising findings of the current study may encourage the implementation of the recommended approaches in alternative hydrological problems

    The Representation of the "Other" in the Turkish TV Advertisements

    Turkey, which has a rich cultural mosaic, consists of the combination of many 'Others, including cultural, religious and ethnic the Others'; the 'Other' as a gender role; as refugees, emigrants, etc. In such a multicultural climate, our research aim is to identify the stereotypes that represent the `Other' in TV advertisements on Turkey's mainstream channels. For this purpose, we examined 101 prime-time TV commercials that were broadcast on the five most watched mainstream TV channels between September and December 2020. Having conducted the quantitative and qualitative content analysis of TV commercials, we revealed the symbolic annihilation of the 'Others' in the Turkish advertising environment, which is accordance with the conservative perception of the country. In line with the international research, we came to the conclusion that the white Turkish men with medium-high socioeconomic status were heavily represented in the prime-time Turkish TV advertising. Nevertheless, it was also revealed that gendered visibility of the others as well as women portrayals were considered only as the 'Other' in the Turkish TV ads. Besides, our research findings overwhelmingly reflect the hegemonic culture and highly traditional views on gender roles

    A Conceptual Framework for Food Loss and Waste in Agri-Food Supply Chains: Circular Economy Perspective

    The importance given to Circular Economy (CE) has further increased in the Agri-Food Supply Chain (AFSC) to combat the challenges of food loss and waste which could be caused by various reasons, such as poor stock management, economic behavior and also, the occurrence of COVID-19 outbreak. The transition from linear to circularity can also enable competitive sustainability from farm to fork in AFSC, which consists of different stages: farmers, food processors, food distributors, food retailers, consumers. Food loss mainly occurs in AFSC at near-farm stages (i.e., harvesting, processing) while food waste happens in AFSC at near-fork stages (i.e., retail, post-consumption). Thus, 6Rs (remanufacture, redesign, reduce, recycle, reuse, and recover) of CE principles can offer various benefits to close the loop of the wastages along with the AFSC. In this chapter, a conceptual framework for circularity in the AFSC is proposed considering the 6Rs. Furthermore, this framework also supports the Sustainable Development Goals. The applicability of the proposed framework is examined and discussed in the case of Turkey using SWOT Analysis. Key findings indicate that there is confusion about food loss and waste issues in Turkey. In addition, the solutions and developments for FLW problem are generally focused on food waste
