Differential approach and capabilities: An analysis for the population displaced in Colombia
Get PDFAbstracto. The conceptual framework of the capability approach proposed by Amartya Sen has never been used specifically in the dynamics of forced displacement or in the analysis of the quality of life of the population victims of the Colombian armed conflict. Reason why, this article affirms that the approach of capabilities agrees with the differential approach proposed by the Colombian Constitutional Court. Consequently, the objective is to provide a conceptual aproximation to the capability approach of Amartya Sen and differential approach proposed by the from Colombia Constitutional Court and to point out that the capability approach is relevant in the design, implementation and evaluation of public policies directed at the victim population. Similarly, recent data on the dynamics of forced displacement in the city of Bucaramanga (Colombia) are provided. Palabras clave. Career strategies of employees of MNC in the globalization reign
Get PDFAbstract. The paper analyses the pattern of career choice among the fresh recruits in multinational corporations. The paper finds that competence skills that are required within a borderless corporation tend to positively influence the employee satisfaction and expectation at the early stages of his/her career. The work environment prevalent at such peculiar and dominant corporations usually exceeds developing country corporate practices that are common within a local market landscape. Does Social Capital Have an Effect on Industry Production in G7 Countries? Causality Analysis
Get PDFAbstract. The relationship between social capital and economic growth has become an attractive research area in the literature recently. In this context, this paper examines the relationship between social capital indicators and industry production in the period of 2006-2014 with monthly data for the G7 countries. For empirical analysis, panel causality analysis method developed by Dumitrescu & Hurlin (2012) was used. Results indicate that there is a bidirectional relationship between social capital indicators and industry production. These findings support feedback hypothesis in the context of social capital and economic growth in the G7 countries.Keywords. Can micro credit schemes be introduced by formal banking sector?
Get PDFAbstract.The paper explains the supply side dynamics of micro credit that is about the sustainability of Micro Finance Institutions. The study suggests that formal banking sector framework should be applied to micro credit schemes to analyse their efficiency. This may help us provide a methodology unconventional to micro credit literature that can provide guidelines for successful micro credit endeavors by formal financial institutions.Keywords. Migration-driven women’s empowerment: The case of Turkey
Get PDFAbstract. This paper addresses the effect of migration on women’s empowerment in Turkey. Utilization of data over six decades from 1960 until 2011 gives the possibility that these series can be spuriously correlated. This study, therefore, adopts the bounds testing procedure as a method to determine and to avoid spurious correlation. The results of bounds testing gives clear-cut evidence that women’s empowerment, the share of women in parliament in the present context, is related to the emigration rate, the relative education of women and to a measure of democracy. It is also found that the share of women in parliament is related to the country groups with the largest effect in European and core OECD countries. The results are robust for the inclusion of asylum seekers and refugees in the emigration data.Keywords. International migration.JEL. F22
Dynamics in Educational Outcomes by Gender: Evidence from Pakistan
Get PDFAbstract. There is strong empirical evidence that show females as a marginalized group in many aspect within Pakistan with its education sector being no different. However it is extremely important not only to document this fact but to analyze how such tendencies are evolving over time within society. This paper is an attempt in this direction, whereby in our analysis not only we assess how different are female and male population in terms of their current enrollment and attained education patterns but also in terms of structure of change in their attainment distribution as we move from older towards younger cohorts. Our findings show though gender should remain an important policy concern in domain of education sector given the prominent discrepancies in current enrolment and attained schooling estimates within male and female population, however distributional analysis of attainment patterns over age cohorts show that there is definitely some evidence of structural shifts in terms of changing economic constraints and social norms within Pakistan. This can be inferred from evidence that show much stronger inclination of higher education in younger cohorts within female attainment distribution.Keywords. Short Term versus Long Term Economic Planning in Pakistan: The Dilemma
Get PDFAbstract. For long term and sustainable economic development, countries have to start from somewhere. Thus there is a distinction between short term planning and long term gaols setting. However countries like Pakistan have mostly fell into the trap of economic plans that focus on year to year goals setting or in other words macroeconomic stabilisation and usually fail to link policies with long term plans. The paper presents data that supports the hypothesis that it is the initiative of governments and not the donors to link long term economic progress with short term policies.
