The McDonaldization of the Danish Police

    No full text
Using Ritzer’s McDonaldization theory, this article argues that the dominant trend in recent Danish police history has been ideals of efficiency, computability, predictability and control. However, it is clear that the question of political power is important when analyzing the McDonaldization of the Danish police, given its central role in the exercise of state power. I therefore argue that the McDonaldization of the Danish police marks a transformation of bureaucratic rule characterized by a shift from a legal to an economic interpretation of the central ideals of bureaucracy

On the Ways of Writing the History of the State

Foucault’s governmentality lectures at the Collège de France analyze the history of the state through the lens of governmental reason. However, these lectures largely omit consideration of the relationship between discipline and the state, prioritizing instead raison d’État and liberalism as dominant state technologies. To remedy this omission, I turn to Foucault’s early studies of discipline and argue that they provide materials for the reconstruction of a genealogy of the “disciplinary state.” In reconstructing this genealogy, I demonstrate that the disciplinary state marks the “dark side” of the liberal state, a dark side which is, more-over, largely obscured in the governmentality lectures. I further construe the difference be-tween this early genealogy of the state and the later governmental studies in methodologi-cal terms. At stake in this difference is the historiographic status of capitalism and social conflict. Foucault’s governmentality lectures employ what I term an “idealist disavowal,” thereby treating capitalism and social conflict as irrelevant to the history of the state. The early disciplinary studies, on the other hand, enact a “materialist avowal,” by which these objects are avowed as central to the explanation of how and why the state develops. Final-ly, I argue that Foucault’s governmental genealogy of the liberal state is explanatorily and analytically incomplete, while the genealogy of the disciplinary state contributes to its completion on both fronts

Strategies of action among young people on the edge of Danish society

    No full text
The increase in marginalised young people in Denmark points to a need notonly for political initiatives, but also for more knowledge. Most of the knowledge that we have about this group of young people is characterised by its focus on risk factors and its focus on measures to prevent or alleviate marginalisation. This means that we have information about marginalised youth in relation to substance abuse, to homelessness, mental health issues, etc. while welack knowledge of how young people create coherence and meaning in theirlives despite or with these factors. Youth research offers an interdisciplinary, theoretical and methodological approach to young peoples’ lives, focusingon their perspectives. In this article, we present an analysis of marginalisedyouth and their everyday life at the margins of Danish society. We employ theconcept of ‘action strategies’ to enable analyses examining the individual’spatterns of action, while situating these in their life situations. In the analysis, we find three strategies: mistrust strategy, isolation strategy and valuestrategy. Using insights from youth research, we are able to develop a moredetailed, nuanced picture of young people at the margins of Danish society

Struggle for Recognition versus Communicative Action – A Comparative analysis of the concept of praxis in Honneths and Habermas’ political philosophy and political sociology

    No full text
The concept of praxis is one of the most fundamental concepts in political philosophy and political sociology from Antiquity to our time. Aristotle creates a concept of praxis, which is one of the fundamental concepts in political philosophy and political sociology. Hegel gives the concept a new formation with his concept of praxis as Sittlichkeit or Ethical Life. Both Habermas and Honneth take their point of departure in the young Hegel’s scriptures, when they try to formulate a new concept of praxis, which can be relevant for our time. In a smart maneuver, Habermas places language as a substitute for Hegel’s concept of the spirit. On this basis, Habermas succeeds in formulating a practical political philosophy, which can unite praxis and Ethical Life in a theory of communicative action. Habermas’ political philosophy leads immediately to a political sociology, which can be the basis for an empirical sociological exploration of the institutions of modern society. Honneth is critical towards Habermas’ linguistic form of political sociology. Honneth wants to sustain classical critical theory’s substantial perspective. He focusses on Hegel’s concept of struggle for recognition, which he places in a modern democratic perspective. Honneths political sociology forms the basis for an empirical research in conflicts and violations in the institutions of society.&nbsp

I december 2019 sendte Det Kgl.

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
This article will provide a preliminary overview of Finnish migration toSugar Island, Michigan, which occurred primarily between 1915 and 1940, based onnarrative sources and census documents. It will introduce and apply social networkanalysis (SNA) methods and network visualizations to this community and sets thestage for a future, in-depth study of the Finns of Sugar Island. This article is part of alarger project HUMANA-Human Migration and Network Analysis: Developing NewResearch Methods for the Study of Human Migration and Social Change (https://blogs.helsinki.fi/humananetworks/), funded by the Finnish Kone Foundation. Thisproject will develop new methodologies for studying the human past by using networkanalysis to better understand social, political, administrative, economic, and geospatialnetworks. For the purposes of this article, our main sources are the US Censusreturns from 1920 to 1940, and they will be supported by other archival and secondarysources. The scope of analysis will focus primarily on a few prominent individualsbut will also provide information on the social structures of the Finnish community.Ultimately, this case study develops an experimental computer model of the SugarIsland Finnish community and will provide a glimpse into the authors’ forthcomingproject that aims at building a robust dynamic model of the entire Sugar Island communityover the period of 1850-194
