Strategic Communication in Chaos Management and a Case Study
Get PDFAbstract. Effective communication may be sufficient under normal conditions, but in chaos conditions strategic communication is required. There has been cases of unsuccessful management during times of sudden huge problems due to the use of wrong communication behaviors. This work presents together an example and the requisites of a successful a strategic communicator in chaotic conditions. The study begins with examples of mismanagement behaviors in strategic communication. It establishes a link between chaos management and strategic communication. A successful example on this topic is drawn from an analysis done on the strategic communication behaviors of the vice president of Coca-Cola Company Shay Drohan considering his ability in the use of strategic communication in handling chaotic situations.Keywords. The Impact of the Employment Protection Legislation Reform on the Labor Market’s Flexicurity in Morocco
Get PDFAbstract. This paper uses the OECD’s methodology to build an Employment Protection Legislation index (EPL) for the Moroccan economy. In this framework, the main objective is to assess the impact of the new Labor Code’s provisions on the degree of flexicurity in the labor market. The paper also investigates the approximate influence of the EPL changes as regards to some employment-related variables. Our results show that after the 2004 Labor Code reform, the labor market’s flexibility level went down from 75 percent to 44 percent, as EPL became significantly stricter. Furthermore, our analysis suggests that the new legislation, although it brought relatively strict restrictions on hiring and firing, generated a significant increase in dismissals during the three first years of its implementation. And unlike the buckle of conventional literature and several empirical findings, the unemployment rate actually dropped, allegedly backed-up by a solid GDP growth during the 2000’s.Keywords. The Cause and Effects of Word of Mouth from Consumer Intention and Behavior Perspectives: A SEM Model Approach

Socio-cultural Evolution, Institutionalized Dispositions, And Rational Expressive Behavior

This paper explores the possibility of grounding human behavior in a social space and characterizing it as a rational expressive, norm-guided behavior based on institutionalized dispositions under bounded rationality. For this purpose, we first review critically the three major theories of cultural evolution, namely, Adam Smith's theory of moral sentiments, Veblen's theory of leisure class, and Bourdieu's theory of habitus and distinction, in order to abstract the common core that provides a basis on which to build a theory of rational expressive behavior under the constraints of economic factors, information flow, social sanctions, and psychological satisfaction. In particular, the paper addresses the following questions: (1) how preferences turn into institutionalized dispositions through habituation, (2) how a socio-economic order evolves as a product of institutionalized dispositions, cultural capital of life-styles, expressive symbolism, and social norms, (3) how social want emerges as a convoluted want reconstituted of social facts of life-styles and desire for upper status identification, (5) how is the behavior based on this want related to the bounded rationality in problem solving. Our inquiry will show that human behavior embedded in a socio-cultural context can be characterized as rational behavior seeking symbolic profits defined by the social want satisfying capacity of choice objects, and that such rational behavior is the source of predictable behavior that can serve as a medium of cultural evolution.Keywords. Responding to the will of the machine: Leadership in the age of artificial intelligence
Get PDFAbstract. The advent of artificial intelligence in the modern economy will revolutionize the workplace of tomorrow. It will alsocreate never-seen-before challenges for leadership. The current leadership theory is extensive but it does not address on how to lead in a workplace composed of intelligent machines. However, it can be observed that leadership theory tends to develop in tandem with the developments in technology - metaphorically termed as will of the machine in this article. Specifically, two phases of leadership require analysis. First, the leadership needed to lead firms through the great transformation from industrial/information to a cognitive economy. Second, leadership needed to manage and lead firms once a relative degree of stability and maturity is reached where intelligent machines occupy the central positon in the workforce. While extensive work exists in leadership theory, this article fills the gap that bridges thefield of applied artificial intelligence with the leadership theory.Keywords. Modeling the Distributive Effects of an Agricultural Shock on Household Income in South Africa: A Sam Multiplier Decomposition and Structurel Path Analysis

Natural resource redistribution and ownership transfer programs are introduced as a way of improving income distribution and alleviating poverty in rural areas of most developing countries. In the case of South Africa, these redistributive policies are implemented in line with the national development plan targeting extreme poverty alleviation and reduction of wide income disparities by 2030. This paper analyses the distributive effects of the land redistribution policy which is a shock in the agriculture sector on poor household income in South Africa by applying a multiplier decomposition and structural path analysis. The study contributes to the existing literature by providing a microscopic analysis of the global multiplier to show the transmission mechanism of household income from a shock into the agriculture sector and show how income moves across sectors, factors and households by dividing the multiplier effects into all its components. The results showed that poor households received higher direct effects and the rich households received high indirect effects from the shock in the agricultural sector. The structural path shows that a significant portion of the global influence of the shock in agriculture is transmitted through the path of factor income which in turn increases poor household income.Keywords.
