SPORTS DURING THE AXIS OCCUPATION OF GREECE: SPORTS ASSOCIATIONS’ COMPLIANCE AND RESISTANCE, 1941-1944
The Hellenic Association of Amateur Athletics (HAAA) and the Union of Greek Athletes (UGA) were two pivotal sports organizations in Greece. However, their actions during the German occupation of Greece were diametrically opposed. Specifically, HAAA chose to suspend its activities following the German invasion, whereas UGA initiated its actions after the famine of 1942. This dichotomy is interpreted through the lens of ideological polarization between progressivism and conservatism. The HAAA’s decision to accept the new political situation and cease its activities, in contrast to the UGA’s choice to resist and support the athletic and broader Athenian society, is analyzed in ideological terms. The Communist Party of Greece (CPG) supported the progressive ideology expressed by the UGA. Athletes recognized its contribution in contrast to the ideologically conservative HAAA. Based on the findings, the paper recommended that the government at all levels should organising sporting competitions at all the tiers of the government for youth’s talent development and that there is a need for building facilities and equipment in all the local governments in Nigeria to enhance youth’s sports development
RELATION BETWEEN THE BODY COMPOSITION AND STRENGTH OF RESPIRATORY MUSCLES
Lung function and respiratory muscle strength are thought to be affected by body composition. The relationships between the components of body weight and the markers of lung function, however, are generating more and more interest. There has not been much research done on how body composition factors, like lean and fat masses and their distribution, affect breathing capacity. Researchers have been studying the connection between pulmonary functions and body composition since the middle of the 1950s. There has been research on the relationship between pulmonary function and body composition, but the findings have been inconsistent. The aim of this study was to examine the correlation between the body composition and respiratory muscle strength of football players. For this purpose, 12 healthy athletes participated in our study. The measurements of the participants were performed in the laboratory. Body composition measurement was carried out using a body composition analyzer with Tanita (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis). Respiratory muscle strength measurement was performed with a respiratory pressure meter. When the data were analyzed; there were no significant differences between the parameters of the participants' body composition and respiratory muscle strength parameters (p>0.05). In conclusion, it could be said that there is no significant correlation between body composition and respiratory muscle strength. Article visualizations
CHOOSING CERTAIN TESTS TO EVALUATE THE MALE ATHLETES' PROFESSIONAL PHYSICAL FITNESS FOR THE TAEKWONDO TEAM AT TRA VINH UNIVERSITY, VIETNAM
Taekwondo is a sport that is not only competitive in competition, especially in speed and variation, but is also an attractive sport suitable for all subjects, ages, and genders, and its practitioners learn self-defense, health improvement, and complete physical development. A Taekwondo athlete's performance is mostly determined by their level of physical conditioning. The purpose of this article is to identify tests for evaluating male Taekwondo team athletes at Tra Vinh University's professional level of physical conditioning. In order to effectively address the research method, the article makes use of standard scientific research techniques in the fields of physical education and sports, including document consultation, interviewing, pedagogical assessments, and statistical mathematics. The article has identified 7 tests to evaluate professional physical fitness for male Taekwondo team athletes at Tra Vinh University through the processes of synthesizing documents, interviewing, and verifying reliability. These tests include: Long Jump (cm), High Jump(cm), Run T-test (second), Vertical sweep (cm), Horizontal sweep (cm), rope skipping for 30 seconds, and moving horizontally 5m x 10 times (s). EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND FAKE NEWS QUOTIENT OF BPE STUDENTS
This descriptive correlational design study aimed to describe the significant relationship between emotional intelligence and the fake news quotient of BPE students. The results from 200 BPE students from the College of Teacher Education of the University of Mindanao revealed the following: the level of emotional intelligence was high; the level of fake news quotient was high; when correlated, there is a significant and moderate positive relationship among the variables. This implies that emotional intelligence could moderately affect the fake news quotient of BPE students, where emotional intelligence will allow them to determine fake news. However, having an average level of emotional intelligence will not only be the factor that influences the determination of fake news. Thus, determining the students' emotional intelligence level provides insight to teachers on how emotional intelligence may affect the fake news quotient of BPE students. Article visualizations
BRAZILIAN TEACHERS OF PORTUGUESE AS A FOREIGN PERCEIVE THEMSELVES AS LESS PREPARED TO TEACH GRAMMAR THAN THEIR EUROPEAN COUNTERPARTS
Brazilian teachers profess to enjoy teaching and studying grammar and rank the importance of explicit grammar instruction similarly to their European counterparts or teachers from other nationalities. However, Brazilian teachers differ from other instructors when it comes to their perception of their own preparedness to teach grammar. They consistently rank themselves below their peers when it comes to evaluating their background formation, and their ability to find grammatical information when they don’t know it. They also rate the didactical materials at their disposal as less adequate than both foreign and Portuguese teachers do. This may be explained by the academic culture in Brazilian universities, especially when it comes to educating new teachers. There has been a consistent dismissal of the importance of grammar in Brazilian Applied Linguistic fields and the results of this survey may indicate that teachers could benefit and acquire security from a more comprehensive formational process. ENHANCING L2 LEARNERS' WRITING: IMPACT OF PRODUCT AND PROCESS APPROACHES
