    Examining The Daylighting Performance Of Office Buildings On The Example Of The Rectorate Building In Izmir

    The efficient use of energy resources has affect-ed all areas of life, as well as architecture. There are many ways to increase energy efficiency in build-ings. Supporting the efficient use of daylight in the design process, reducing the energy to be used for artificial illumination and reducing heating costs are among the applications that support energy efficien-cy. The issue of supporting daylighting by reducing artificial illumination draws attention, especially in office buildings, due to the high number of hours used during the day. Insufficient light and lack of visual comfort in offices used during the day increase the consumption of electrical energy. Within the scope of this study, a parametric study was conducted to optimize the daylighting performance of an office building. For this purpose, rectorate building of a university, which is used as an office building, was selected for the case study, and the daylight condition of this building was ex-amined. For increasing the daylighting performance of the building some revisions were proposed. Re-sults of this research are discussed with visuals and simulation values

    Industry 4.0 impacts on responsible environmental and societal management in the family business

    echnological innovations are critical for businesses to sustain a competitive advantage in an increasingly competitive globalised environment. Amongst other advances, Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies are having a growing impact on society; they have become a significant part of family business resources to create more sustainable environments and exploit new opportunities. However, few studies have analysed the impacts of I4.0 on responsible environmental management and society in the context of a family business. To take a step toward filling this gap, this study has employed a system dynamics model to evaluate the impacts of I4.0 on the clean production processes of family businesses in an emerging economy and to describe I4.0 practices on determinants of ethical behaviour and environmental management. Implementation is conducted in the packaging sector to analyse the impacts of I4.0 on CO2 emissions, total packaging waste recovery and societal responsibilities on family businesses in Turkey. The results show that ethical business development contributes toward enhancing corporate social responsibility and environmental management systems in an I4.0 context. The findings can inform the efforts of managers, governments and decision-makers to analyse and manage the societal and environmental impacts of their activities to create a more sustainable environment for family businesses

    Analysis of Product Sustainability by Using a Risk-Oriented System Dynamics Model

    Measuring product sustainability plays a significant role to gain competitive advantage. Nevertheless, while achieving sustainable products, all related risks associated with sustainability should be considered. Previous studies are limited by the lack of the dynamic and multidimensional approaches. However, as the decision-making environment is constantly changing in the real world, a dynamic decision-making approach is required. The aim of this study is to develop a dynamic and risk-driven approach to investigate the product sustainability risks. The proposed approach considers all the related risks and interactions with a holistic view covering environmental, economic, and social sustainability. To deal with the dynamic and multidimensional nature of product sustainability, system dynamics is proposed. The results show that increasing the production capacity of the company and maintaining the production emphasizing innovation have led to improvements on both product sustainability and the main dimensions of sustainability. The realization of Industry I4.0 applications can be an effective strategy for the business to increase product sustainability. This study is supported with a case study implemented in the manufacturing industry to confirm the applicability of the model.     Workplace Aggression Profiles and Diverse Emotional Responses: Evidence from Pakistan

    Because of the lack of direct measurements, our understanding of different forms of aggression in organizations is still very limited. As such, there has been increasing calls for going beyond the existing theoretical presumptions and indirect measurements which have been dominating the research. Based on the literature on workplace aggression as well as affective events theory and stressor-emotion model, we intend to identify the unique aggression profiles and to reveal what types of emotional responses they produce for the target employees. We collected data on 249 aggression incidents in Pakistan’s higher education sector through survey. The results of the cluster analysis suggest five distinct types of workplace aggression, which are separated by the particular aggression behaviors involved (e.g. direct-indirect, verbal-physical aggression), perceived strength, blame attribution, third party presence, and identity of the offender. Further statistical analysis indicates that target employees give different emotional responses (anger, sadness, embarrassment, disappointment, feeling insulted) to these diverse mistreatments. As a key contribution, this study makes it clearer that the sources, organizational processes and underlying social dynamics might vary a lot across different aggression experiences depending on what the topic is, who are involved, and how the targets perceive the situation. Second, it presents an initial test regarding how instead of a standard emotional reaction, diverse negative emotional responses accompany different aggression profiles

