Blues and Japanese Rock A Study on the Reception of Western Music from the 1950s to the 1980s

    Get PDF
This paper reviews the reception of blues in Japanese rock history and discusses the unique Japanese view of rock and blues. Blues is regarded as one of the roots of rock along with country and western, folk, and skiffle. However, it would be inappropriate to apply the same picture to rock music in Japan as in the U.S. and Britain. In Japan, there was a blues boom in the 1970s that came after rock music. It was discovered in the process of pursuing "real rock". n this analysis, Jason Toynbee's discussion of "creativity" in popular music production is instructive. Based on the literature and documents, this paper analyzes how the blues was selected from various musical fragments and incorporated into Japanese rock in each period, focusing on New-rock in the 1960s, Kansai-blues in the 1970s, and Mentai-rock in the 1980s. departmental bulletin pape

An Attempt at Formal Semantic Analysis of Kinship Terminology by Computer

    Get PDF
In 1971, H. W. Scheffler and F. G. Lounsbury developed a formal semantic analysis of kinship terminology. It had many merits, but it was difficult to deploy manually its vast procedures, and it was not widely used. Now I have wrote a computer program to perform Formal Semantic Analysis automatically. By this program, I would like to reevaluate the merits and possibilities of formal semantic analysis, especially in cross-cultural understanding and kinship studies.departmental bulletin pape

Nurses' Judgment about Additional Sedation in the Pediatric Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit

    Get PDF
PURPOSE: This study aims to clarify how nurses determine the need for additional sedation for children with congenital heart disease in a pediatric cardiac intensive care unit. METHODS: We conducted semi-constructive interviews with seven nurses and analyzed the results qualitatively descriptively. RESULTS: Based on their knowledge and experience, the nurses had developed a disposition that guided their decision-making process to “care for the child with a prepared mind.” The nurses then assessed the children’s reaction to continuous sedation and “made an immediate decision for additional sedation based on the predicted physical effects on the child,” such as cardiac load and probable safety issues (e.g., unscheduled extubation and removal of infusion). For children who did not require immediate additional sedation, the nurses attempted to interpret their cries and comfort them. At the same time, the nurses were making a wide range of predictions about the children’s well-being. Then, they chose to "do what was best for the child.” These were influenced by the characteristics of children with congenital heart disease, for whom crying is a cardiac load. departmental bulletin pape

A Critical Examination of Views of Language from the Perspectives and Ways of Thinking Pertinent to Foreign Languages and Japanese Language

The new Course of Study clearly outlines the collaboration between foreign languages and the Japanese language. This study critically examines the language perspectives in the subject-specific “perspectives” and “ways of thinking” in the development of language perspectives in a foreign language and the Japanese language. It was determined that it would be preferable for Japanese language education to transition from an emphasis on language knowledge systems (such as structure and function of language) to a focus on expression, and for English language education to shift its emphasis from knowledge systems to communication. This approach would facilitate the gradual transformation of language perspective at the elementary, junior high, and high school levels, taking into consideration the cognitive developmental stages of pupils and students.departmental bulletin pape

Construction of fieldwork-based learning - to involve and connect students

    Get PDF
AA12939280In recent years, many universities have begun to offer fieldwork-based learning as a liberal arts course that is open to all students. Despite the high educational effectiveness, teachers are also faced with the problem of how to involve students who have little motivation for the region nor its research with the fieldwork. With the prospect of collecting examples of other teachers' efforts, I present my trials and tribulations in this paper, including "field clips", "field comics", "pre-research", " handover PBL" and "fail-able PBL". From those trials and errors I can extract "three connections" to involve students with fieldwork. These are: making connections with residents before the prior learning, connecting prior learning with the previous year's participants' survey results, and connecting deliverables to the online worlddepartmental bulletin pape

Survey of high school students' attitudes towards social media use and changing attitudes through interaction with undergraduate students, in the Service-Learning Program

    Get PDF
In this study, undergraduate students provided social media literacy education to high school students through the Service-Learning Program at Kansai University of International Studies. In the study, undergraduate students deepened their own knowledge of social media and engaged in discussions with high school students twice. The results showed that repeated discussions increased students' anxiety when using social media. The results showed that the students' knowledge of social media use also increased. It’s suggesting that their anxiety was caused by their understanding of social media and their knowledge of literacy本研究では関西国際大学のサービスラーニングプログラムを通して大学生が高校生にソーシャルメディアリテラシー教育を実施した.

