Evaluation of synthesis variables on the antimicrobial and antioxidant efficacy of silver nanoparticles produced using hibiscus sabdariffa extract
The increasing interest in biological synthesis techniques can be attributed to the need for non-toxic ways to produce nanoparticles. This study investigated the influence of different parameters on the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Hibiscus sabdariffa extract. Several analytical techniques were used to characterize the synthesized AgNPs. Furthermore, the antimicrobial and DPPH radical scavenging activities of the AgNPs were evaluated. XRD analysis validated the synthesis of pure nanosized crystalline silver nanoparticles. At room temperature, as the pH rised during the synthesis, the size of the nanoparticles decreased. Additionally, pH had the biggest impact on the distinctive qualities of AgNPs, while extract concentration, metal salt, and pH all affected the nanoparticles' zeta potential. The synthesized AgNPs showed antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, with the greatest activity observed against Staphylococcus aureus. AgNPs have been shown to have greater antibacterial activity when synthesized at a pH of 7.5, as opposed to pH values of 8.5 and 10.5. To sum up, pH played a significant role in the synthesis of AgNPs and was essential for determining the biological activities of the particles. According to this study, it is possible to control nanoparticle synthesis parameters for applications in various industries, such as the food and medical sectors
Stock price forecasting in finance with artificial neural networks
This paper examines the applications of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) in the field of finance, particularly in stock price forecasting. Artificial neural networks are mathematical models that mimic biological nervous systems and are used to solve complex problems such as financial data analysis. Stock price forecasting is an important topic for investors and finance professionals. Artificial neural networks have been widely used in this field due to their ability to process large amounts of financial data, learn complex relationships and predict future price movements. This study deals with stock price forecasting with artificial neural networks using historical stock prices, economic indicators and other financial data. Neural networks attempt to predict future price movements by learning the complex relationships between these data. Stock price forecasting with artificial neural networks can offer a more flexible and adaptive approach than traditional statistical methods. However, the success of the model depends on factors such as the quality of the data set used, network architecture and training parameters. This study was conducted to understand the potential of artificial neural networks in finance and to evaluate their effectiveness in stock price forecasting. The purpose of this study is to explore how artificial neural networks can be used in financial data analysis, and in particular their potential in stock price forecasting. The study is designed to understand the advantages of applying ANN in finance, to evaluate the stock price forecasting performance of this technology and to provide a new perspective that can influence future investment strategies. © 2025 IEEE
Investigation of psychological resilience and care burden of parents caring for children with special healthcare needs in Turkey: A cross-sectional study
Aim: The study was planned to investigate the resilience and care burden of caregiving parents in Turkey. Methods: Demographic and descriptive characteristics were recorded. Psychological resilience was assessed using the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) and caregiving burden was assessed using the Zarit Caregiving Burden Scale (ZCBS). Independent Sample t-test and ANOVA Mann-Whitney U and Kruskall Wallis tests were used to analyze the data.Multivariate variance analysis was performed with post-hoc tests to determine the differences between the groups. Significance p < 0.05 was accepted. Results: A total of 112 caregivers, 97 of whom were women, with a mean age of 39.84 ± 10.73 years, participated in the study. The mean age of with children with special healthcare needs was 10.83 ± 8.56 years, 61.6 % were male, and 42.9 % had both physical and mental disabilities. In children with special health needs, 41.1 % had mobility limitations, 43.8 % had communication problems, 44.6 % had learning problems and 31.3 % had nutritional problems. The level of mobility limitation, communication, learning and nutrition problems in children with special healthcare needs and the presence of chronic disease or musculoskeletal system problems in caregivers were found to be associated with care burden (p < 0.05). Psychological resilience of caregivers of those with moderate care burden was lower than those with mild care burden (p < 0.05). There was a negative, moderately significant relationship between caregivers' psychological resilience and care burden (r = −0.356; p < 0.001). Conclusion: New strategies should be developed to increase psychological resilience and reduce the burden of care in caregivers of complex children with special healthcare needs. Implications to practice: The lived experience of caregivers who support children with special healthcare needs can be improved with psychological and practical care support from health professionals. © 2025 Elsevier Inc
