    Exploring the role of artificial intelligence in managing agricultural supply chain risk to counter the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic

    Purpose In India, artificial intelligence (AI) application in supply chain management (SCM) is still in a stage of infancy. Therefore, this article aims to study the factors affecting artificial intelligence adoption and validate AI's influence on supply chain risk mitigation (SCRM). Design/methodology/approach This study explores the effect of factors based on the technology, organization and environment (TOE) framework and three other factors, including supply chain integration (SCI), information sharing (IS) and process factors (PF) on AI adoption. Data for the survey were collected from 297 respondents from Indian agro-industries, and structural equation modeling (SEM) was used for testing the proposed hypotheses. Findings This study's findings show that process factors, information sharing, and supply chain integration (SCI) play an essential role in influencing AI adoption, and AI positively influences SCRM. The technological, organizational and environmental factors have a nonsignificant negative relation with artificial intelligence. Originality/value This study provides an insight to researchers, academicians, policymakers, innovative project handlers, technology service providers, and managers to better understand the role of AI adoption and the importance of AI in mitigating supply chain risks caused by disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic

    The influence of perceived risks on yacht voyagers’ service appraisals: evaluating customer-to-customer interaction as a risk dimension

    This study investigates the impact of customer-to-customer interaction (CCI) related risks on the value perceptions of yacht voyagers. The present study also addresses the interplay with perceived value and other service outcomes, i.e., trust and loyalty. Data were collected from 359 voyagers and the model was tested via structural equation modeling. The results reveal that service-related and psychosocial risk dimensions are negatively associated with perceived value and CCI significantly influences other risk dimensions. Perceived value influences both trust and loyalty and trust has a significant impact on loyalty. The findings demonstrate the importance of CCI risks for high interaction services

    The modernisation process in Turkey which had started with the proclamation of the Republic in 1923 has also influenced architecture and then has led to the emergence of modern design. International architectural languages began to be sprawled much faster in cities like İzmir where different cultures have been living together for centuries. The city plan, prepared for the completely burned areas in the fire in 1924, shaped today's İzmir urban pattern as the first example of the modernist/positivist approach of the period. Due to the development of planning laws, different morphologies have emerged periodically in the city's housing architecture. The modernist apartment buildings of the city, which were built especially in Alsancak, Güzelyalı, and Karșıyaka after the 1950s, were diversified in other districts of the city in the following years. This architectural language tried to integrate mutually different international architectural language on behalf of local modernism in the city. This paper aims to present these local modernism efforts in terms of the multi-story apartment buildings of İzmir. The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the importance of apartment blocks which have had an important role in the identity of the city by revealing the architects and buildings of that period. These buildings which both reflect international architectural languages and local modernisms are investigated in terms of their architectural style, plan layout, facade characteristics, material selection, and interior elements.     A conceptual framework model for an effective cold food chain management in sustainability environment

    Purpose: There is a large number of perishable foodstuffs produced, stored, distributed and delivered daily around the world. Almost all except for root vegetables are sensitive products to temperature. Thus, adopting uninterrupted and appropriate logistics activities with predetermined range of temperature from production site until end-user is critical for ensuring required quality and safety. If a mistake is made during either transport or storage, it not only becomes risky for human health, but also generates huge food waste for the environment and negative economic impact for food providers. Therefore, this study aims to identify all potential factors affecting the cold chain performance in the food industry and to design a framework that includes these factors. This framework is also a roadmap for managers, food providers and logistics parties for sustainable cold chain management. Design/methodology/approach: Considering, tangible and intangible potential criteria, the ultimate goal of this study is to identify potential criteria affecting cold food chain performance and propose a conceptual framework including 12 main criteria. Next, the importance order of each criterion and the causal relationships between them are determined. In this study, this relationship among criteria is analyzed by using fuzzy Decision-making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) approach because of its ability to solve complex problems by ensuring causal relationship among factors, additionally to determine importance order. Finally, suggestions for administrative implications are presented. Findings: Fuzzy DEMATEL was used to explain the causal link and importance order among identified drivers. The analysis shows that five criteria (C1, C3, C8, C9 and C12) belong to cause (influential) groups and remaining seven criteria belong to effect (influenced) groups. The highest influential criterion is staff (C8) and is followed by technical issues (C9) as the second most influential factor. Additionally, top three most important factors are traceability (C7), staff (C8) and cold transportation (C5). According to the numerical results of fuzzy DEMATEL implementations, suggestions for managerial implementations are presented. Practical implications: The main contribution of the study is to propose meaningful suggestions for managerial implications about sustainable cold chain in food industry for businesses and to examine causal relations between criteria and to rank criteria in descending importance order. Originality/value: To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that focuses on determining the potential criteria affecting cold supply chain performance both theoretically and empirically in the sustainability environment.     Cyber-physical-social-information-thinking hyperspace: a manifold of cyberspatial entities

