Two Sides of a Coin: Do Genders Affect Human-Orangutan Interactions in Lamandau Wildlife Reserve, Central Kalimantan?

    Get PDF
Commonly, studies of human-primate interactions dwelled into general human impacts on primates. However, human gender differences might be a deeper factor to study regarding human’s perception and acceptance on primates. We investigated the influences of human gender differences on human and orangutan bi-directional receptions and analyzed the formed interactions between the two, located in Lamandau Wildlife Reserve, Central Kalimantan.  We conducted interviews with 30 locals by using snowball and convenience sampling techniques, with some criteria applied. This study unveiled that orangutans displayed more promoting behaviors than inhibiting ones, suggesting that they displayed some tolerance on human’s presence around them. On the flipside, local villagers perceived orangutans differently between men and women, specifically when confronted by orangutans. We found some significant relations between human genders and orangutan behaviours, suggesting that orangutans migt view humans differently from their genders. These relations should result in correspondingly different forms of human-orangutan interactions. This study proposed a good input for designing suitable socioeconomic approaches for better orangutan conservation programs involving locals in Lamandau Wildlife Reserve

This house yard (pekarangan) research was conducted at three sites of the Way Seputih-Sekampung watershed, which are represented by the upstream (Mulyosari Village), middle (Margodadi Village), and downstream (Tejosari Village), Metro Municipality, Lampung Province from May to July 2022. The objective of this research is to analyze the yard as a productive landscape by analyzing: 1) plant composition, 2) the diversity of plant species, and 3) utilization of the yard. Surveys and questionnaires were used. The number of yards was determined by purposive sampling, totaling 30 yards belonging to members of the Women Farmers’ Group (KWT) at each location. The results showed that horizontal diversity includes ornamental, fruit, vegetable, medicinal, and starch-producing plants. Sixteen types of plants were frequently found in 46% of yards. It was found that the Shannon-Wiener species diversity decreased from upstream to downstream, that is, upstream (2.41), middle (2.33), and downstream (1.82). Although the diversity of plant species is moderate on average, communities use their yards according to their function. The community was aware of the benefits of the yard, particularly its contribution to environmental sustainability, as indicated by the assessment index for the upstream (87%), midstream (93%), and downstream (94%) sites. Thus, the yard is very useful for the community as a place for interaction during the Covid-19 pandemic. Such benefits are said to be better if landscape management is carried out in a planned and environmentally friendly manner. Prolapsed nictitating membrane gland, or "cherry eye," is a common ocular condition in dogs, characterized by protrusion of the third eyelid gland due to weakened connective tissue, often causing inflammation and infection. A 1-year-old, 11 kg male Kintamani dog presented with a persistent reddish mass protruding from the corner of the right eye for three months. Clinical examination, history, and physical findings confirmed nictitating membrane prolapse (cherry eye), with a favorable prognosis. Cherry eye occurs when the gland of the third eyelid prolapses from its normal position, forming a swollen red mass at the medial canthus. Surgical correction was performed using the Morgan\u27s pocket technique. The dog was premedicated with atropine sulfate, and anesthesia was induced using xylazine and ketamine. The prolapsed gland was repositioned between the two incision lines with gentle downward pressure and then sutured using 4-0 PGA (Assucryl®) in a simple continuous pattern. Postoperative care included antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops (Cendo Xitrol®: Neomycin Sulfate, Polymyxin B Sulfate, Dexamethasone) and oral meloxicam for analgesia. By day 13 post-surgery, the eye had fully recovered, with no signs of recurrence or complications

Biological indicators utilize animals as markers to assess water quality in specific water bodies. Among various bioindicators, benthos is widely used for evaluating river water quality due to its sensitivity to environmental changes and its tendency to remain in specific areas. This study aimed to determine the water quality status of the Jilu River. Sampling was conducted using a purposive sampling method, with macroinvertebrates collected using a grab sampler to extract sediment from the riverbed. The sediment was then sieved to isolate benthic organisms from five locations with varying characteristics: industrial area, rice fields, natural riparian zone, residential area, and educational tourism park. The Family Biotic Index (FBI) was used to analyze the benthic macroinvertebrates, identifying 11 families: Thiaridae, Tubificidae, Chironomidae, Viviparidae, Simuliidae, Philopotamidae, Baetidae, Heptageniidae, Gecarcinucoidea, Caenidae, and Coenagrionidae. The Thiaridae family dominated across all locations. Based on FBI analysis, water quality along the Jilu River ranged across three categories: good, moderate, and very poor. The findings highlight the need for effective management strategies to mitigate pollutant loads and preserve the river’s water quality.Biological indicators utilize animals as markers to assess water quality in specific water bodies.
