Implementing a NP Led Education Program to Reduce Vaccine Hesitancy in Primary Care

    No full text
The purpose of this evidence-based proposal (EBP) was to implement a practice setting change that would decrease vaccine hesitancy and vaccine refusal rates in the primary care setting. The PICOT question guiding this project is: Among unvaccinated adults ages18 and older seeking healthcare in the primary care setting, what is the impact of an NP led vaccine education program compared to current practice (no education) on vaccination hesitancy and vaccine uptake over a 90-day period. The project will utilize an NP led vaccine education program to demonstrate a decrease in vaccine hesitancy and increase in vaccine uptake in the primary care setting. Evidence-based interventions for the project that would be instituted are formal vaccine education for healthcare providers (HCPs) working within the clinic, followed by face-to-face provider to patient education during the office visit. Degree of vaccine hesitancy pre and post intervention will be assessed by utilizing a survey tool. All adults ages 18 and older seeking primary care at Evergreen Health Clinic will be part of 90-day project intervention. Vaccine hesitancy and uptake is the desired outcome of interest. Vaccine hesitancy will be assessed for change by a pre and post survey. Vaccine uptake and will be assessed for change in the immunization status section of the electronic medical record

Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Prevention and Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis

    No full text
Atopic Dermatitis is a chronic condition which causes itchy and sometimes painful rashes and patches of dry skin known as flares. These flares can result in physical discomfort and decreased emotional wellbeing related to low self-esteem and self-consciousness. As a recurrent skin disease with no current cure, the need for research in different methods of treatment modalities is warranted to decrease the number and severity of flares of those diagnosed with Atopic Dermatitis. This evidenced based practice proposal explores methods of prevention and treatment of Atopic Dermatitis through the usage of complementary medicine methods including acupuncture, balneotherapy, probiotics, herbal remedies, yoga and mindfulness

Collaborating to Build a Successful Interdisciplinary, Community-Based Project

    No full text
This article presents three strategies for creating interdisciplinary, community-based projects: co-create the project with all participants, set flexible, action-based goals, and collaborate to better prepare students. Building strong community partnerships and using the strengths of humanities and professional disciplines can improve impact, teaching, and learning

Professional Values in Undergraduate Nursing Students: Comparison in Different Cultures

    No full text
Background: Ethical values are the foundation of nursing practice, while social values are able to characterize cultural groups and societies may also have an influence in the definition of a professional behavior. Which makes it possible to presume that different cultures might also have different professional values. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the attainment of professional values in undergraduate nursing students in different cultures and compare the professional values per semester. Design: Cross-sectional, quantitative, descriptive study. Sample consisted of 210 undergraduate nursing students in Brazil and 33 in the USA. Results: The main scores of NPVS-3 of Brazilian students were higher than students from USA (124.96±11.58 and 112.85±11.16 for the USA). In both countries, the “Caring” dimension was the highest, the mean score NPVS-3 of the Brazilian students 46.83±3.67 and USA 45.00±3.37. Ethics in nursing practice and humanization of care were identified as extremely important in the support of the work process of nursing. Conclusion: It is concluded that the values identified as the most relevant point to care are linked to respect, dignity, and patient protection

The Effects of Roundup™ on Benthic Microbial Assemblages

Given the wide usage of Roundup, a common herbicide, the impacts of its presence in ecological communities are of great interest. Many studies have investigated the effects of glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, on different factions of an ecosystem including on animals, plants, microorganisms, and nutrients. The current study expanded upon these works using Roundup instead of glyphosate to provide a realistic application in which to observe the development of microbial assemblages and nutrient composition in two different habitats. Winogradsky columns were prepared using benthic material from a ditch and a pond. Varying concentrations of Roundup were introduced to the columns at the beginning of the study and microbial growth and nutrient compositions from each column were measured weekly. The results indicate that the presence of Roundup has varying effects on microorganisms and nutrients. While photosynthetic microbes were negatively impacted, a shift in the microbial composition to heterotrophic microbes indicates that these microorganisms were able to utilize some ingredients in Roundup as a nutrient source. Additionally, the temporal analysis of nutrient compositions indicated that microbes metabolize glyphosate starting with the phosphate moiety even when the other compounds in Roundup are present. While these trends were observed in both benthic habitats, the composition of the ecological community can affect its ability to utilize the ingredients in Roundup as a nutrient sourc
