    This article describes the flooding of the closing-down open-cut mines in Central Germany. The redesign of the landscape characterised by open-cut mining in Central Germany causes a change of the present Iandscape image and to the formation of a lake and recreating Iandscape at the area. By means of results in the investigation of the water in the developing lakes in the closing-down open-cut mines, the present and the future quality of these lakes will be discussed with a view on their utilisation as bathing facilities.This article describes the flooding of the closing-down open-cut mines in Central Germany.     Wood and ecotone communities are investigated in the western part of the Harzfelder Holz (rural district Nordhausen,Thüringen). Main vegetation types are beech-forests: stands ofthe Carici-Fagetum are found on bituminouslimestone- and gypsum-rendzinas on upper slopes and on plateaus. Beech-forests of acidic soils (Luzulo-Fagetum)are occuring on strong weathered gypsum on steep middle slopes. Stands of the Hordelymo-Fagetum are growingon the more productive soils on upper slopes. In moist and cool sink-holes and narrow valleys maple-tree-ashforestsare found (Fraxino-Aceretum). At sun-exposed edges of the forests thermophilaus plant communities( Geranion sanguinei) are developed.A short valuation of the study area is verifying its very high value for the conservation of nature. The area is indanger because of the digging interests of the gypsum industrie. It is recommended to set the area quickly as anature protected area

    Zur Schmetterlingsfauna der Moore des Brockengebietes (lnsecta: Lepidoptera)

    The author reports on his investigations on butterflies and moths ofbogs on the Mt. Brocken and its surrounding.He discovered !59 species during excursions at day-time and light-trapping. For the largest bogs in the studieddistrict the author discusses their typical fauna. He proposes ecological groups ofLepidoptera as follows: I. speciesof spruce forests, 2. species of deciduous forests, 3. species of tall herb communities, 4. species of sadgereets and cotton-grasslands, 5. species of grasslands, 6. species of herbaceous meadows, 7. species of subshrubcommunities, 8. species of blackberry bushes, 9. species on cryptogamous plants. The classification of thespecies follows the regularity of their occurence. A table shows the tyrphophil and tyrphobiont Lepidoptera onMt. Brocken. The author discusses the occurence of Sterrhopteryx standfussi, Elachista albidella, E. kilmunella,Clepsis rogana, Trichiura crataegi, Cosmotriche lobulina, Clossiana aquilionaris, Erebia epiphron,Elophos dilucidaria, E. vittaria, Eulithis testata, Carsia sororiata imbutata, Acronicta menyanthidis,A.auricoma, Plusia putnami gracilis, Syngrapha interrogationis, Apamea rubrirena, A. remissa, Pseudoipsprasinana, Anarta cordigera and Xestia speciosa more precisely. After that he informs about historicalcaptures of Lepidoptera fauna on bogs on Mt. Brocken. The author also compares the fauna of bogs on Mt.Brocken with the Lepidoptera occuring at similar places in other hercynical mountains. Last but not least a tableof the boreo-montan and alpin elements of Lepidoptera of bogs on Mt. Brocken is given

    .The upper part of the northern marginal zone of the Burgkemnitz channel, one of the deep glacial channels of the Saale-Elbe area, was exposed in the former lignite open-cast mine Gröbern near Gräfenhainichen. The channel was formed by subglacial-hydromechanical processes during the first Elsterian glaciation. In the research area the channel was almost completely filled with sediments by the end of the Miltitz interval, but the area above the channel acted as a sediment trap until the end of the Elsterian glacial stage and locally until the Holsteinian. The exposed channel sediments indicate facial changes between glaciofluvial and glaciolimnic environments. The bedding conditions show that dead ice survived locally in the channel until at least the end of the Miltitz interval

    In 1990 was abonded the 800 years during mining and smelting of copper slates in the Mansfeld area.Concerning the intensity of heavy metal pollution, the influence of the mining dumps as the main elements for the cultural scenery in the Mansfeld area was valued by several environmental studies in this area in a different way up to now. In order to comprehend and estimate the potential of danger and the spatial dimension of possible heavy metal issues of these different structured mining dumps it was necessary to develop and lead special field studies. As one of the main results it turned out that the analysed mining dumps are not the only and most important sources of the recognized heavy metal loading of the environment in this area. The highest values of heavy metal loading could be found only in a small distance around the observed objekts. They are not responsible for the high heavy metal rates the environment of the Mansfeld area is charged with.
