Foucault and Ecology
On the basis of a definition of ecology centred on Merleau-Ponty's thought, this essay examines the various phases of Foucauldian thought and their respective relationships to possible ecological outcomes: the Dionysian phase, which lasts until The Order of Things; the microphysics of power phase, in which a philosophy of the will that radically breaks with any idea of the original becomes central; and the late Foucault phase, characterised by the themes of the hermeneutics of the self, subjectivity and critique. In the latter period in particular, in which Foucault's rapprochement with Canguilhem and the idea of a living being immersed in a dialectical relationship with the environment and with others is very strong, a model is identified that is particularly amenable to interpretation in ecological terms. The essay concludes with some research hypotheses on the possible relationship between a philosophy of the will, such as that mediated by Foucault from Nietzsche and Schopenhauer, and ecology
Make America Relevant Again! Teaching American Studies in Denmark
Danes are pro-American and generally fascinated by the United States, but university students are not flocking to American studies programs in Denmark. During the last five years, enrollment numbers have dropped in the country’s only BA and MA programs in American studies at the University of Southern Denmark, and fewer courses in American topics are offered at other Danish universities. This article presents the American studies teaching landscape in Denmark and zooms in on the BA and MA programs in American studies at the University of Southern Denmark in the city of Odense to analyze the problem of enrollment numbers and suggest a remedy consisting of a greater focus on “Global America” in context, greater focus on solving real-life problems in class, and greater teaching cooperation across the Nordic countries
Teaching North American Studies in Finland: Searching for Crossdisciplinary Perspectives
In “Teaching North American Studies in Finland,” the authors examine the historical roots of Finnish interest in North America, which can be traced back to early Finnish immigration and a broader fascination with Indigenous cultures. Over the past several decades, this interest has grown within academic circles, leading to the creation of several cross-disciplinary North American studies programs in Finland. There is a long tradition of research in fields such as Indigenous studies, immigration history, ethnic minorities, media studies, and environmental issues. While these areas remain central, new scholarship—focused on settler colonialism, decolonizing research, and transnational American studies—has added depth and new perspectives to the field in recent years. This article primarily highlights the North American studies program at the University of Helsinki, but it also touches on research and teaching at the University of Turku