Assessing spatiotemporal characteristics of meteorological droughts in the Marmara Basin using HadGEM2-ES global climate model data
In this study, spatial and temporal characteristics of meteorological droughts in the Marmara Basin, which is located in the semi-arid climate region with the highest population density in Turkey, were determined using HadGEM2-ES global climate model data. Here, precipitation projection data using both RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 scenarios were employed. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was employed to calculate drought intensities, and areal distributions of drought were determined using the inverse distance weighting (IDW) interpolation method. Drought intensity-area-frequency (DIAF) curves for the basin were created by converting point drought intensity data into areal drought data. The DIAF curves provided analysis of the temporal and spatial characteristics of droughts in the basin and revealed that drought intensities are projected to be higher under the RCP 8.5 scenario
A "on-off" fluorescent sensor based on coumarin-furoic hydrazide for recognition of fe3+: drinking water, test strip applications and dft calculations
A coumarin based fluorescent probe (E)-N'-((7-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-chromon-3-yl)methylene)furan-2-carbohydrazide (CFHZ) was synthesized for the detection of Fe3+ and its characterizations were carried out using spectroscopic methods such as FT-IR, mass spectrometry1H-NMR, 13C-NMR. The novel probe CFHZ showed a highly selective and sensitive "turn-off" response to Fe3+ ion without any interference from other analytes. Strong fuorescence quenching phenomena of the CFHZ were observed in EtOH:H2O (99/1, v/v) detection system (lambda em = 470 nm) upon the additions of Fe3+. The binding stoichiometry between CFHZ and Fe3+ was determined by Job's method, FT-IR and MALDI TOF-MS and found to be 2:1. Also, the binding constant was determined to be 1.82 x 105 M-1 and the limits of detection for the analysis of Fe3+ was measured as 25.7 nM. Besides, experimental applications were carried out for real-time monitoring of Fe3+ in water samples using developed sensor. Additionally, fluorescence imaging experiments for Fe3+ detection of CFHZ probe on test papers were successfully performed
Flexible perovskite solar cells: a revolutionary approach for wearable electronics and sensors
Flexible perovskite solar cells (F-PSCs) and flexible perovskite modules (F-PSMs) are explored in detail in this extensive review article, with a particular emphasis on their revolutionary potential to transform solar energy solutions for wearable electronics and sensors. As an alternative to traditional solar technologies, F-PSCs offer unmatched promise thanks to their attributes, which include high efficiency, flexibility, stability, and durability. This comprehensive review assesses the scalability and manufacturability of F-PSCs by delving into their structural complexities, operational principles, and recent advances in materials and fabrication techniques. The operational principles and structural details of F-PSCs are explained, along with updates on materials and fabrication technology developments. This paper examines the emerging uses of F-PSCs in wearable electronics and sensors, highlighting their advantages over conventional silicon-based solar cells and their lightweight design that allows for compatibility with flexible substrates. The difficulties and potential paths for improving the stability and efficiency of F-PSCs are also discussed, highlighting the critical role that these devices play in the development of wearable electronics and renewable energy technologies. © 2025 Elsevier Lt
Segmental trunk control and developmental parameters in children with cerebral palsy aged 24 to 42 months: a cross-sectional study