    Torsional Characteristics of Carbon Nanotubes: Micropolar Elasticity Models and Molecular Dynamics Simulation

    Efficient application of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in nano-devices and nano-materials requires comprehensive understanding of their mechanical properties. As observations suggest size dependent behaviour, non-classical theories preserving the memory of body's internal structure via additional material parameters offer great potential when a continuum modelling is to be preferred. In the present study, micropolar theory of elasticity is adopted due to its peculiar character allowing for incorporation of scale effects through additional kinematic descriptors and work-conjugated stress measures. An optimisation approach is presented to provide unified material parameters for two specific class of single-walled carbon nanotubes (e.g., armchair and zigzag) by minimizing the difference between the apparent shear modulus obtained from molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and micropolar beam model considering both solid and tubular cross-sections. The results clearly reveal that micropolar theory is more suitable compared to internally constraint couple stress theory, due to the essentiality of having skew-symmetric stress and strain measures, as well as to the classical local theory (Cauchy of Grade 1), which cannot accounts for scale effects. To the best of authors' knowledge, this is the first time that unified material parameters of CNTs are derived through a combined MD-micropolar continuum theory

    Urmia lake water depth modeling using extreme learning machine-improved grey wolf optimizer hybrid algorithm

    Lake water level changes are relatively sensitive to the climate-born events that rely on numerous phenomena, e.g., surface soil type, adjacent groundwater discharge, and hydrogeological situations. By incorporating the streamflow, groundwater, evaporation, and precipitation parameters into the models, Urmia lake water depth is simulated in the current study. For this, 40 years of streamflow and groundwater recorded data, respectively collected from 18 and 9 stations, are utilized together with evaporation and precipitation data from 7 meteorological stations. Extreme learning machine (ELM) is hybridized with four different optimizers, namely artificial bee colony (ABC), ant colony optimization for continuous domains (ACOR), whale optimization algorithm (WOA), and improved grey wolf optimizer (IGWO). In the analysis, 13 various scenarios with multiple input combinations are used to train and test the employed models. The best scenarios are then opted based on the performance metrics which are applied to assess the accuracy of the methods. According to the results, the hybrid ELM-IGWO shows better performance compared to the ELM-ABC, ELM-ACOR, and ELM-WOA approaches. Results indicate that the groundwater and persistence of the lake water depth have effective roles in models while incorporating higher number of variables can lower the performance of the models. Statistical analysis showed a 62% improvement in the performance of ELM-IGWO in comparison to the ELM-WOA with regard to the root mean square error. The promising outcomes obtained in this study may encourage the application of the utilized algorithms for modeling alternative hydrological problems

    The Impact of Media and Cultural Beliefs on Women's Participation in Sports in Turkey: The Challenges faced by Turkish Women in Professional Sports

    The fight for gender equality in Turkey extends as far as the sports sector of the economy. Although Turkey has recently seen a fast rise in the participation of women in sports, female athletes are still being marginalized for many reasons. The alarming levels of discrimination discourage females from entering into professional sports in Turkey and have inhibited the growth of the female sports sector in Turkey. This research aims to examine the different roles women have to take with emphasis on explaining the relationship between sports and politics in modern Turkey. The present study explores Turkish women's specific constraints and challenges in professional Sports. Qualitative data were generated from semi-structured interviews conducted with 142 female athletes (both amateur and professionals) across different cities in Turkey. The findings of the study indicate that family influence (chi = 4.39 of 5), wage inequality (chi = 4.31 of 5), media misrepresentation (chi = 4.16 of 5), inadequate sports facilities for women (chi = 4.12 of 5) and high levels of sexual harassment (chi = 3.89 of 5) are the constraints that must be addressed to improve the climate for female participation in sports significantly. The study highlights how these physical activities and sports programs play essential roles in increasing awareness of their importance and improving the overall perception of women in sports in Turkey
