Vowels and sonorant consonants constitute the vocal-sonorant structure of the sound picture of any language. We take into consideration the basic features of sound classes and groups. The basic one is the frequency of occurrence of vowels and sonorant consonants in the speech chain. The sum-total of the vowels and sonorant consonants make up the melodicity of a language. It is also possible to call this vocal-sonorant quotient. Melodicity, i.e., the sum-total of vowels and sonorant consonants, should be considered a language universal

According to such scholars as G.A.Klimov and W.P.Lehmann, the early Proto-Indo-European belonged to the languages of the active-stative typology or had some relics of this morphosyntactic type. In the languages like Russian, which have preserved their synthetic means of expression, the residues of the active-stative typology are still evident. In the article it is argued that in case of Russian some of these residues were «refrigerated» due to the influence of the Finno-Ugric substratum («refrigerator effect»)

The Russian linguist V.Šercl (1843-1906) is known, on the one hand, as the author of various papers on the formal aspects of language (as, for instance, Comparative Grammar of Slavic and Other Cognate Languages, 1871-1873) and, on the other hand, as a semasiologist (see, for example, his work on enantiosemy, 1884). It is the latter area of Šercl’s activity that requires closer attention. The article focuses on Šercl’s works On Concreteness in Language (1884) and Basic Elements of Language and Principles of its Development (1885-1889)

In the practice of teaching any language as a foreign language, pronunciation as a part of the educational process plays an important role in defining quality of mastery of a nonnative language. The listener can learn to speak and write competently, not making, in an ideal case, any grammatical or stylistic mistakes; but if the pronunciation «limps» acquired knowledge comes to naught regarding realization of linguistic skills in the oral form of speech; the same can be said of studying Russian. For this reason the present article is devoted to the qualitative sign structure of phonetic transcription as one of the factors in forming correct pronunciation