This study aimed (1) to investigate the relationship between segmental trunk control and motor, cognitive, and language development parameters in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and (2) to compare segmental trunk control levels and motor, language, and cognitive development in children with CP and typically developing (TD) peers. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted with 63 children aged between 24 and 42 months, including those with typical and atypical development. The atypical development group included 30 children with CP ranged from Gross Motor Function Classification System levels I to V (70.0% males, median age: 29 months, interquartile range: 25-36 months), and 33 children in the TD group (69.7% males, median age: 29 months, interquartile range: 26-36 months) included age-matched. Motor, language, and cognitive development domains were evaluated using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition, and the level of trunk control was evaluated using the Segmental Assessment of Trunk Control. In children with CP, segmental trunk control was found to be strongly correlated with motor, cognitive, and language development (all P < .001, Spearman r ranged from 0.767-0.927). Furthermore, children with CP had lower segmental trunk control levels and cognitive, language, and motor development results than their TD peers (all P < .001). The strong relationship between segmental trunk control levels and developmental parameters can guide clinicians and therapists in planning and implementing intervention programs designed for children with CP who have difficulties in trunk control
The protective effect of curcumin on the diabetic uterus: Quantitative and qualitative evaluation
Background: The objective of this study was to examine the impact of diabetes on the rat uterus and to assess the potential therapeutic benefits of curcumin in a diabetic uterus. Materials and methods: A total of thirty-eight female Wistar albino rats were randomly assigned to seven experimental groups. The control group (Cont) was not subjected to any treatment. The sham group (Sham) was administered corn oil, while the curcumin group (Curc) received 30 mg/kg curcumin. A single dose of 50 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ) was administered to induce experimental diabetes. The diabetic animals were then divided into four groups: a group with diabetes mellitus (DM), a group administered curcumin after seven days of diabetes induced (DC1) and 21 days (DC2) after the onset of diabetes, and a group that received curcumin simultaneously with STZ (DC3). The Cavalieri's method was used to estimate the volume ratios of the uterine epithelium, layers, and blood vessels. Results: The volume ratio of the myometrium was observed to be higher in the DC2 group than in the Cont and DM groups. Conversely, the endometrial volume ratio was found to be lower in the DC2 group than in the Cont group. The cell borders and basement membranes of the epithelial and gland cells were well preserved in the curcumin treatment groups, despite the obvious damage observed in the DM group. Similar findings were also observed in the electron microscopic sections, with collagen fibers, which were arranged in thick bands in the DM group and were unable to maintain their ultrastructure, were well organized in the DC1, DC2, and DC3. Conclusion: Considering that it improves the endometrial structure and reduces degeneration in the surface and gland epithelium, it can be said that curcumin is an effective agent in reducing and preventing complications associated with DM in the uterus
The impact of digital literacy and social media addiction levels on professional knowledge acquisition
Teknoloji ve dijital dünyanın sürekli olarak değişmesi ve gelişmesi, dijital okuryazar bireylerin sosyal medyayı mesleki bilgi edinimi bağlamında doğru kullanabilmesini gerektirmektedir. Bu bağlamda; literatürde çalışmaları incelendiğinde; dijital okuryazarlık, sosyal medya bağımlılığı ve mesleki bilgi ediniminin birlikte yer aldığı araştırmalara rastlanmamıştır. İfade edilen kavramlardan iki tanesinin ilişkisinin irdelendiği çalışmalar bulunmakla beraber sınırlıdır. Bu çalışmayla literatürde bulunan bu eksikliğin tamamlanması amaçlanmaktadır. Bu makale, üniversiteye hazırlanan öğrencilerin dijital okuryazarlık, sosyal medya bağımlılığı ve mesleki bilgi edinimi arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemektedir. Çalışma, Türkiye'nin batısındaki bir ilçede bulunan farklı lise türlerinden öğrencilerden veriler alınarak hazırlanmıştır. Dijital okuryazarlık düzeyleri, sosyal medya bağımlılığı ve mesleki bilgi edinimi üzerinde çeşitli faktörlerin etkisi araştırılmıştır. Bulgular, dijital okuryazarlığın mesleki bilgi edinimini olumlu yönde etkilediğini göstermektedir. Ayrıca dijital okuryazarlığın sosyal medya bağımlılığı üzerinde de etkili olduğu belirtilmiş ancak sosyal medya bağımlılığının mesleki bilgi edinimini etkilemediği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Sonuçlar, dijital okuryazarlık becerilerinin ve sosyal medya kullanımının mesleki bilgi edinimi açısından önemini vurgulamaktadır.The continuous change and development of technology and the digital world