Emerging Ties-Nigerian Entrepreneurs and Chinese Business Associates
Africa-China relationships consists of various interactions between government officials, to large corporations, and individuals. This article examines the emerging relationship between Africa and China through the ethnography of a Nigerian entrepreneur who seeks to expand his business by selling to Chinese clients. Entrepreneurship is lauded in Nigerian society. China's increasing presence in the country is often presented as a positive economic opportunity for Nigerians, including entrepreneurs. This research highlights the complex nature of business relationships between Nigerian entrepreneurs and Chinese counterparts. To build trust and business ties, the entrepreneur highlighted manages his brand via social media, utilizes social capital, and taps into relatedness and kinship within Chinese business circles
The Paradoxes in the Use of the Panopticon as a Theoretical Reference in Urban Video-surveillance Studies: A Case Study of a CCTV System of a Brazilian city
This article aims at introducing the relation between the use of CCTV systems in urban spaces and social control. More specifically, its purpose is to problematize and reaffirm the use of the theoretical background of the panopticon in order to interpret such a relation. In CCTV studies, as a consequence of literal interpretations, as well as the existence of a hegemony in ethnographic studies carried out in control rooms, the theoretical use of the panopticon is then questioned. In this article, based on an ethnographic study conducted in the public spaces surveilled by a CCTV system in a Brazilian city, it can be concluded that the effects of social control through surveillance are paradoxical. The indifferent way in which citizens deal with surveillance, or even the lack of awareness of it, imposes limits to the interpretation of the system as a tool of social control. Thus, the use of the panopticon becomes problematic. However, this research has shown how the presence of cameras in public spaces makes it conducive for a state of control in the form of a network whose project would be a mythical and homogeneous ordering of the spaces. The importance of the interpretation of Jeremy Bentham’s panopticon by Michel Foucault is then reaffirmed, that is, panopticism as a trend of normalization and moralization of the public spaces
Dangerous youth or dangerous research: On the development of strategies in ethic situations and dilemmas in research with young male gang members
This article explores how research along with young men in gangs challenges the traditional moral, legal, and professional ethical guidelines in social research, especially in relation to protection, confidentiality and anonymization when conducting so-called dangerous research. Based on an ongoing research project involving 15 young gang members’ stories about their upbringing, everyday life, and the social pedagogical interventions they have been subject to, the article explores a number of ethical situations and dilemmas that emerged. It focuses on the dangerous aspect of research with the young gang members, i.e. research that may be dangerous for young gang members to participate in and dangerous for the researcher to conduct. It shows how this intensifies ethical and moral considerations that need further exploration and leads to a discussion of ethical guidelines in social research. The article argues researchers to make the dangerousness of their projects clear and the relevant ethical issues and to deploy the concept of subject-oriented ethics. This concept may encompass a number of ethical dilemmas and situations that arise in dangerous research with young gang members, especially when developing ethical strategies along with the young people
