Institutional quality and economic growth in East African economies
Get PDFAbstract. This study examines the effect of quality of institutions on economic growth in five East African countries using panel data for the period spanning from1996 to 2015. Fixed effects (FE) and random effects (RE) models were employed for estimation. Using Hausman test, FE was earmarked to be more appropriate model for this study. The empirical findings show that the quality of institution significantly impacts on economic growth. Political stability, government effectiveness, rule of law and control of corruption in particular are significant variables. Regulatory quality, voice and accountability indicate insignificant effect on growth. The results suggest that governance that promotes strong institutions is an important condition for economic growth. Particular focus should be focused on enhancing political stability, government effectiveness, rule of law and control of corruption so as to attain economic development. Keywords. Corruption Forms and Heath Care Provision in Douala Metropolis Public Hospitals of Cameroon
Get PDFAbstract. This study analyzes and highlights the most practised forms of corruption in public hospitals of Douala metropolis in Cameroon, namely corruption with theft and that without theft. The results of our analyzes show a predominance of the form without theft, this regardless of the hospital, and this allowed us to classify hospitals based on the dominant form. It appears that the General and Deido Hospitals are health facilities where corruption without theft is the least and the most practiced respectively, while the Cité des Palmiers and New Bell hospitals are those where corruption with theft is the least and the most practiced. An estimate through odds ratios revealed for instance that the odds would be about 5.46 times higher that the form without theft is not practiced at the General hospital compared to other hospitals, and about 11.11 times that it is practiced at Deido hospital compared to all hospitals.Keywords. Economic Growth and the Growth of Human Population in the Past 2,000,000 Years
Get PDFAbstract. Growth of human population in the past 2,000,000 years is analysed. It is shown that the growth was in three major stages: (1) 2,000,000 to 27,000 BC, (2)27,000 BC to AD 510 and (3) AD 510 to present. Each stage is described by hyperbolic distribution followed by a significantly shorter, non-hyperbolic transition to a new stage. Data show also a minor disturbance in the third hyperbolic stage. Each hyperbolic stage was prompted by a single force, the biologically-controlled force of procreation expressed as the difference between the biologically-controlled force of sex drive and the biologically-controlled process of aging and dying. The fundamental parameter describing hyperbolic growth is given by the ratio of the force of growth and of the resistance to growth. It is assumed that during transitions, this fundamental force remained the same but the resistance to growth was changing. All these three stages, and the minor disturbance in the middle of the third stage, are now described mathematically and explained. The derived parameters are used to calculate the size of the world population in the past 2,000,000 years and to fill in the gaps between data. These parameters can be used to calculate the growth rate at any time in the past 2,000,000 years. Analysis of population data and the earlier analysis of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita allow also for the evaluation of the economic growth in the past 2,000,000 years. Maritime transportation is the backbone of the World Economy. It is generally believed that nearly 90% of world trade is carried by sea. According to UNCTAD records – world seaborne trade volumes were estimated to have exceeded 10 billion tons annually with bulk cargo. In 2015, dry cargo shipments accounted for 70.7 per cent of total seaborne trade volumes. Effect of welfare and economic performance on good governance outcomes in Pakistan
Get PDFAbstract. The paper undertakes a detailed analysis of economic progress and welfare measures in determining good governance outcomes in Pakistan. There is evidence that inequality stifles the capacity of political, economic and social governance by creating an elite class that protect their economic and political interests and undertake legislation primarily to the benefit of ruling elites. Furthermore our results also suggest that economic development empower the economically and socially excluded groups of the society and give them more voice in favor of policies that are representative of the issues like accountability against corruption or favoritism.Keywords. ECOWAS treatise and protocols: Impact on regional cooperation and integration in West Africa

The paper delves into the treatise and protocols of ECOWAS, it also analyses the significance of such protocols to the survival of the organization and betterment of the peoples of the region. Using historical descriptive research from library instrument, findings show that, the organization is doing well in terms of integration, but there still remain some challenges. The paper concludes that, the creation of ECOWAS by the member-states on 28th May, 1975, was to promote cooperation and integration among members especially as it relates to the economic affairs of the sub-region. The community has through its various treatises and protocols ensured that this objective is attained as a result the sub-region is more integrated than it was before the creation of the Community though not without challenges. The paper recommends that, the number of road blocks on the sub-region’s highways should be reduced to give citizens access to travel within the Community with ease, among others.Keywords. This congress organized by Institution of Economic Development and Social Researches (IKSAD). The purpose of congress is to present their research papers in the areas of vocational, technical, politics, economics and social. On the first day of the conference, four panels were made after the opening speeches. The second day sessions were held in parallel on four seas. Average of five presentations were planned to be delivered in each session. In general, the topics of parallel sessions was about to technical sciences, occupational sciences, social studies, literature, history, economic research and political research. Submitted papers as well as presentations and discussions at the conference was conducted in English or Turkish In this way, it was more participation in conference and scholars have opportunity to share easily their academic studies. The papers presented in this congress will be considered in the conference book, in full text or in abstract, after review process.
