The Importance of Learning Experiences in Teacher Training for Early-Career Elementary Teachers: A Study of Reflections on Teacher Certification Course Participation
The aim of this paper is to examine how early-career teachers incorporate their teacher training experiences into their daily educational practices, particularly as they face challenges that test their professional identity. The study focuses on the reflections of 12 young teachers regarding their experiences in teacher certification courses during their training. By analyzing these reflections, the paper explores the multifaceted and diverse significance of teacher training programs. The methodology involved conducting life-story interviews with the participants during their first year of teaching, followed by a second round of interviews approximately a year later to observe changes in their narratives.
The findings indicate that these learning experiences from teacher training serve as valuable tools for addressing various challenges. The meaning of the teacher certification program lies in its adaptability, allowing it to meet the changing needs and interests of new teachers. As they reflect on their past experiences, they continue to grow professionally. Current teacher education reforms prioritize practical skills, focusing on ensuring students acquire the minimum competencies needed for the classroom. However, the reflections of early-career teachers highlight that the true purpose of teacher training programs is to provide a broad and meaningful foundation for long-term professional growth.departmental bulletin pape
In Taiwan, "local language education" such as southern Min, Hakka, and aboriginal languages became a compulsory subject in all elementary and junior high schools in 2001. In conjunction with this change, the Ministry of Education began to take measures such as training "local language" teachers and conducting certification examinations, and assigning those who passed the examinations to teach "local language" classes. This paper focuses on Hakka, and based on the author's observations and interviews, shows that a phenomenon very similar to what is called "Authoritative Knowledge" in anthropology can be observed in government-sponsored local language education.departmental bulletin pape
Analysis of increasing trends in precipitation in western Japan region
It is said that as temperatures continue to rise, the amount of water evaporation increases and the amount of precipitation increases. The Japan Meteorological Agency publishes observation data on its website, making past analysis relatively easy. Using this, we statistically analyzed the amount of precipitation in the western Japan region west of Tokyo, which is said to have a relatively high amount of precipitation. As a result, no increasing trend in precipitation was observed.departmental bulletin pape
Reflection from an Analytical and Creative Perspective through the Practice of Playing and Singing
In student ABC's reflections through the practice of playing and singing, generally the process and results from an analytical perspective, and the results from a creative perspective were considered, but the process from a creative perspective was not considered. This suggests that it is difficult for students who have no experience teaching children to play and sing to imagine and respond to a variety of cases from a creative perspective during the process.departmental bulletin pape
Developmental interaction processes of Japanese researchers and colleagues in western research institutions
Many surveys have pointed out that Japan’s research ability has declined in recent years, highlighting the urgent need for international career development for researchers. Research has focused on the individual learning process and mutual support in the workplace. However, to help ensure the adaptation of researchers and the support of their surroundings, studies need to elucidate the mutual adaptation process between the individual and the surroundings. Therefore, in this study, qualitative data were collected from 18 expatriate researchers and analyzed using a modified grounded theory approach. A total of 47 concepts were generated, and the core category “environment of capabilities” emerged. Depending on how researchers consider the workplace to be a place to demonstrate their abilities (suppression/development/exertion), the approach to (supported/supported/strategy) and from their surroundings (cross-border power) changed. In the discussion, we show the differences and novelty from the existing theory and present suggestions for human resource development in research institutesdepartmental bulletin pape
A Proposal for COIL-based Curriculum Design Incorporating Future Skills Enhanced with Active and Authentic Learning, and Integrity in New Education Normal
A new authentic educational paradigm in the post-pandemic era, i.e., the New Education Normal, is proposed in this paper. Such a paradigm de rigueur incorporates 21st-century skills elaborated in Kharbach (2024). An integrated curriculum incorporating lifestyle, cultural values, regional history, STEAM, and entrepreneurship, is introduced for learners to engage in collaborative gLocal learning through online learning across the border of the campus. In such a curriculum, learners include 1-12 students, university students, and graduate students, i.e., the entire major stakeholders of education. They all engage in active learning authentically with integrity. After experiencing the Pandemic, it is evident that the ultimate goal of education is to raise future generations for the entire globe, not for a nation. It is proposed that the authenticity of learning should transcend culture, heritage, values, and wisdom from generation to generation at the global level.departmental bulletin pape
Approach to Reconstruct School Management StrategiesⅡ: Curriculum Management for High School-University Collaboration
The revision of the Courses of Study has promoted diversification and learning choices in high schools. Both high schools and universities are required to take a flexible approach based on their respective purposes and roles. After the merger, we positioned our own high school-university collaborative program as “Kansai University of International Studies Project” and included it in the guidance plan. The first year of implementation was discussed, overlooking the modern temperament of high school students and the direction of education within the current trends of the times. We have confirmed that if we start by understanding the environment surrounding the school through curriculum management, and if we make the PDCA cycle function to materialize and monitor it, we can not only achieve certain results in terms of career satisfaction, but also derive both a special solution that is the best method in the unique culture of a private school, and an optimal solution that can be used in any school.departmental bulletin pape
Development of Data Science Education Materials for Data-Informed Learning
In data science education, there is a need to develop teaching materials that provide students with a thorough understanding of the challenges that arise in the data analysis process, as well as the interpretation and utilization of results. In this study, we propose a data-informed data science education teaching material. The teaching material emphasizes the process of problem-solving based on data, with the aim of cultivating students' ability to think with data. In particular, it is possible for students with a high sense of programming difficulty, such as students in the humanities, to learn data analytics in a non-programming environment and interactive visualization content.departmental bulletin pape
