A Day in the Desert 
 
 
All things said and done,  
There’s never been a saying that’s rang truer than 
You don’t know what you had until you’ve lost it. 
 
I’m sitting here, 
With the elephant in the room sitting on my chest, 
People I considered friends avoiding my eyes. 
Too painful, I surmise, to acknowledge someone else’s loss, 
When all you’ve known is life.  
 
But it doesn’t excuse the exclusion of the obvious, 
Nor the burning feeling of wasted time and energy  
I’ve spent on people who do not reciprocate my love. 
 
And I lost someone who loved me more than I him, 
And I’m feeling so utterly hypocritical, 
And who can comfort someone who knows  
They ignored his last call. 
 
It was a harsh slap to the face when I heard the news, 
And it reverberated through my bones.  
 
Oh, to have him talk to me one last time. 
I truly would give anything to hear him 
Alive and well and though sometimes cynical, 
This time, I promise I would listen. 
 
I make jokes to soothe the pain, 
Like VapoRub on a congested chest.  
But how well does it really work, 
And is it not just a desperate attempt to alleviate the symptoms? 
 
My throat aches terribly as if guilt-ridden. 
But all I know as I rub my dry eyes, 
Digging for tears, 
Is an utter emptiness.

A dried up well that begs for more water, 
But there is none left to give.  
 
Even my plants are dying, 
Shriveled up corpses of what once used to be beautiful, 
Decaying in tune with me. 
 
Tonight, as I lay in bed, 
I pray that this drought will soon pass.

Khao Piak Sen (Rice Noodle Soup) 
Cherilyn Saechao 
 
 
 
Life is khao piak sen.  
You put your seasonings, 
You add your desired amount of noodles 
You add your desired amount of soup, 
And you can add whatever vegetables you want. 
This bowl is your bowl, not mine. 
You are the noodles. 
Noodles are made from scratch. 
Labor and patience to make it right. 
There are important steps. 
 three flours:  jasmine rice, tapioca, and sweet rice. 
slowly add boiling water, and mix with your hands. 
Use the wrong temperature of water, 
It will break. 
Add too less water, 
It will become dry. 
Add too much water, 
It will become too sticky. 
But why give up? 
Just restart, try again. 
You are the noodles. 
Life is khao piak sen.

The bell on the door lets you know:  
you are here  
 
Motor lodge, motor-inn 
motorcade of beautiful families 
 
Truck-stop diner fare 
all cast in biscuit-gloom  
 
From the counter you turn  
and watch 
 
 Weak-eyed dogs sniffing 
the tired barmaid across the street  
 
The arcade 
 the pop-fly, cracker-jack cacophony of voices 
 
Arcane Segregation 
Land of Neon Welcome 
 
Land of Sanitation 
of Rotting River 
 
Candy-apple-red-one 
with the speedometer broken 
 
Hoodwinked girls yawning 
in lemon-curd yellow  
 
Booths, frayed hem, Friday night

Waking up before sunrise, sleeping for a few hours, rushing
to class, then sleeping for a few more hours, breaking fast
at sunset, praying at the local mosque, and staying up late
to do homework—this is the cycle so many Muslim students
find themselves in during the month of Ramadan. 
For 30 days Muslims all around the world fast from sunrise
to sunset in an act of worship. Abstaining from eating or
drinking anything is to allow reflection on those less
fortunate and gratitude for the blessings of life. It’s also a
time when families reunite. More than often, calendars are
booked with iftar parties every weekend and there is a
special prayer, taraweeh, prayed every night at mosques
everywhere. 
For Muslim college students, this can be a tricky time,
balancing spiritual endeavors with busy schedules and other academic responsibilities. 
Imaan Khaki, a third-year cellular molecular biology major and president of the Muslim Student Association (MSA), finds comfort in
the universality of Ramadan.
“Knowing that Muslims around the world are united in their effort to become closer to God is very calming and encouraging overall
and reminds me of the loving community I’m blessed to be a part of,” Khaki said.
When it comes to balancing school life with Ramadan, Khaki said that she works ahead of time to schedule her classes in the
afternoons and changes her study schedule to after breaking her fast so she can study with energy. 
Hawa Sankareh is a second-year biology major from Gambia. While Ramadan is a reminder that family back home is celebrating
traditions she grew up with, Sankareh has created her own community in Seattle through MSA and other avenues.
“That was really helpful for me because having a Muslim community and having Muslim friends even outside of MSA, because I was
lucky that in my first year, my roommate was Muslim. We were able to do a lot together like waking up for suhoor and there was an
understanding which not everyone gets the opportunity to have a Muslim roommate,” Sankareh said.

