    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to analyze the absenteeism rates and costs of healthcare workers who had contact with or tested positive for COVID-19 disease in terms of age, gender, marital status, infection status and title. METHODS: In the study, absence data of personals who took sick leave due to COVID-19 at a university hospital were examined. In the data analysis, frequencies, percentages and absenteeism rates were calculated and multivariate hierarchical regression analysis was performed. Regression analysis was conducted in two separate periods, before and after vaccination to determine the effect of vaccination. RESULTS: It has been determined that 45.59% of healthcare workers are absent due to COVID-19. The absenteeism rate due to COVID-19 was found to be 0.83. Age, infection status and title variables explain 50% of the cost of absenteeism in the pre-vaccination period and 37% in the post-vaccination period. CONCLUSIONS: Among healthcare workers, the COVID-19 pandemic has been a major cause of absenteeism and associated costs. The results are important in determining occupational health and safety and human resources policies in possible future outbreaks

Background: Intravitreal injection (IVI) is a common practice in today's ophthalmology clinics. The pain that patients will experience after the application may be important in compliance with the treatment. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between various clinical characteristics of patients receiving IVI and corresponding visual analogue scale (VAS) scores (0: no pain to 10: severe pain). Design: Single-centre, Prospective study. Methods: A total of 313 participants (168 females, 145 males) with a mean age of 66.91 +/- 9.67 years underwent IVI for diabetic retinopathy (DRP), retinal vein occlusion (RVO), or age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Eye examinations, including visual acuity and intraocular pressure measurements, were also conducted, and injection indications were determined based on dilated fundus examinations and spectral domain optical coherence tomography images. Following the injections, the researchers solicited VAS scores ranging from 0 to 10 (no pain to severe pain). The study explored the relationships between clinical characteristics, headache frequency, joint and muscle pain, analgesic use, surgical history, antidepressant use, vasovagal syncope, previous injections, and VAS score. Results: The mean VAS score was 4.77 +/- 2.90. While DRP and RVO had similar VAS scores (4.95 +/- 2.98 and 5.22 +/- 2.70, respectively), the AMD group had significantly lower scores (4.09 +/- 2.64). Compared with nonusers, antidepressant users had significantly greater VAS scores (5.79 +/- 3.43) (4.52 +/- 2.70) (p < 0.05). Patients with a history of syncope had significantly greater VAS scores (p < 0.05). In patients reporting monthly headaches, a positive correlation was found between headache frequency and VAS score (r = 0.23, p < 0.01). Conclusion: For individuals experiencing daily headaches, inquiries about vasovagal syncope and antidepressant use may be beneficial, considering the potential association of these symptoms with higher VAS scores after IVIs

    Get PDF
Hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) cultivation, a cornerstone of Turkey's fruit production and exports, faces mounting challenges due to climate change. This study analyzes the effects of climatic variables and soil properties on hazelnut yield in two key Turkish regions-Eastern Black Sea and D & uuml;zce-by combining 20 years of agronomic data with machine learning techniques. Yield predictions under different Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) climate scenarios were generated using Random Forest and Gradient Boosting models, achieving high predictive performance (R-2 > 0.90). Results show that low-emission scenarios (SSP1-1.9) foster favorable growing conditions, while high-emission scenarios (SSP5-8.5) lead to significant yield reductions (up to 17%), mainly due to increased humidity-induced fungal risk and frost events. Soil properties such as organic matter content and water-holding capacity also played critical roles in determining yield variability. The study highlights the potential of AI-driven climate modeling to guide adaptive cultivation practices, such as frost-resistant cultivars and humidity control strategies, ensuring sustainable hazelnut production in the face of future climate uncertainties

    Get PDF
The need for efficient and sustainable logistics solutions has been highlighted as the rapid growth of global trade places extraordinary pressure on port systems. The concept of 'smart-ports' has emerged to leverage technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and big data analytics to enhance port performance as traditional port operations face challenges such as congestion, resource inefficiency, and environmental concerns. However, various political, economic, technological, social, and environmental barriers prevent the successful implementation of smart ports. This study addresses this gap by focusing on the barriers to developing smart ports, using a strategic framework to prioritise solutions. It contributes to the literature by proposing a hybrid decision-making approach that integrates PESTEL, Stepwise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA), and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) under fuzzy logic for the first time in the context of smart ports. The study provides a comprehensive roadmap for policymakers and stakeholders to navigate the complexities of smart port implementations successfully. Findings suggest that comprehensive stakeholder engagement for digitalisation, and collaborative governance and regulatory streamlining for smart port development are the most promising strategies

