A contrastive study of metadiscourse in English and Arabic linguistics research articles
The present paper analyzes metadiscourse expressions to understand the cultural differences between English and Arabic-speaking researchers. It uses a contrastive corpus of seventy discussion sections of linguistics research articles written by native speakers of English and Arabic. Within metadiscourse there appear to be two types: interactive and interactional. Chi-square tests are carried out to clarify the probable differences between both groups. The present paper analyzes metadiscourse expressions to understand the cultural differences between English and Arabic-speaking researchers. The article is dedicated to the widespread use of transformed proverbs in newspaper headlines, the effect of their occasional actualization on the basis of substitution and infringement of their usual compatibility. The principle role played by such proverbs is to attract the readers’ attention to a particular issue or problem and to attach a special (often ironic) summation to the author’s message or the point of view. The article is dedicated to the widespread use of transformed proverbs in newspaper headlines, the effect of their occasional actualization on the basis of substitution and infringement of their usual compatibility. Ассеманиев кодекс в контексте истории первого славянского перевода евангелия
The author points to the crucial role of the Codex Assemanianus in resolving the fundamental problem of Cyrillo-Methodian translation of the Gospels. The textological analysis of some readings reveals a deep understanding of the complexities of Greek Gospels and of its Semitic background. It also implies a certain exegetical independence of the Slavic version
The problem of nominative-ergative transitions
The paper addresses a repeatedly discussed question in alignment system typology, namely whether there are processes that turn full-fledged nominative constructions into ergative or vice versa. On the basis of his historical-typological theory of sentence pattern evolution, schematogony, the author strives for a deeper understanding of the historical relations between the two alignment patterns, taking the tripartite and active alignments into consideration as well. He arrives at a conclusion that an indirect shift from ergative to nominative is nearly excluded, while the opposite is only possible in cases of the initial construction’s predicate being a participle rather than a finite verb. Indeed, it is the (proto)active pattern that can be shown to be the common predecessor of both nominative and ergative constructions (yielding their indirect relationship) and, although the ergative pattern is more conservative, the two construction types addressed emerged independently of each other. The paper addresses a repeatedly discussed question in alignment system typology, namely whether there are processes that turn full-fledged nominative constructions into ergative or vice versa.
