Helminthiasis may be caused by helminth that spends its live cycle within certain type of snail in the water, which usually penetrates human’s skin. Generally, snail-borne disease distribution highly depend on spatial distribution of suitable snail host. By controlling snail populations, it is expected to also control the helminthiasis in human population indirectly. We have done an observational research to explore the biodiversity indices of freshwater snail in water body of Sungai Papuyu Village, District of Hulu Sungai Utara - South Kalimantan. The site was chosen due to its regular basis of helminthiasis case throughout the previous years. Samplings were done twice, the first was in August 2014 and the second was in September. We collected snail samples using 1x1m quadrant along the water body of Sungai Papuyu Village. Each collection was repeated three times and transect site was separated 100m from each other. All collected snails were identified to genus level and the number of each genus was recorded for Biodiversity indices measurement. From both sampling, we have collected 276 snails from six genus. All six genus were found in the first sampling, while only four of the six genus were found in the second sampling. Biodiversity indices measurement (abundance, heterogeneity, evenness, and dominance) showed that this community was quite stable and the snails inside it were averagely diverse. Low level of dominance indicated that the chance for the snails to become intermediate host of helminthiasis was equal. Additionally, from the first sampling we found that Pila and Lymnaea were positive for cercariae, while only Lymnaea was positive in the second sampling. We also have identified that the cercariae was included in Gymnocephalous type, and Fasciola sp. was one of the species within this group of cercariae. This finding suggests that the local authority and community should be given information of the abundance of snails in their area in order to increase their awareness of cercariae prevention.

Stroke is one of non-communicable disease that causes long term disability, which can affect the quality of life among stroke survivors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between demographic characteristics, functional status and quality of life among stroke survivors. The design for this study was a descriptive design which involving 138 participants selected by simple random sampling at National Stroke Center Hospital Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Each participant was interviewed according to structured questionnaires consisting of the demographic information, stroke specific quality of life (SS-QOL), and functional status. Data were analyzed by using Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient, Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient, and Point Biserial Correlation Coefficient. A significance level was established at p < 0.05. Main results found that the stroke survivors had a good quality of life (M=3.55, SD=0.64). 43.5 % of participants were independent in activities daily living (Mdn=18.00), they were independent in mobility and transfer (Mdn=3.00). Functional status was statistically has a positive correlation with the quality of life (r=-0.670, p<0.001). However, age, gender, occupation, education, and duration of stroke were not statistically associated with the quality of life. In conclusion, independent in functional status could influence the quality of life of stroke survivors. Therefore, this study can be as a reference for nurses to promote and maintain the functional status focused on mobility and transferring to enhance the independence in activity daily living and the quality of life of stroke survivors in Bukittinggi.

The non-renewable energy usage has recently caused the energy crisis such as scarcity of petroleum due to the unbalance rate of the demand and production every year. Based on the data of BPS in 2010, 54 % of energy source in Indonesia is petroleum. The petroleum demand is 1,4 billion barrel while the supplies is only 830.000 barrel each day. And thus, couldn’t fill the nation energy necessity and caused petroleum scarcity. Based on the Ministry of Forestry data, Indonesia has large number of rubber industries. The rubber plantation reach 3,45 billion ha with the increasing production every year. The tremboso waste from the process also increases and leads to the enviromental problem since it could not be degraded easily. Therefore, this research aimed to create liquid fuel for diesel engine by utlizing tremboso to solve the petroleum scarcity problem in Indonesia. The second aim is to investigate the influence of husk-ash paddy on the liquid fuel making process. Macromolecules carbon chain in Tremboso was cracked into short chain hydrocarbon by passing through the Catalytic Cracking and Pyrolysis process using husk-ash paddy as the natural catalyst. The experiments were carried out by adding the tremboso with the husk-ash paddy (0.5-1.7 gram) in the semibatch reactor at high temperature (±400o– 600oC) with the absence of oxygen that caused tremboso being cracked into liquid, gas and solid mixture. The gas product from tremboso Catalytic Cracking and Pyrolysis process was condensed into liquid product which is Tremboso Fuel Oil. The result of liquid product was analyzed using Gas Chromatography (GC). The reaction temperature at 550oC and 1,5 gram of catalyst were found to be the optimum condition because of the high Tremboso Fuel Oil yield.