requires digitally literate individuals to be able to use social media correctly in the context of professional knowledge acquisition. In this context, when the studies in the literature are examined; there are no studies in which digital literacy, social media addiction and professional knowledge acquisition are included together. Although there are studies examining the relationship between two of these concepts, they are limited. This study aims to fill this gap in the literature. This article examines the relationship between digital literacy, social media addiction and vocational knowledge acquisition of students preparing for university. The study was prepared by collecting data from students from different high school types in a district in western Turkey. The effect of various factors on digital literacy levels, social media addiction and vocational knowledge acquisition was investigated. The findings show that digital literacy positively affects vocational knowledge acquisition. In addition, it was also stated that digital literacy has an effect on social media addiction, but it was concluded that social media addiction does not affect professional knowledge acquisition. The results emphasize the importance of digital literacy skills and social media use in terms of professional knowledge acquisition
A political marketing orientated approach to political communication processes: 2023 presidential elections
Politik iletişim ve politik pazarlama, modern demokrasilerde seçmenlerle etkili bir iletişim kurarak seçim sonuçlarını öngörülen şekilde yönlendirmek üzere tasarlanan stratejik yaklaşımları kapsamaktadır. Bu çalışma, 2023 Cumhurbaşkanlığı seçimlerinde Recep Tayyip Erdoğan ve Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu’nun politik pazarlama stratejilerini ve seçim mitinglerindeki söylemlerini, özellikle İstanbul, Ankara ve İzmir gibi nüfus yoğunluğu yüksek şehirlerde gerçekleştirilen mitingler odağında, nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden içerik analiziyle incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırmada amaçlı örnekleme yöntemi kullanılarak belirlenen şehirlerdeki mitingler, adayların politik pazarlama stratejilerinde hangi yaklaşımları benimsediğini, hangi ikna tekniklerini kullandıklarını ve bu yaklaşımların seçmenlerle kurdukları etkileşim üzerindeki etkilerini ortaya koymaktadır. Doküman incelemesiyle toplanan veriler, liderlerin seçmen kitleleri üzerindeki algıyı nasıl şekillendirdiğini, politik iletişim ve pazarlama stratejilerinde benzerlikler ile farklılıkları belirlemek için detaylı bir analiz sunmaktadır. Bulgular, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’ın mitinglerinde ekonomik büyüme ve güvenlik konularını ön plana çıkardığını, “Türkiye Yüzyılı” gibi vizyon odaklı ifadelerle güçlü bir liderlik mesajı verdiğini; Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu’nun ise adalet, demokrasi ve kapsayıcılığı vurgulayarak toplumsal birlik ve umut mesajları sunduğunu göstermektedir. Bu çalışma, politik pazarlama stratejilerinin seçim süreçlerindeki etkisini anlamaya yönelik bir çerçeve sunarak, gelecekteki çalışmalar için stratejik ve uygulamalı öneriler sunmaktadır.In modern democracies, political communication and political marketing encompass strategic approaches designed to communicate effectively with the electorate in order to manipulate election results in the predicted manner. This study aims to examine the political marketing strategies of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu in the 2023 presidential elections and their discourses in their election rallies, with a focus on the rallies held in cities with high population density such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir, through content analysis, one of the qualitative research methods. The rallies in the cities selected using purposive sampling method reveal which approaches candidates adopt in their political marketing strategies, which persuasion techniques they use and the effects of these approaches on their interaction with voters. The data collected through a documentation review provides a detailed analysis of how leaders shape the perception of their constituencies and identify similarities and differences in their political communication and marketing strategies. The findings show that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan emphasized economic growth and security in his rallies and conveyed a strong leadership message with vision-oriented phrases such as “Turkey's Century”, whereas Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu emphasized justice, democracy and inclusiveness, offering messages of social unity and hope. This study provides a framework for understanding the impact of political marketing strategies on electoral processes and offers strategic and practical recommendations for future research
