    Evaluation of Variable Selection Techniques on the Genetic Architecture of Flowering Time in Maize

    In this project, we investigate several variable selection procedures to give an overview of how well they perform on a genomic dataset using three different penalized regression approaches. Comparisons between different methods were performed. These methods include Ridge, lasso, and Elastic Net. We utilized 4494 observations with 7389 SNPs gene scores to predict time to male flowering (dtoa). We assessed the performance of these three models in terms of mean square error. Not surprisingly, Lasso and Elastic Net perform better than Ridge Regression. Overall, Elastic Net performed better in predicting the time of male flowering (dtoa)

    Instruction in Synthesis Writing can be Augmented by Giving Students a Generative AI Prompt

    This entry describes an AI-augmented strategy to assist students in synthesis writing, specifically in a general education writing course. The approach uses an instructor-created generative AI prompt to give additional in-process feedback on drafts, helping students identify and address common synthesis challenges such as patchwriting and sequential reporting. Preliminary results suggest that students using the AI prompt demonstrated increased confidence and improved synthesis skills, as indicated by both their self-reports and better assignment performance compared to previous semesters

Your presence will shape the future of teaching and learning across college campuses. We have brought together a diverse group of experts and thought leaders who will share their insights, ideas, and experiences with using AI in their courses and beyond. While you may encounter research in some of the presentations, our focus is primarily on the sharing of practices.     Creating a Microcredential in Writing with AI: Locating Evergreen Skills and Navigating University Contexts

    This presentation shares our experience developing a 3-course microcredential in AI and Writing, at Kansas State University. Our microcredential teaches evergreen AI literacy skills needed in personal, academic, and workplace writing, such as critical thinking, ethical awareness, the ability to create and shape effective prompts and output, and iteration. We discuss ways to navigate complex university dynamics around AI and share experiences, through our university outreach, with responding to faculty concerns around pressure points. With attendees, we\u27ll brainstorm additional evergreen AI literacy skills and discuss the creation of curricula that balance technical proficiency with enduring competencies

    Improving Learning Outcomes in Mathematics Education through Directed Use of a Generative AI Socratic Tutor

    To improve the learning outcomes among community college math students, Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) performed a preliminary study to explore the effectiveness of generative AI tools as aids to learning mathematics. Two sections (control and experimental) were selected from two math courses to undertake this study: Precalculus and Intermediate Algebra. The study employed Khanmigo, an AI Large Language Model (LLM) developed by Khan Academy in collaboration with OpenAI\u27 s ChatGPT. HVCC was one of the first community colleges to deploy this tool in the classroom. Khanmigo can engage as a Socratic tutor for math students instead of just providing a final result. In the Socratic tutor approach, students ask plain language questions about a math problem, enter a learning conversation with the AI, and are guided toward the solution through a step-by-step iterative process rather than being handed the answer

    Roleplay simulation is a proven method for providing learners opportunities to practice and demonstrate skills. The addition of AI turns these into Dynamic Roleplay Simulations, which allow learners to interact and demonstrate their skills more authentically. This session will show an example of this applied to durable skills assessment. Learners speak with their virtual colleagues, analyze information, and decide what to do in challenges that require them to apply their durable skills. We will also show how this method applies to other skill areas. Bonus: this experience was also created by AI

    Multiple educators are examining and sharing ideas of how to incorporate recently developed AI chatbot tools into lecture and writing based classes. Our goal here is to explore how these AI chatbot tools can assist in teaching and learning outcomes in higher education laboratory classes in a STEM field. We are utilizing AI chatbot tools to help engage with students that are incorporating their own research projects in a STEM laboratory class. We are testing various approaches and will share the impact of these approaches in an upper-level experimental laboratory class at the University of Central Florida
