Matija Gogala celebrates his 77th birthday on December 11th 2014. He is among the pioneer researchers of modern insect physiology and bioacoustics not only in Europe, but also worldwide. The authors and the „Arbeitskreis Zikaden“ congratulate him warmly and wish him many good and busy years to come, and most of all, many more exiting days in the field that keep him busy

The use of acoustic and/or vibrational signals as part of the SMRS is ubiquitous in Hemiptera. However, the general knowledge of the mating behaviour of Cixiidae is still patchy. Here we report for the first time evidence for vibrational communication in Apartus michalki along with observations of the courtship behaviour

Studies on the Auchenorrhyncha fauna of grassland in flooded and non-flooded sites in the biosphere reserve „Mittlere Elbe“. – Auchenorrhyncha were sampled on 16 monitoring sites in the Biosphere reserve „Mittlere Elbe“ in the years 2000, 2001 and 2002. 15 sites were mown for nature conservation purposes after the middle of June. On seven days sweepnet samples were taken on each site. 10 sites were located within the flooded area of the Elbe (between Coswig and Badetz above the Saale confluence) and of the Lower Mulde, six sites were located in areas protected against flooding by dams. In total, 4.982 individuals which belonged 102 species were sampled. 80 species were found on the flooded sites, 79 species on the non-flooded sites. 24 and 23 species, respectively, are listed in the red data lists of Sachsen-Anhalt and Germany; 11 and 10 of these species, respectively, were found in flooded sites. A comparison of the species composition using a cluster analysis showed clusters containing both flooded and non-flooded sites. This indicates that ecological factors other than flooding may have stronger effects on the Auchenorrhnycha communities. Mann-Whitney (Wilcoxon) tests showed significant higher means for the number of species and individuals on the non-flooded sites. Most species are typical for extensively managed grassland and meadows. Some rare species feeding on Carex, Juncus, and Phalaris were sampled in moist locations. Most remarkable is the first record of Criomorphus williamsi for Sachsen-Anhalt, which represents only the fourth record of this rare species in Germany

Notes on the biology of Orientus ishidae (Matsumura, 1902) in Piedmont (Italy): (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae)

Some aspects of the biology of Orientus ishidae (Matsumura, 1902) (Hemiptera:Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae) were studied in some protected areas of Piedmont (NorthernItaly) in the years 2012-2014 and in 2016. A case of predacious attack by Icius spec. (juvenile)(Araneae; Salticidae) was observed. Cases of parasitism by Dryinidae (Hymenoptera: Chrysidoidea) and Erythraeidae (Acarina: Prostigmata) were also observed. The mite Erythraeus jowitae Haitlinger, 1987 is reported for the first time for the Italian fauna

The first Psyllid for Iceland: Trioza anthrisci Burckhardt, 1986, and an update of the Icelandic Auchenorrhyncha fauna: (Insecta: Hemiptera)

    Get PDF
The Icelandic fauna of Auchenorrhyncha and Psylloidea was assessed at 14 locations in the south, west and north of the country in August 2013. In total, 1,556 individuals belonging to six species were recorded: Javesella pellucida, Ribautiana ulmi, Edwardsiana rosae, Cicadula quadrinotata, Macrosteles laevis and Jassargus pseudocellaris. Edwardsiana rosae and R. ulmi have only been found in Reykjavík, while the other species are all widespread and common on Iceland. Two further species known to occur on Iceland were not recorded: Evacanthus interruptus and Philaenus spumarius, which both have very restricted distributions. Additionally, with the finding of Trioza anthrisci Burckhardt (Hemiptera: Triozidae) the first psyllid species was recorded from Iceland. One female was found near the airport of the northern town of Akureyri. Some of this species’ main host plants (Angelica sylvestris and the introduced Anthriscus sylvestris) are widespread in the coastal lowlands, but might not have been adequately sampled during earlier investigations. Because only one individual was found, and because of its proximity to an airport, the native status of the species for Iceland remains to be determined, but is not unlikely given its northern occurrence in Scandinavia
