Basic Study of Physiological Index on Fear of Crime

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to examine a psychophysiological scale in measuring "fear of crime". On this design of experiment, we hypothesized that, if the rate of "fare of crime" is higher because of enviromental factors, respiration becomes faster. We had nine female participants. They rated the level of "fear of crime" with the stimulation of underpasses' photographs. At the same time, we measured their respiration speeds. Four photographs were composed of two factors. One is brightness (light and dark), and the other is existence of a man (with and without a man). Therefore, there were four kinds of stimulations. We obtained the result that ; a) the level of "fear of crime" was related to darkness, b) when the stimulation was rated darker and more fearful, the respiration speed became faster. Thus, the hypothesis was supported. Subjectively rating is related to respiration. This result suggests that "fear of crime" can be measured by psychophysiological scale.departmental bulletin pape

A Study of the Creative Class' Consumer Behavior : Creative Class and "New Tourism"

    Get PDF
departmental bulletin pape

Garden, life and geography: English botanist, Reginald Farrer's Japanese journey and estate management at Ingleborough Hall, Yorkshire.

    Get PDF
This paper explores lifehistory/lifegeography of English botanist, Reginal Farrer (1880-1920). Farrer encountered Japanese gardens in Japan in 1903 and wrote The Garden of Asia : Impressions from Japan in 1904. I discuss this work in relation to his general ideas about rock gardens : My Rock Garden (1907). He had been greatly influenced by his encounter with Japanese gardens in Japan, where he developed his idea of rock gardens. I explore the landscape management of Reginald Ferrer's home at Clapham, Ingleborough, Yorkshire. I consider how Farrar's ideas on rock gardens may be seen as the creation of a "hybrid" garden, while the main stream of Japanese gardens at the age of fashion in Edwardian Britain is the introduction and copy of an "authentic" Japanese garden. Farrer was not interested in copying Japanese garden design, rather he was interested in creating "natural" rock gardens using exotic alpine plants in the British environment. His ideas of rock garden and his estate managment around Clapham village can be seen as an attempt to create a "hybrid" landscape garden in Britain. This paper explores lifehistory/lifegeography of English botanist, Reginal Farrer (1880-1920). The ever-changing face of bilingualism

    Get PDF
This paper is divided into two parts dealing with bilingual issues. In the first section, certain relatively well-known facts about bilingualism are briefly mentioned in order to impart to the reader only things that are absolutely necessary for the understanding of this most complex area of study. The 2nd section of this paper deals with some historical facts that have to do with the American experiences in bilingualism and efforts made, both supporting bilingualism and monolingualism. The reader will note, at the outset, that bilingualism is not a new topic. It has been around for thousands of years, and many nations and peoples have endeavored to deal with it. It is an on-going issue. It will also become readily apparent that this brief paper is not a complete dissertation about all of the issues involved in bilingualism. Indeed, for brevity's sake, only certain things have been dealt with. Not everything involved in bilingual studies has been dealt with here. That is re-served for the huge tomes of knowledge concerning this topic. It will emphasize how America flip-flopped, first accepting bilingualism then rejecting it in the form of 'English only', monolingualism for the sake of national security. Bilingualism, again, is taking center stage these days. It is hoped that this brief paper will introduce bilingual matters and concerns to the reader. It is further hoped that it will inspire a deeper look and investigation into this issue. Indeed, the use of two (or more!) languages is here at present.departmental bulletin pape

Ricardo's model of comparative cost: about physical masses moving in linked economic systems

    Get PDF
The concept of comparative advantage, developed by D. Ricardo in 1817, has the important result that even when a nation does not have an absolute advantage in the production of particular goods or services with another nation, it can still be beneficial for that nation to engage in inter-national trade. - Unlike the traditional approach that uses labor cost and productivity to intro-duce Ricardo's revolutionary concept, the present paper chooses the two products rice and wheat as example and focuses on physical mass of these cereals that is moved and traded between two nations. The study shows that obeying Ricardo's concept triggers a maximum of mass flow inside the total system called "trading nations". This outcome might be helpful when issues like "sustainable development" and "sustainable economic growth" are discussed.departmental bulletin pape

How Senior Citizens Support Child-Rearing? : From the Survey in the City of Kakogawa

    Get PDF
In this papaer, child care support by senior citizens will be considered, taking as an example, "Niko-niko Open Room", implemented in Kakogawa City. In Kakogawa, the Cild Care Consultation Center held a course of lectures for child care support volunteers in 2001. The target of the course was citizens sixty years old or older, with those finishing the course starting work as staff of the Niko-niko Open Room. Since April 2002, twice a month, the Niko-niko Open Room has provided infants and their parents with opportunities of various activities. The activities are joined in by dozens of parent-child pairs each time, and have had acquired favorable reputation. Through this example, this papaer will clearly explain the significance of senior citizens' participation in child care as volunteers, as well as give suggestions as to the direction child care support should be headed.departmental bulletin pape