    Purpose: This paper aims to establish a theoretic framework to provide a fundamental understanding of cyberspatial objects, their existence and their identification scheme while providing a connection between cyber-enabled spaces and cyberspace. It develops an avenue to quantify general philosophical and theoretical questions, precisely, inherently spatial basis that produces an unprecedented space–time continuum, in which cyber-enabled relations evolve. Design/methodology/approach: Multidisciplinary theoretical approaches are needed to describe complex systems, which in this paper are integrated in a quest for the principles underlying the structural organization and dynamics of cyberspace. A theoretic framework is presented, and the spatial conception of cyber-enabled physical, social, information and thinking spaces and entities existence are provided. Findings: With spatial objects and spatial properties, cyberspace is inherently spatial. Its basic constructs are founded on its spatial qualities and producing radical space–time compression, cyber-enabled spaces in which dynamic relations develop and thrive. The cyberspatial object operations are primarily built on foundations that depend on physical space and other spatial metaphors. Information space, basically missing in the literature, is an important part of cyberspace. Research limitations/implications: This work suggested a novel analytical approach to describing cyberspace from broader perspectives and fields. Due to the novelty and divergence of cyber concepts, an interdisciplinary study and methodology are needed. Thus, more research toward theoretical direction could help many of the practical implementations of concepts. Practical implications: The research is of particular significance in cyberspatial mechanics to describe the dynamics and behavior of cyber physical systems. For example, object-based analysis functions like spatial query, node pattern analysis, cluster analysis, spatial similarity analysis and location modeling. Originality/value: Complementing the existing literature and defining information space to the research sphere, a theoretical framework providing a fundamental understanding of cyberspatial objects and the general cyberspace foundation has been proposed, resulting in a formalized concept of existence, interactions and applications and services, with respect to philosophy, science and technology, respectively

    Hybrid models for suspended sediment prediction: optimized random forest and multi-layer perceptron through genetic algorithm and stochastic gradient descent methods

    Owing to the nonlinear and non-stationary nature of the suspended sediment transport in rivers, suspended sediment concentration (SSC) modeling is a challenging task in environmental engineering. Investigation of SSC is of paramount importance in river morphology and hydraulic structures operation. To this end, for SSC modeling, first random forest (RF) and multi-layer perceptron (MLP) standalone models were developed, and then, they were optimized with genetic algorithm (GA) and stochastic gradient descent (SGD) to develop GA-MLP, GA-RF, SGD-MLP, and SGD-RF hybrid models. Variety of input scenarios are implemented for SSC prediction to find the best input combination. The streamflow and SSC data collected from two stations of Minnesota and San Joaquin rivers, respectively, located at South Dakota and California are utilized in the current study. Accuracies of the developed models are examined by means of three performance criteria of correlation coefficient (CC), scattered index (SI), and Willmott’s index of agreement (WI). A significant promotion in accuracy of hybrid models has been seen in contrast to their standalone counterparts. As can be deduced from the results, GA-MLP-5 and GA-RF-5 models with CC of 0.950 and 0.944, SI of 0.290 and 0.308, and WI of 0.974 and 0.971, respectively, were found as best models for prediction of SSC at Minnesota river. The developed SGD-MLP-5 and SGD-RF-5 models with CC of 0.900 and 0.901, SI of 0.339 and 0.339, and WI of 0.945 and 0.946, respectively, gave accurate results at San Joaquin river. Through the application of SGD algorithm, the adaptive learning rate, epochs, rho, L1 and L2 were activated and presumed as 0.004, 10, 1, 0.000009 and 0, respectively. The ExpRectifier was considered as san activation operation due to its better efficiency in comparison with its alternatives for predicting SSC in SGD-MLP model. According to the results, the fifth scenario that incorporates SSCt–1, SSCt–2, Qt, Qt–1, and Qt–2 were found superior for SSC modeling in the studied rivers. The recommended hybrid algorithms based on GA and SGD optimization algorithms are proposed as practical tools for solving complex environmental problems
