    Identification of Misconceptions through Multiple Choice Tasks at Municipal Chemistry Competition Test

    In this paper, the level of conceptual understanding of chemical contents among seventh grade students who participated in the municipal Chemistry competition in Novi Sad, Serbia, in 2013 have been examined. Tests for the municipal chemistry competition were used as a measuring instrument, wherein only multiple choice tasks were considered and analyzed. Determination of the level of conceptual understanding of the tested chemical contents was based on the calculation of the frequency of choosing the correct answers. Thereby, identification of areas of satisfactory conceptual understanding, areas of roughly adequate performance, areas of inadequate performance, and areas of quite inadequate performance have been conducted. On the other hand, the analysis of misconceptions was based on the analysis of distractors. The results showed that satisfactory level of conceptual understanding and roughly adequate performance characterize majority of contents, which was expected since only the best students who took part in the contest were surveyed. However, this analysis identified a large number of misunderstandings, as well. In most of the cases, these misconceptions were related to the inability to distinguish elements, compounds, homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures. Besides, it is shown that students are not familiar with crystal structure of the diamond, and with metric prefixes. The obtained results indicate insufficient visualization of the submicroscopic level in school textbooks, the imprecise use of chemical language by teachers and imprecise use of language in chemistry textbooks

    Effects of the Know-Want-Learn Strategy on Primary School Students’ Metacognition and Physics Achievement

    This study is aimed at examining the effects of the Know-Want-Learn (KWL) strategy on primary school students’ metacognition and physics achievement. A pre-test – post-test control group design was used, where the treatment was the implementation of the KWL strategy. A physics knowledge test and a questionnaire about metacognition were administered to sixth-grade primary school students of both genders. The results obtained were treated statistically, using descriptive statistics and a paired-samples t-test, as well as an independent samples t-test. The analysis of the results obtained showed that for both  variables (physics achievement and metacognition): (1) there was no significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores for the group  of students who had been taught traditionally, (2) there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores for the group  of students who had been taught by the use of KWL strategy and (3) there was a significant difference in the post-test scores between the group  of students who had been taught traditionally and the group  of students who had been taught by the use of the KWL strategy. Important insights about the effects of the KWL strategy in learning physics have been generated

    Modeling the Geography Class through Problem-Based Teaching: a Case Study from Novi Sad, Serbia

    The idea of problem-based teaching, i.e. learning through solving problems, is not a new one, but has been fairly neglected in the teaching process. The aim of this research is to consider the possibility of applying this learning model in teaching geography in primary and grammar schools. This teaching model was proposed for the presentation of the teaching unit Australia and Oceania, in the framework of the thematic unit Political/Geographic, Demographic and Economic/Geographic Features of Certain Parts of the World. The model implies group work. The expected successful outcome of the applied teaching model has been verified by the results of a survey and the scores achieved in the knowledge test. The study contains the entire course of the experimental teaching of the unit Australia and Oceania by applying problem-based teaching, and presents and analyzes the results achieved. The classes were modelled by relying on Hill-Slater′s model. A t-test was used for the statistical analysis of data in order to test the hypothesis on differences in the arithmetic mean. The choice and application of the statistical mathematical procedure are determined by the nature of the phenomenon which is the subject of this research. The software packages Mathematica and Excel were used in order to statistically analyze data and to draw tables and graphs

    Butterflies of the Vlasina region in Southeast Serbia (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea)

     Although the Vlasina plateau has proved to be an interesting area hosting diverse and unique flora and fauna, itsbutterflies have not been thoroughly studied. Consolidating several known records and our field observations, a total of101 butterfly species were listed for this region. The area hosts a number of important species to be conserved underNatura 2000 and Emerald networks and a significant number of nationally important species. The most interesting recordis Colias caucasica, a butterfly not yet recorded in the neighboring region, and its finding is described here in more detail

    The present contribution is based upon ichneumonids collected from the northeastern part of Turkey (Bayburt, Erzurum and Kars) in 2007-2009. A total of 7 species belonging to the subfamilies Anomaloninae, Campopleginae, Cremastinae, Cryptinae, Ctenopelmatinae and Tryphoninae have been identified. Among them, Chirotica insignis (Gravenhorst, 1829) is a new record for Turkish fauna. Anomalon cruentatum (Geoffroy, 1785) and Netelia (Netelia) dilatata (Thomson, 1888) are very common in the study area. New data on the distribution of 6 known species are presented. Additionally, a short zoogeographical characterization is given for each of the species

    DISTRIBUTION DATA FOR THE TRIBES CERATININI AND ALLODAPINI (HYMENOPTERA: APIDAE) WITH A CHECKLIST OF THE SUBFAMILY XYLOCOPINAE OF TURKEY

    The present study is based on bee samples collected in various parts of Turkey since the 1970s. Examination of the material and an overview of the literature sources allowed us to reach the conclusion that the genus Ceratina Latreille (Ceratinini) includes 27 species and two subspecies, while only one species of the genus Exoneuridia Cockerell (Allodapini) is found in Turkey. With a current 10 Xylocopa species previously recorded, a total of 38 species and two subspecies in the subfamily Xylocopinae occur in the country. Each species has a different distribution range; some Ceratina species are abundantly or moderately distributed, but certain species are very rare: C. christellae has been known from Antalya and Hakkâri, C. hakkarica from Hakkâri, C. neocallosa from Nevşehir, C. rasmonti from Ağrı and Van, C. warnckei from Hakkâri, Kahramanmaraş and Şırnak, C. schwarziana from Hakkâri and Kars. Ceratina chalcites ebmeri, C. denesi, C. hakkarica, C. rasmonti, C. warnckei and Exoneuridia hakkariensis are Anatolian endemics. Moreover, 12 Ceratina taxa and E. hakkariensis have been described from Turkey, of which six taxa have type localities in Hakkâri (C. hakkarica, C. schwarziana, C. warnckei, C. zwakhalsi, C. chalcites ebmeri and E. hakkariensis). Thus, the eastern part of Turkey, especially Hakkâri, is a very important speciation center for Ceratinini bees. For most of the species, new distribution records are provided, and plant species visited and nesting sites are included. It was first determined that C. bispinosa and E. hakkariensis visited Capsicum annuum L., which is the most common and extensively cultivated vegetable in Turkey. For rare taxa, a distribution map was established. Furthermore, a checklist for the Turkish Xylocopinae is provided for the first time

    The Application of Context-Based Teaching in the Realization of the Program Content “The Decline of Pollinators”

    This paper analyzes the efficiency of context-based teaching in the realization of the program content: "The Decline of Pollinators." The aim of context-based biology teaching is to connect biology contents with everyday life. The application of knowledge in everyday situations is encouraged so as to develop the skills that deepen one’s knowledge and make it less abstract.The task of the experimental study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the application of context-based teaching vs. conventional expository teaching in the implementation of the teaching content. In order to accomplish the tasks of this paper, a model of a pedagogical experiment with parallel groups [experimental (E) and control (C)] was applied. The teaching content „The Decline of Pollinators" was presented to Group E by using a text based on newspaper articles and the real-life context provided by those articles. In Group C, the same content was presented through conventional expository instruction, which is the traditional lecturing model. The results showed a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups in the number of points scored in the post-test evaluation of knowledge. The difference was observed based on individual ranks and a test as a whole, in favour of the experimental group. In terms of the quantity and quality of knowledge acquired by the students in the tested teaching field, the experimental didactic model of context-based teaching proved to be more effective