When navigating chaotic school schedules paired with packed Ramadan activities, Sankareh acknowledged the harm a negative
mindset can do. Ramadan is a month of spiritual growth, tranquility and peaceful times.Even with school, it can still be that. Focusing
on the sleep you’re going to lose and how hungry you’ll be during class makes the experience of Ramadan harder than it needs to be. 
“If you’re going into Ramadan and you’re telling yourself ‘oh, I have to fast, I’m going to be hungry,’ you’re kind of making a list of all
the things that you don’t appreciate. I think going into the month and seeing the good instead of the negative and seeing it as, ‘okay,
we’re fasting, but this is discipline,’” Sankareh shared. 
For Muslim students, Ramadan is about more than just abstaining from food and drink—it’s a time of spiritual reflection, self-
discipline and strengthening one’s connection to faith and community. To attain the full potential of their growth for the month, they
are challenged to overcome the surface-level obstacles of sleep and food. 
Sankareh reflected on how Ramadan is a time of growth that should extend beyond the month.
“This is a time where you can change those habits and you get to build that discipline and you come out of the month with habits
that you didn’t go into with. You come out a better person and a better version of yourself. Having discipline will help you in the long
run because these are responsibilities you have to yourself outside of Ramadan as well,” Sankareh said. 
Bayan Farag is a Seattle U alumna and former member of the MSA board. When asked to reflect on Ramadan at Seattle U, Farag
shared that the community at the university made Ramadan even more special. MSA hosts iftar gatherings on campus during the
month were especially noteworthy. 
“There was something truly profound about the community coming together, breaking bread as the sunset, and sharing in the spirit
of Ramadan,” Farag said. “Whether it was the quiet moments of gratitude during prayer or the lively discussions that followed, these
iftars reminded me of the beauty of community and the power of coming together during sacred times.”
These memories of community and growth of self are what surpassed the hunger and exhaustion of the month as iftar gatherings
symbolize the bigger picture of Ramadan; for Muslims to overcome day-to-day struggles and build a deeper sense of empathy and
gratitude. 
“The iftars were a reminder that even in the busiest of times, they’re always space for connection, kindness, and celebration,” Farag
shared. 
Ramadan is more than just a test of endurance—it is a time of reflection, discipline and unity. Through shared meals, prayers, and the
strength of community, Muslim students find a balance between faith and academics, carrying the lessons of the month far beyond
its 30 days.

Last Wednesday writers, scholars, tribal members,
indigenous people and students all gathered in the hub of
the Byte Cafe to attend the Lushootseed lecture series
hosted by the Indigenous Peoples Institute and the
Lemieux Library. Local author Janet Yoder spoke and
spotlighted her book “Where the Language Lives: Vi Hilbert
and the Gift of the Lushootseed.” In the book, Yoder reflects
on her friendship and mentorship with Skagit elder Vi
Hilbert and her work to preserve the native Lushootseed
language. For Yoder, her relationship with Hilbert began
when she first took Hilbert’s class at the University of
Washington in 1978. She was transformed by the vital
importance of the Lushootseed language, native stories,
and preserving history through culture in distinct
communities within the Pacific Northwest. 
The Lushootseed language is credited as Seattle’s original language
from the Coast Salish People and is spoken in the Suquamish,
Duwamish, Snoqualmie, Puyallup, Muckleshoot, Squaxin and
Nisqually territories. Today, there is no remaining demographic of
people who speak Lushootseed as their first language. 
Yoder described how she first began writing her book after a trip up
the Skagit River with the late Skagit elder many years ago, and how
she eventually finished the book during the COVID-19 pandemic. She
detailed how Hilbert was very involved and influential in the writing
process.
“Afterwards I asked her if I could come interview her, about what it
was like to be back on Skagit with all these eagles. We just talked and
talked, then I transcribed it all and we just talked and talked,” Yoder
said.

Yoder mentioned the importance of being intentional and authentic when it comes to storytelling. She also described how the
pandemic gave her the push to complete the book.
“The pandemic hit and I thought if I don’t survive this time because I am not a young person, what would I regret having not
completed? It came to me that I needed to pull this all together,” Yoder said. 
Hilbert was known for her lifelong work of transcribing and conserving Native American history within Seattle and the Pacific
Northwest. She received many awards and accolades for her work in linguistics and her dedication to teaching in academia,
including honorary doctorates from the University of Washington and Seattle University.  
During the lecture, she highlighted Hilbert’s unique experiences and personal struggles, part of growing up in the early 20th century
particularly living through the Second World War, surviving Native American Boarding Schools in her youth, and her fight to access
education in the Public Schooling system. Yoder’s storytelling highlighted Hilbert’s relentless fight against adversity and her faith in
herself to not fail. Enduring Native American oppression, Yoder gives a play-by-play on how Hilbert worked to take control of her
future and write her own story. 
“So I wrote and when I felt like it was finished. I printed it off for her and we talked about it. She gave it her blessing and it was
published,” Yoder said. 
Jill La Pointe, director of the Indigenous People’s Institute at
Seattle U and granddaughter of Hilbert, was in attendance and
spoke about how the book commemorated her grandmother’s work
and commitment to her native community. 
“I can just close my eyes and vision being with my grandmother and
being in these places. She writes so beautifully and gives such a
wonderful introduction to who she was,” La Pointe said. 
La Pointe also reiterated how the book acknowledged Hilbert’s
spirit and commitment to lifelong learning.
“That’s why she did the work, she wanted people whenever they
were interested to have the materials available to them to pick up.”
Another person in attendance was First-year Business
Management Major Ajay Custer. Custer was in awe of the diverse turnout of attendees and the community engagement that the
event promoted. Custer was more impressed to learn about the lasting impact Hilbert has had on the Seattle U Community and
beyond. 
“The power that one person can have on a large scale, doing something like spreading a language on its last legs and inspiring so
many people is my biggest takeaway. Work hard and you can do a lot,” Custer said. 
Custer talked about the significance of the university hosting events that pay homage to trailblazers like Hilbert and how they bring
the community together. 
“I’ve always been interested in going to outside lectures for topics I find interesting, native languages are one of them. I find there’s a
lot of connections. I am a philosophy minor so I like hearing what people have to say.” 
The next Lushootseed event, a part of the series, is underway and will take place March 19, featuring Native American storyteller
and artist Robert Fernandez.