Effect of Phosphate Fertilizers on Growth and Manganese Uptake of Rubber Seedlings

    Get PDF
Since the concentrations of manganese (Mn) in soils and leaves in most rubber plantations in Thailand are higher than optimum level. To reduce Mn uptake becomes necessary. It is well known that application of phosphate (P) fertilizer is able to reduce Mn toxicity symptoms in some plants and also solve the P deficiency in acid soil. This experiment aimed to investigate the effect of P fertilizers on growth and Mn uptake in rubber. The rubber seedlings (RRIM 600) were grown in a greenhouse using completely randomized block design with 5 treatments and 5 replicates. The 5 treatments consisted of without P fertilizer (control) and 40 mg kg-1 P2O5 in the forms of diammonium phosphate (DAP), triple super phosphate (TSP), rock phosphate (RP) (as avai. P) and RP (as total P). The result showed that addition of P fertilizer increased plant growth in terms of stem diameter, leaf number, trunk height and dry weight. Both of the RP treatments gave the highest growth followed by TSP and DAP. Moreover, adding P fertilizers decreased Mn concentrations in leaf, petiole, stem, tap root and lateral root compared with the control. This finding proves that P fertilizers play an important role in rubber gown in acid soils containing low P and high Mn and reduce Mn uptake.

Pregnant women’ health during pregnancy can be maintained by self-care practices. Some factors are indicated as predictors of self-care behaviors during pregnancy. Identifying the predictors of self-care with a theoretical framework is needed to understand and to improve self-care behaviors during pregnancy. This study aimed to identify predictors of pregnant women’ self-care behaviors in Garut district. Pender’s Health Promotion Model was used as the guideline. A cross-sectional survey design was used in this study with multistage sampling technique. The data were collected using self-administrated questionnaire from 263 pregnant women during October 2014. The results showed that 76.4% pregnant women had a fair level of self-care behaviors (Mean 64.14; SD= 5.952). Factors associated with self-care behaviors were knowledge of self-care, perceived benefits of self-care, perceived self-efficacy in self-care, and social support satisfaction (r = .130, r =.27, r = .438, r = .312, respectively). Regression analysis revealed perceived self-efficacy in self-care, social support satisfaction, and knowledge of self- care were accounted for 25% of the variance in the self-care behaviors of pregnant women in Garut District. The finding suggested promoting self-care behaviors among this group by improving their self-efficacy in self-care, social support satisfaction, and knowledge of self-care.

Loanwords are very influential in language learning because learners have a tendency to pronounce or write target language’s words based on the corresponding loanwords in their first languages. For that reason, research on English loanwords in both Thai and Indonesian is a potential source for Thai and Indonesian language learning, and even English as a foreign language (EFL) learning in Thailand and Indonesia. The objective of this research is to find out the differences and similarities between English loanwords in Thai and those in Indonesian in terms of their phonological and morphological adaptation. Since not all suprasegmental features, such as tone, exist in both languages, the phonological analysis pays more attention on vowel and consonant changes. The morphological analysis on the other hand focuses on morphological changes of polymorphemic words. The data of this research were collected from previous studies and interviews with native speakers of each language. The finding shows that both Thai and Indonesian have different as well as similar processes of phonological and morphological adaptation of English loanwords.

Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM) is the latest buzz word in logistics and sometimes it is also referred to as Green Supply Chain or Green Logistics. The basic issue actually is not new, it deals with making logistics more effective only this time the primary reason quoted is not money but to safe the environment and protect the world from global warming. A sustainable supply chain involves transportation management and planning, transportation mode changes, in order to safe energy and to reduce the carbon footprint. Sustainable logistics is nothing else as applying industry best practices to result in a win- win for the environment and the logistics company. But it not only involves transportation but also warehousing where energy and resources can be optimized. Then there is another perspective that of reverse logistics and recycling to reuse and preserve resources. A sustainable supply chain starts with accurate demand forecasting and planning, the better job one does in accurately forecasting the more efficient is the supply chain and logistics information systems (LIS) play an important in it. But how are the global industry best practices applied in an ASEAN context? What transportation mode and route is selected and what type of equipment is being used? What are the storage and distribution networks? What type of packaging and material handling is being used? What are the labour and environmental rules and regulations? This quantitative web- enabled research study looked at the perception of logistics management students at a Thai university in relation to sustainable supply chain in an ASEAN context. The findings proofed the underlying theories and industry best practices and placed them in the Thai context. It is recommended to follow up this pilot study with a large scale comparative study of ASEAN countries.
