    Water bugs (Heteroptera) in the catchment area of River Sitnica (Serbia)

    This paper includes the first study of the distribution of Heteroptera in the ecologically highly threatened catchment area of Sitnica River. It is the only recipient for large amounts of waste water which alter its ecological characteristics. There were 12 species of aquatic and semiaquatic bugs recorded in 88 samples: Nepa cinerea Linnaeus, Corixa punctata (Illiger), Sigara (Pseudovermicorixa) nigrolineata (Fieber), Sigara (Retrocorixa) limitata (Fieber), Sigara (Sigara) striata (Linnaeus), Sigara (Subsigara) iactans Jansson, Sigara (Vermicorixa) lateralis (Leach), Notonecta (Notonecta) glauca Linnaeus, Notonecta (Notonecta) viridis Delcourt, Aphelocheirus (Aphelocheirus) aestivalis (Fabricius), Mesovelia furcata Mulsant & Rey, Velia (Plesiovelia) caprai Tamanini. Sigara (Subsigara) iactans is a new species for Serbian fauna.     NOTE ON THE FAUNA OF DROSOPHILA (DIPTERA: DROSOPHILIDAE) AND THE FIRST RECORD OF OPOMYZA FLORUM (DIPTERA: OPOMYZIDAE) FROM MT. GOČ, SERBIA

    Fauna of Drosophilidae in Serbia has been studied for 40 years. This paper presents the results of faunistic research conducted on Mt. Goč in June 2011 in two forests (beech and oak), which are significantly different in the type of vegetation and microclimatic factors. In the oak forest eight species of Drosophila were registered, while in the beech forest only five species were recorded. A relatively small number of species recorded is, among other things, the result of extremely bad weather conditions during the collection attempts. An interesting non-drosophilid fly was also found in the sample - Opomyza florum Fabricius, 1794 (Diptera: Opomyzidae). Since there is very little data concerning the distribution of O. florum in Serbia, this paper is an invitation to entomologists to further study this species, including faunistical, ecological and behavioral aspects, keeping in mind its potential economic impac

    NEW DATA ON THE CARABID BEETLES (COLEOPTERA: CARABIDAE) OF MT. FRUŠKA GORA (NORTHERN SERBIA)

    Adult carabid beetles were collected from the territory of Mt. Fruška Gora (Northern Serbia) over the period 2002-2008. The investigations were performed at 26 localities. During the study altogether 219 specimens were captured. These beetles were collected mostly by hand, but some individuals were caught by pitfall and light traps as well. In total 64 species classified into 33 genera, 16 tribes, and six subfamilies were found.  Agonum monachum (Duftschmid, 1812) is a new species for the fauna of Serbia. Twenty-seven species are recorded for the first time for Mt. Fruška Gora. The presence of the tribe Perigonini, genus Perigona Laporte, 1835 and subgenus Trechicus LeConte, 1853 is registered in Northern Serbia for the first time in this study. The species Ophonus (Metophonus) cordatus (Duftschmid, 1812), Acupalpus (Acupalpus) flavicollis (Sturm, 1825), Stenolophus (Stenolophus) skrimshiranus Stephens, 1828, Dromius (Dromius) quadrimaculatus (Linnaeus, 1758), Perigona (Trechicus) nigriceps (Dejean, 1831), Agonum monachum, and Pterostichus (Phonias) ovoideus (Sturm, 1824) were found in Vojvodina Province for the first time. The findings of the species Chlaenius (Chlaeniellus) tristis (Schaller, 1783), Ophonus (Hesperophonus) azureus (Fabricius, 1775), and Ophonus (Metophonus) puncticeps Stephens, 1828 are the first precise ones for the species for the territory of Vojvodina Province. After the present study the carabid fauna of Mt. Fruška Gora currently comprises 184 species. 

    STATUS OF THE POTENTIALLY INVASIVE ASIAN SPECIES SCELIPHRON DEFORME IN EUROPE, AND AN UPDATE ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF S. CURVATUM (HYMENOPTERA: SPHECIDAE)

