In the history of the Spanish travel literature, the 1840s have a particular place: after the Napoleonic Wars and the first Carlist War came a period of relative calm which encouraged visitors to Spain but also the Spanish to travel outside the Iberian Peninsula. France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany are among the most attractive options. The variety of available texts gives the possibility to distinguish between at least three variants or perspectives: the travel story as discovery, as verification and as travel guide. This article intends to introduce these diverse perspectives from representative authors whose itineraries are partly similar: Modesto Lafuente, Ramón Mesonero Romanos y Ángel Fernández de los Ríos. There will be a special emphasis on the first author because he contributed in a special way to the history of the travel literature. Once the work of the others has been presented, there will be a brief conclusion to compare the variants presented.
The poetical image reported to the visited places is an artistic device that makes travel books a «literary piece of work». In this article I offer an anthology of the images about Andalucía given by their visitors in the XIXth Century. The most common image is about the bipolarity North/ South, but there are and we can read many other images: the brilliant metaphors used to described Cádiz as a «sea-shell» or a «ship» and specially for describing the charm of women there.
The current paper deals with the study of the printing corrections that were made to the first edition of La pícara Justina. To do so, eleven copies of the editio princeps have been analyzed. The analysis of several copies not only allows us to explain the meaning of several passages, but also to draw some conclusions on the orthography of that period, the calligraphy of the printer’s manuscript and the typology of the mistakes that were made by the composers. Also, the comparative analysis might show some light on the possible participation of the author during the editing process in the Printing House.
España de sol a sol (2001) by Alfonso Armada gives an example of the development of the «travel narrative» genre in Spain today. Faced with the «end of travel» (Marc Augé), he proposes a renovation of the perception of the familiar by travelling across Spain and Portugal and by substituting «endotic» (Georges Pérec) for exotic. The poetics in the narrative differs greatly from that by travelling writers of «social realism», in the Spain of the sixties. Interpretation replaces information, the poetic image prevails over the referential function of language, and polysemy, omnipresent intertexuality and metatextuality play an important part. The change also affects the links between text and image, which are now more complementary than redundant. Playing with stereotypes, the photography actively contributes to establishing argumentative strategies meant to make the reader-viewer adhere to the message, all while affirming itself as an autonomous aesthetic experience.
In the present paper, from a comparative point of view, the literary roots of two of the most outstanding proposals for the renewal of the Spanish and Catalan narratives in the twenties and thirties are tried to describe. It is possible to find out the parallelisms between the work of Antonio Espina and Francesc Trabal in the dialogue with the aesthetical experience of the European vanguards to which they are linked by the narrative folly of their own contracdictions. Having in consideration the possibilities offered by the poem in prose or the microromance, similar responses could be traced between the «Grup of Sabadell» and the «Nova Novarum». In this way, Pájaro Pinto (1927) and Luna de copas (1929), by Espina, and L’ home que es va perdre (1929) or Judita (1939) by Trabal will be analyzed together.
This article sets out the study of the motif of the representation of the man as an empty suit that appears in a significant way in the first half of the 20th century in the Spanish poetry, in authors like Gerardo Diego, Pedro Salinas, Rafael Alberti, Federico García Lorca, Emilio Prados, Vicente Aleixandre and Luis Cernuda.
During this time, and not only in the above mentioned authors but in many others, the motif crosses different aesthetics and diverse literary movements, evolving and adapting to the exigencies of each of them, without losing its original basic meaning of falsification, lack of authenticity and superficiality.
The work consists of the study of the evolution of this motif that goes back to the Baroque poetry and even before and still is present in the Spanish poetry after surrealism. From an initial valuation of the empty man, represented only by the external clothes that he wears, like in the ultraist and creationist poetry, the motif evolves towards the negative connotations that acquires during the surrealism, that views this image as a sign of the alienation of the man and the contemporary society. This critical and negative vision would cause that the motif derives at the end towards the preference by the natural man, the naked man or the animal man of surrealistic and social poetry in a process of returning to humanization and in an attempt of recovery of the authentic being of the man.
In Spanish literature, travelling has always been conditioned by philosophy of space. The interpretations of landscape, territory and history signed by Unamuno, Ortega y Gasset or Eugenio d’Ors influenced the way in which their contemporaries or later traveler writers narrated their travel stories. Such understanding allows to divide Spanish travel writers in pro-spacial writers (they defend, in both explicit or implicit ways, a unique, national and catholic territory) and counter-spacial writers (they argue about this same perspective). The analysis of some aspects of Pemán’s, Díaz-Plaja’s, Aub’s or Gutiérrez Solana’s works, among others, allows a discussion on the possibility of this classification and a reflection on the relationship between Politics and Literature during the 20th century.
Having been written and represented around 1610-1612 and taking place in the city of Toledo, La doncella Teodor is a comedy that belongs to Lope de Vega’s «Toledo cycle». However, this is only a pretext to take the spectator on a journey to the courts of Oran, Persia and Constantinople, exotic places where a maidservant named Teodor gains the admiration of wise men. In an attempt to offer an explanation to certain overlooked aspects, notes have been added to the text of this comedy.
