Background: Teachers’ conceptions about teaching and learning guide their beliefs, knowledge, and attitudes that impact their understanding of the proposed curriculum. Studying their origins, functions, and changes in didactic contexts makes it possible to rethink teaching practices more effectively. Objectives: With this research, we hope to answer the following questions: (a) what conceptions do teachers mobilise when managing and developing a statistical learning project from the perspective of exploratory data analysis? (b) what changes in conceptions might result from this experience? Design: For that, we structured qualitative research of the case study type, with recordings of a focus group analysed with the technological support of the NVIVO software. Setting and participants: The research sample consisted of six elementary school teachers from three public schools in Rio Grande do Sul, members of a collaborative group of continuing education offered by a local public university, and selected from many publicised calls in the second semester of 2021. Data collection and analysis: Data were collected in a focus group carried out with teachers after their experience in continuing education, tutoring, and development of learning projects. Results: It was possible to identify changes between the teachers’ initial and final conceptions of statistics, mobilised during the development of the research projects. Conclusions: This allows us to suggest that the statistical learning project can favour changes in teachers’ statistical conceptions, which, in the light of our theoretical framework, are signs of learning

Teacher Action and Student Action in Mathematics Classes Based on the Exploration of Learning Objects on Digital Board: Categorisations and Connections

    Get PDF
Background: The methods by which mathematics content can be taught and learned using technologies and how they condition the production of mathematical knowledge have usually been the subject of our research. These investigations have allowed us to describe, understand and analyse the educational context in which we researchers are inserted, also allowing us to highlight the teacher’s and the students’ actions, their categorisations, and connections during the implementation of classes. These reasons motivated us to carry out this investigation. Objectives: To characterise the teacher’s and the students’ actions, highlighting their connections. Design: Qualitative research based on content analysis. Setting and participants: The research subjects were 1 teacher; 24 elementary school students, 10 students of the 6th grade and 14 of the 7th grade, and 12 high-school 3rd graders, all enrolled in the Paraná state network. Data collection and analysis: The actions were captured through field notes and video recordings, later transcribed. Results: In view of the information collected and the analyses carried out, 22 categories were evidenced for the teacher’s action and 40 categories for the student’s action. Conclusions: We proved that some of the teacher's actions triggered several other students’ actions. However, we identified three categories of students’ actions unrelated to the teacher’s actions nor to the performance of the activity provided by the learning objects. In fact, such actions were provided by the learning environment in which students used technological resources

Interpretative Knowledge of Prospective Kindergarten and Primary Teachers in the Context of Subtraction

Background: Teaching and learning with understanding leads to the adoption of “what” and “how” each individual knows as starting points, requiring from teachers a specialised knowledge, called Interpretative Knowledge (IK), which supports constructive feedback and pedagogical actions aimed at developing the students’ mathematical knowledge and skills. Objectives: This paper aims to trace and discuss the problematic areas of the IK presented by prospective kindergarten and primary teachers’ (PTs) when attributing meaning to students’ productions within the scope of subtraction. Design: The focus is on the IK revealed by PTs when analysing and giving meaning to students’ written productions on a task involving subtraction between natural numbers. Setting and participants: Twenty-six PTs attending the only course focusing on teaching and learning mathematics they have in their curriculum participated in the research. Data collection and analysis: The data collected and analysed, from the qualitative and interpretative perspective of content, come from the written productions of the PTs on a task for teacher education, together with the audio and video recordings of the group discussions. Results: The results show a “linear” interpretation of the students’ productions, associated with a single way of understanding subtraction, limiting the PTs’ development of constructive feedback and pedagogical interventions, so their practice is not based simply on “teaching how to do.” Conclusions: The limited interpretation and, consequently, the limited development of constructive feedback stood out, showing the need for teacher education to focus on tasks specifically conceptualised for developing the specificities of (prospective) teachers’ knowledge that would enable them to give meaning to students’ production and assume the associated mathematical reasoning as a starting point for practice

Science Education and Indigenous Knowledge in a Decolonial Perspective: An Argentine Case

    Get PDF
Background: In the context of Intercultural Bilingual Education, various explanations of natural phenomena circulate. Objectives: We wonder how such diversity is addressed in science classrooms taking into account the intercultural and decolonial approaches proposed by the Epistemology of the South. The objective of this research is to explore the relationships between a teacher's curricular decisions, their conceptions about the nature of science and indigenous knowledge, and their students' conceptions about the nature of science and indigenous knowledge. Design: A qualitative and exploratory research is carried out, as a previous diagnosis for an action-research. Setting and Participants: The case study is a natural sciences course in a Bilingual Intercultural Education Teacher Training Program in Argentina; the participants were the teacher who teaches the course and his 15 students. Data collection and analysis: Data are collected through non-participant observation, and interviews and content analysis is performed with categories defined a priori from the literature. Results: There is a great difference with respect to the activities proposed for the topics on scientific knowledge and that on indigenous knowledge, which reflects the teacher's conceptions. There is a lack of dialogue between the knowledge approached, as well as a lack of reflection on the problems that arise. The students' conceptions reflect these tensions. Conclusions: This suggests rethinking the teaching of science in the context of the intercultural modality in order to reverse the hegemonic role that scientific knowledge continues to play

    Get PDF