The School of Sociology conducted Service-Learning courses in five different neighboring regions to the campus. As a unique feature of the learning service offered by the School of Sociology, such learning activities are available to students throughout the academic year while other departments only offer semester-long one-credit short trainings. And, further, each service-learning has its targeted regional community for student activities. In addition, instructors are assigned to a specific local community to be fully immersed in the regional network with the stakeholders. In this report, we will report on the activities, learning processes, results, and issues to highlight in each regional community.departmental bulletin pape

Conflicts between Parents and Adolescents: The Situation as Revealed by Survey Results

    Get PDF
Many studies have been conducted on the relationship between parents and adolescents. They generally used the term "teenage rebellion," which describes the conflict between parents and adolescents. However, some studies report a change in such conflicts. This study examined the behaviors and feelings from free-response statements, obtained from college students, to understand the actual situation of conflicts between parents and adolescents . A total of 38 people participated in the survey, and 26 of them (68.4% of the total) indicated past instances when they felt strongly rebellious. The analysis was conducted by dividing the participants into those with and without rebellious incidents. A limitation of this study is the small number of survey participants. However, results on the emotional and frequency of rebellion, both emotional and behavioral, showed that few adolescents rebelled on a daily basis, with many mildly specific rebellious behaviors. This suggests that, overall, as shown in previous studies, few adolescents experience severe rebellion or conflict and that breakdowns in the relationship between adolescents and their parents, even if only temporarily, are rare. However, certain responses did not receive much attention in traditional adolescent psychology, such as rebelling against forcefully obeying parents' instructions, or not rebelling against parents, as they deem this action to be meaningless.departmental bulletin pape

Student learning in pediatric nursing practice from health, education at a nursery school

    Get PDF
This study aimed to clarify the learning obtained by nursing students in pediatric nursing practice through health education at a nursery school. The subjects were 38 third-year nursing students. Analysis of the free descriptions of health education before and after nursery school practice resulted in the extraction of three aspects that students wanted to learn prior to the practice: clues on how to relate to children, ways to relate to children, and nursing according to the growth and development of children. Six aspects were extracted from students’ learning after the practice: innovative drawing to attract children’s interest, innovative methods to help children concentrate, innovative methods to encourage children’s comprehension, understanding children’s unimaginable abilities, important aspects when interacting with children, and the experience of being shaken by children’s reactions. Students in pediatric nursing practice require support that (a) motivates them to learn, (b) helps them apply their learning from nursery school practice to hospital practice, and (c) promotes health education at the preparatory stage so that they can accept and positively interpret children’s reactions and face children with a sense of peace and calmness. Furthermore, health education in nursery school practice deepens students’ understanding of children and encourages them to grow as caregivers. departmental bulletin pape

Acquisition of English Intonation:with a focus on 3 Ts

    Get PDF
This study discusses the acquisition of intonation in English by Japanese University students whose major is TEFL. We introduced the principle of the 3Ts (Tonality, Tonicity and Tone) as in M. A. K. Halliday(1967)Intonation and Grammar in British English, The Hague: Mouton, and J. C. Wells (2006), English Intonation, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, and their tune structure was analyzed; ①first, auditorily by the present author, ②second, acoustically by computer. The tonal structures of the model recording and learners’ recording were analyzed acoustically by drawing the pitch-contour using computer applications such as Praat or WASP, ③third, the above two analyses of intonation were compared to describe the validity of the 3T principle of Halliday and Wells. Finally, all these results were integrated to discuss the relationship between the model recording and the students’ acquisition of English intonation. We found that the learners succeeded in almost perfect reproduction of model intonation after 6 months’ practice of the 3T principle, therefore we could say that the subject did quite well in the acquisition of the 3T principle and end-focus principle. However, as the numbers of the subjects was limited and the period of the experiment was forced to be shortened because of a physical accident of this author, we cannot say anything definite. We expect to continue the project into the next academic year, so that we can provide more plausible results with more subjects in the experiment.departmental bulletin pape