    We reviewed the distribution of the two Asian species of the genus Sceliphron Klug, introduced into Europe in the late 1970s to early 1980s: S. (Hensenia) curvatum (Smith) and S. (Hensenia) deforme (Smith). Both species are routinely considered as invasive in Europe, but the status and effects of their (eventual) invasiveness are yet to be documented and evaluated. We had a focus on two areas, the Balkan Peninsula and European Russia, based principally on the study of specimens collected over the last 15 years, but we also reviewed the extensive published evidence (including some very important internet-based records), and for S. curvatum we provided a concise overview of the entire European range. We confirmed that the latter recorded species, S. deforme, has been introduced into Europe at least twice, first in the central part of European Russia, and then in the SW Balkans, and we established that these introductions originated from different source populations, belonging to a geographically widely separated Asian subspecies. Based on the most recent evidence, we confirmed successful establishment of S. deforme in both areas, and documented its ongoing spreading: from central European Russia southwards/southeastwards, and most probably from the Balkans eastwards. We rectified several erroneous country records for S. deforme (France, Italy, Bulgaria, Greece, “central Europe”), which have been extensively perpetuated in several important publications about the invasive species in Europe in the last three years (n.b. – for Greece, we have positively documented its presence only now). For S. curvatum, we added a new country record (Georgia/Abkhazia), and provided a few important earlier records from the Balkans (Serbia, Greece, Croatia, Bulgaria), which shift the timing of the previously published “first appearance” dates in the area (for two years for N Serbia and C Greece), or otherwise modify the knowledge of its history of spread. Since the most recent evidence suggests the rapid eastward advancing of both introduced species towards their respective westernmost/northernmost native range limits in western to central Asia, we considered it important to briefly review the state of knowledge about their possible coexistence in that area. We also provided detailed maps of their allochtonous ranges in Europe (currently exceeding the longitudinal span of 4,000 km) and westernmost part of their native ranges in Asia. Finally, we very briefly commented on some ecological aspects of their existence within the allochtonous range (parasitism, sex ratio, phenology)

    THE GROUND BEETLES (COLEOPTERA: CARABIDAE) OF THE ZASAVICA SPECIAL NATURE RESERVE (SERBIA)

    Adults of ground beetles were collected in the Zasavica Special Nature Reserve (Serbia) from 1996-2010 at 34 localities. Altogether 211 carabid specimens were caught during this period. The carabids were collected predominantly by hand, but a certain number of these beetles were captured by Barber pitfall traps. A total of 72 species and 13 subspecies from 25 genera, 50 subgenera, 15 tribes and six subfamilies were registered. The richest subfamilies according to the number of species are Harpalinae (47 species) and Carabinae (15 species). The highest number of species is found within the tribes Carabini and Harpalini (each with 14 species), while a somewhat lower number is registered in the tribe Pterostichini (13 species). Among the genera, Carabus Linnaeus (with 12 species), Harpalus Latreille (with nine species) and Pterostichus Bonelli (with seven species) are represented by the highest number of species.  One species new for the Serbian fauna is recorded – Pterostichus (Bothriopterus) quadrifoveolatus Letzner. The finding of three species and three subspecies are the second new ones for the Serbian territory. Six species and one subspecies are registered for the first time in the province of Vojvodina. Eighteen species and six subspecies of ground beetles are cited as new for western Serbia. Seventy-one species are recorded for the first time for the Zasavica Special Naturе Reserve. Two species and two subspecies are protected both nationally and internationally. The fauna of ground beetles of border areas of the province of Vojvodina (especially the southern borders) and northwestern parts of Serbia is insufficiently studied so far. Only after future investigations and the discovery of additional new species for the region will the real state of diversity of this group in the area be known

    PRELIMINARY NOTES ON THE SPIDER FAUNA (ARACHNIDA, ARANEAE) OF THE SPECIAL NATURE RESERVE ZASAVICA

    Based on literature data and preliminary investigations a total of 104 spider species can be recorded from the Special Nature Reserve (SNR) Zasavica. Five species, Cyclosa oculata (Walckenaer, 1802), Mendoza canestrinii (Ninni, 1868), Philodromus albidus Kulczynski, 1911, Heriaeus graminicola (Doleschall, 1852) and Sibianor aurocinctus (Ohlert, 1865), were not recorded in Serbia until the present study. The rediscovery of the species Dolomedes plantarius (Clerck, 1757), Cresmatoneta mutinensis (Canestrini, 1868), Hypsosinga heri (Hahn, 1831) and Argyroneta aquatica (Clerck, 1757) represents an important result that could possibly be used as a guideline for future faunistic and ecological studies with the purpose of successful protection and conservation measures in the SNR Zasavic

    FIRST STUDY OF THE BUTTERFLIES (LEPIDOPTERA: PAPILIONOIDEA) OF MT. MUČANJ

    Mučanj is a mountain located in western Serbia, surrounded by three rivers: the Grabovica, Presečka reka and Veliki Rzav. The nearest mountains are Javor and Golija and the closest town is Ivanjica. In entomological terms it is virtually unexplored. The authors visited it on several occasions from 2008 to 2011 and provide here a first overview of its butterfly fauna. During this period a total number of 111 species was recorded – Hesperiidae 14, Papilionidae 3, Pieridae 12, Riodinidae 1, Lycaenidae 30, Nymphalidae 51. This number will certainly increase with future studies, but even now proves this mountain has exceptional butterfly diversity. Among the species discovered, Colias caucasica Staudinger, 1871 requires special attention, for it was previously known in Serbia only from Mt. Kopaonik. Important populations of some rare butterflies were found, like Coenonympha orientalis Rebel 1910 and Polyommatus eros (Ochsenheimer 1808)