Introduction: Effective handover skills play a crucial role in communication between pre-hospital and hospital staff. However, nursing and paramedic students rarely have the opportunity to practice them. Objective: Our study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Situation-Background-AssessmentRecommendation (SBAR) method in emergency settings using simulation-based education for nursing and paramedic students. Methods: We conducted a single-group quasi-experimental study involving 39 nursing and 42 paramedic students. The students' patient handover skills were evaluated through simulation-based training using a structured handover method. Data were collected using the Personal Data Form, Patient Handover Information Form, Patient Handover Skill Evaluation Form, and Video Observation and Evaluation Form. For data analysis, we used the Mann-Whitney U test, the Friedman test, the Cohen's kappa coefficient, and the Pearson correlation test. Results: The knowledge scores of nursing (N) and paramedic (P) students (N: 16 [11-20]; P: 15 [10-19] pretraining) increased post-training (N: 18 [15-20]; P: 18 [10-21]), post-simulation (N: 18 [14-21]; P: 17 [13-20]), and one-month after the post-simulation (N: 18 [14-21]; P: 17 [14-20]). The group participants, 50%, received scores between 12.50 and 16.25 and acquired medium handover skills. Conclusion: We found that theoretical education and simulation-based applications were effective in enhancing students' knowledge level of handover processes, which are critical for patient safety, and that simulation supported their learning. It is recommended that patient handover training be conducted using simulation-based methods with different student groups, integrated into educational curricula, and updated regularly

Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) is defined as an approach that integrates environmentally friendly policies, systems, and practices into an organization's human resources processes. Work engagement, on the other hand, refers to an employee's emotional, cognitive, and behavioral connection to their work and organization. This study aims to establish a conceptual framework for the relationship between green human resource management practices and work engagement. The research data were collected using a survey technique. Since the exact number of individuals in the population could not be determined, the population was considered undefined, and a convenience sampling method was employed. Analyses were conducted on a sample consisting of 222 people. The findings indicate that green human resource management practices positively and statistically significantly influence work engagement levels, playing a crucial role in enhancing employee engagement. Analyses revealed that male employees adopt green occupational health and safety practices more readily and demonstrate higher levels of energy and commitment to their work. Work engagement tends to increase with age. Marital status was found to have no effect on engagement levels, while higher education levels correlate with more positive perceptions of green human resource management practices and increased work engagement. Sectoral differences significantly impact both green human resource management practices and work engagement. Engagement levels rise with longer tenure, and managers exhibit greater sensitivity to environmental issues, participate more actively in green initiatives, and demonstrate higher energy and commitment to their work

The effect of peripheral dopamine on fracture healing: an experimental study in a rat model

    Get PDF
BackgroundDopamine is a versatile biomolecule that functions as a neurotransmitter, hormone, and immune modulator in the body. Although some anabolic effects of dopamine on bone tissue have been described in the literature, its influence on the complex processes involved in fracture healing remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dopamine on bone healing at the peripheral level.MethodsThirty-six male Wistar albino rats were randomly assigned to two groups: a control group with no treatment and a dopamine group that received 12 mg/kg levodopa twice daily via oral gavage following surgery. A standardized femoral fracture was induced under anesthesia in all the rats, which were then fixed with an intramedullary Kirschner wire. Each group consisted of 18 rats, and six rats from each group were randomly sacrificed on postoperative days 15, 30, and 45. The harvested femurs were first evaluated radiologically, followed by biomechanical analysis via a three-point bending test, and finally subjected to histopathological examination.ResultsNo significant differences were observed between the groups on days 15 and 30. However, on day 45, histopathological scores were significantly lower in the dopamine group (p = 0.015), and biomechanical strength was also lower (p = 0.004). Radiological scores were not significantly different between the groups at any time point.ConclusionDespite the known anabolic effects of dopamine on bone cells, it may adversely affect fracture healing. The negative impact of dopamine on bone union could be attributed to the multifactorial and complex nature of fracture healing, the dynamics of inflammatory processes, and the cumulative effects of various dopamine receptor subtypes.Duezce University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit under the Health Sciences Research Project Program (SBAP) [2024.04.02.1513]This research was supported by Duezce University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit under the Health Sciences Research Project Program (SBAP) (Project No: 2024.04.02.1513)

The world's energy needs have become important in the last decades. However, energy consumption in developed countries is increasing every year. Around 40% of the world's energy consumption comes from buildings. The majority of this rate is due to the energy consumed by heating, cooling, and air conditioning systems. Many detailed studies have been conducted on energy efficiency in these systems where energy consumption is so high. Small improvements in these systems would lead to large energy savings on a global scale. When heating, cooling, and air conditioning systems are examined in detail, compressors consume the largest energy consumption. Interventions that affect compressor performance will yield results that are more positive. The performances of mono and binary nanolubricants acquired from various nanoparticles (Al2O3, SiO2, and B) used in different fractions (0.5 mass% and 1 mass%) in the vapor compression refrigeration system (VCRS) were evaluated in this study. As a result, a 14.81% increase in the COP of the system was obtained in 1 mass% Al2O3-SiO2 binary nanolubricant compared to POE. The compressor's energy consumption in the experimental system decreased by 19.53% with 1 mass% Al2O3-SiO2 binary nanolubricant referred to POE. An improvement of 13.58% was achieved in 1 mass% Al2O3-SiO2 binary nanolubricant when the exergy efficiency of the VCRS was referred with POE. The best exergoeconomic performance was seen in 1% Al2O3-SiO2 binary nanolubricant with 13.22% increase compared to POE. The best environmental performance was acquired with 19.53% reduction in 1 mass% Al2O3-SiO2 binary nanolubricant. Consequently, the binary nanoparticle positively affects the VCRS performance in many aspects.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye (TUBITAK)Open access funding provided by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye (TUBITAK).