This study investigated the effects of two approaches to teaching writing (product and process) on the development of writing skills of Moroccan EFL high-school students. Two intact classes of 86 third-year high-school students participated in the present study. A pre-test was administered to all participants to measure their writing competence in expository essay writing. Each group was then subjected to a specific treatment. The experimental group was instructed to use a process-based syllabus, while the control group followed the original product-based syllabus. In the process-oriented syllabus, students were guided through various stages of the writing process via activities like brainstorming, collaborative problem-solving, free writing, multiple drafting, structured peer feedback, and teacher-student conferences. Conversely, the product-oriented syllabus focused on teaching writing through model analysis, writing exercises, and structured feedback sessions with teachers. Following the instructional period, participants underwent a post-test to assess the impact of each approach on their writing proficiency. Statistical analyses, including Paired Samples T-test and Independent Samples T-test, demonstrated that both approaches led to improvements in students' writing performance, with the process-based approach being more effective. Participant feedback on the questionnaire also supported these findings. The study concludes by outlining implications for the teaching of writing in second language (L2) contexts. UNRAVELING THE USE OF COGNITIVE AND METACOGNITIVE LEARNING STRATEGIES AMONG MOROCCAN EFL FIRST-SEMESTER UNIVERSITY LEARNERS
This study, drawing on the theory of metacognition as a lively research area in the field of educational psychology, is intended to explore the cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies (CMLSs) tapped by the English department first-semester university students in their learning practices. It is an attempt to evaluate the extent to which EFL learners resort to these ‘high-level’ heuristics for executing a diversity of learning-related tasks. To achieve this stated objective, this exploratory study targeted 63 Moroccan English department students. The data were gathered through the use of a ‘self-report questionnaire’ that addressed the learners’ recourse to (meta) cognitive learning strategies (CMLSs) along the continuum of their academic studies at the first-semester level. The outcomes reached manifestly exhibit that heavy reliance on cognitive strategies (CSs) and reduced dependency on metacognitive strategies (MSs) prototypically characterized the learners’ adopted processing modes in tackling differing learning tasks relatable to studying English as a foreign language (EFL). Hence, some actionable recommendations as well as a few limitations encountered in conducting this study are explicitly put forward. Article visualizations
COMPARING STUDENTS’ ATTITUDE TOWARD CODE-SWITCHING
This study aimed to determine the significant difference in students’ attitudes toward code-switching when analyzed according to age, gender, and ethnicity. The study employed the non-experimental quantitative research design utilizing the descriptive-comparative method and stratified random sampling with Mean, t-test, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) as statistical tools. Researchers used adapted and validated survey questionnaires in gathering the data from the 200 target respondents. The result showed that the affective indicator of the student’s attitude generated a high mean score and showed that the items were often manifested. This means that students’ positive attitude toward code-switching is often manifested, implying that students use code-switching frequently and have a positive outlook on it. It was also found that the students’ demographic profiles do not have a significant difference in their attitude toward code-switching. Even the results show no significant difference; these results still emphasize the importance of integrating code-switching into educational practices, acknowledging its potential benefits in enhancing linguistic flexibility and fostering communication strategies in academic settings. Researchers emphasize performing more research regarding code-switching that is not included in the current study and explore different approaches to deepen understanding of the reasons behind their attitude by providing plausible factors and elaborations. INVESTIGATING THE LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT OF INDIVIDUALS WITH DOWN SYNDROME, AND HIGHLIGHTING THE IMPORTANCE OF SPEECH THERAPY
Down syndrome is the most common viable numerical chromosomal abnormality, affecting one in every 600 births. It is the most common cause of intellectual disability due to genetic factors. Nearly all individuals with this syndrome have an extra copy of the 21st, leading to cognitive and physical disabilities. Down syndrome can be detected through prenatal screening and is classified into three categories: trisomy 21, mosaicism, and translocation. The main aim of this study is to investigate the linguistic characteristics of people with Down syndrome and demonstrate the value of speech therapy. Statistical analysis shows that the linguistic development of individuals with Down syndrome differs in every subsection from normal development. There are deficiencies not only in their linguistic development (i.e., phonology, morphology, syntax, and pragmatics) but also in many cognitive categories (e.g., memory). Furthermore, this study confirmed the value of speech therapy through personalized intervention. However, we found that the speech therapists who participated in this survey did not have the appropriate expertise. Their knowledge of Down syndrome was good, but they needed a deeper understanding of the syndrome. Article visualizations
