Utilizing AI to Create and Critique Lesson Plans in Teacher Preparation Programs
This presentation explores innovative strategies for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into teacher preparation courses to enhance students\u27 ability to critically evaluate lesson plans. Attendees will learn how AI tools can assist in creating lesson and activity plans while fostering college students\u27 analytical and reflective skills. The session will showcase the format used by the presenter for guiding her online students in creating plans, as well as how to analyze them for appropriateness of key concepts such as cultural and linguistic responsiveness, developmentally appropriate practices, and classroom management. Participants will leave with actionable ideas for implementing AI in teacher preparation programs to support the professional growth and effective teaching practices of their education students
Human Agency and Voice in the Shadow of Superintelligence
This presentation begins by confronting the threat of artificial superintelligence (ASI) to human agency, authorship, and writing studies. If ASI—an autonomous intellect generating breakthroughs at a pace and scale beyond our comprehension—can produce knowledge, solutions, and creative works in the blink of an eye, will humans offload their thinking, their cognitive development, to machines? Will we stop listening to our felt sense, our inner speech, when composing and trust instead the normal discourse dispatched by algorithms, thereby losing our voices, our identities? To remain relevant, Moxley argues writing studies -- and higher education in general -- needs to (1) clarify the value of both human-authored works and human-AI written works and (2) reconceptualize authorship, academic integrity, and composing processes. Moxley begins the presentation by historicizing the development of SAI. Then invoking Peter Elbow, he plays “the doubting game,” reviewing research and theory informing The Resistance Movement--the argument that higher education should reject GenAI in classrooms. Next, Moxley, invokes “the believing game.” Based on his autoethnographic research, he illustrates ways GenAI can facilitate human agency, voice, and creativity. For instance, he suggests a remediated composing processes should include cognitive, intrapersonal, and interpersonal strategies for using GenAI a thought partner, Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant, Composition Assistant, Designer, Editor, Citation Assistant, or Publishing Assistan
Using AI to Create Context-Enhancing Content for Reading, Writing, and Critical Thinking Exercises Using Issues That Apply to Your Students
Context is a learning pillar for college reading, writing, and critical-thinking students. Engagement is a learning pillar for instructors. With AI, instructors can generate engaging graphics, reading material, grammar, and critical thinking content to create contextual material that appeals to their students\u27 interests. Florida students can do reading exercises about hurricanes. California students can do grammar exercises on wildfires. Instructors can use AI to transcribe interesting local news stories, such as funding firefighting equipment and personnel in wildfire-prone areas to create critical thinking exercises. AI hallucinates and extrapolate, so instructors must monitor AI content for accuracy
The Other AI: Using Artificial Intelligence to Improve Archival Intelligence
The present study considers the benefits and challenges of using generative AI to help students improve archival intelligence - the skills necessary for successful archival research. The activity uses generative AI to remove one of the challenges of developing primary source skills: historical writing. Instead, it allows students to focus on honing and practicing key archival skills like finding, selecting, evaluating, and citing primary sources. Analysis of Queerness and Race in Black Lightning and DCTV Femslash
In this dissertation, I research issues of queer representation and race in the CW network’s DC television (DCTV) shows’ fandom by investigating femslash ships, or the fan pairing of female characters. To do this, I compare the femslash ship of the characters Anissa Pierce and Grace Choi (ThunderGrace), a canon multiracial couple from the CW television show Black Lightning, to three other DCTV femslash pairings: the characters Sara Lance and Ava Sharpe (Avalance), a canon white couple from the television show DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, the characters Alex Danvers and Kelly Olsen (Dansen), a canon multiracial couple from the show Supergirl, and Kara Danvers and Lena Luthor (Supercorp), a non-canon ship of two white characters also from Supergirl. I explore fan content surrounding these four femslash ships through an analysis of the DCTV fan community on the social media platforms Tumblr and Archive of Our Own (AO3). I question how DCTV femslash fans respond to female superhero characters’ identity, including their gender, sexuality and race, in their social media posts, as well as what the lesser popularity of the ThunderGrace fandom compared to other DCTV femslash fandoms reveals about disparities in fan discussion and interpretation based on race. I observe several trends across all four femslash pairs and the fan content dedicated to them, including emphasis on homonormative relationship expectations, appreciation and criticism of the development of queer relationships, descriptions and discussions of race and racial justice, and finally trends in the popularity of femslash ships when considering race, canonicity, and character development. Overall, I find that femslash fandom both challenges and reinforces norms of romantic relationships and queer identity
Placemaking and Soundscaping Practices in the Nested Acoustic Environments of Disney Theme Parks
Auditory tourists, or interactive soundwalkers, come to know the aural cultures of a place through the dynamic interactions of sound and place using site- and time-specific media, stories, soundscapes, and expressive culture sourced from the transmedia franchise the ride or region adapts to the park that play alongside real-time encounters with the physical materiality and soundscapes of the Disney theme park environments. The concept of soundscape and its application has spread widely since Schafer and it continues to be a generative way to understand the complexity of sonic environments, whether that soundscape is a live concert, a scene in a film, an internet meme, a podcast episode, or a themed experience. Theme parks are nested sonic environments, a collection of interconnected yet disparate regions, enclosed and open-air rides, entertainment experiences, enclosures, and mobile and time-based performance events (e.g., fireworks, character experiences), each with their own place-based identity. In this presentation I draw on a range of examples to develop a theory of placemaking and soundscaping practices that compose the acoustic ecology of a specific park. These illustrative examples range from Animal Kingdom’s wildlife enclosures to the Mad Tea Party ride, and from the Silly Symphony Swings to the Magic Kingdom’s audiovisual fireworks displays. I focus on the soundscaping practices of theme park tourism and the ways placemaking strategies are deployed in theme park design, use, and tourism. Soundscaping practices are remix strategies that remediate and rearrange sonic-spatial content for it to be experienced anew while calling back to the source

Advanced Machine Learning Techniques for Cardiovascular Disease Risk Prediction
of mortality, necessitating advanced predictive models to aid early detection and prevention. This study explores the application of machine learning techniques, including Lo- gistic Regression, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Random Forest, and XGBoost, to predict CVD risk using a dataset of 69,997 observations encompassing demographic, clinical, and lifestyle factors. Data preprocessing involved one-hot encoding of cat- egorical variables and scaling to ensure compatibility with all models. Model performance was evaluated using metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and AUC-ROC. Among the models, XGBoost demonstrated the highest accuracy at 74%, leveraging its gradient-boosting framework to effectively handle feature interactions and imbalanced data. Random Forest, with an accuracy of 73%, provided insights into feature importance, highlighting systolic blood pressure and age as critical predictors. In contrast, KNN exhibited lower performance at 66%, attributed to its sensitivity to scaling and high-dimensional data. These findings underscore the potential of ensemble methods like XGBoost and Random Forest in clinical decision-making and public health strategies for mitigating CVD risks
