    Get PDF
The neuro-linguistic approach emphasizes man's behaviours as the product of neurological processes within and the experience of the external world outside. When an individual wishes to get into a desired behaviour, Neuro-linguistic Programming helps one to understand one’s current situation and gives a road map to the desired state (1). When NLP is applied in sports, mental skill training, contributes to the new desired behaviour in the form of optimal performance in their respective sports. Objective: This paper aims to examine a tailor-made NLP intervention to reduce low self-determination, poor emotional maturity, and low motivation among two university women volleyball players. Method: This study used a case study approach, and employed NLP techniques such as; collapsing anchoring, and meta-model language patterns, to help two athletes who experienced low self-determination and low motivation and found it emotionally difficult to perform in training and competition, to restructure their dysfunctional thoughts, emotions and memories. Results: The intervention showed promising improvement in helping Participant A to be more resilient and Participant B to be higher in motivation. The results obtained from the interview sessions, and through the quantitative analysis showed that the NLP intervention had successfully helped the participants to cope with dysfunctional thoughts and emotional imbalance and to bounce back. Conclusions: The NLP-based intervention, has helped the players to be more self-determined, experience much Emotional control and maturity, and increase the level of sports achievement motivation and sports resilience.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of the Coronavirus 19 epidemic on the life satisfaction levels of university students. The life satisfaction scale completed by a total of 530 university students was evaluated. Independent t-test, paired t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and LSD tests were used for statistical operations. Life satisfaction scores of university students did not show a statistically significant difference according to their gender, both before the epidemic and during the epidemic (p>0.05). Compared to the situation before the new Coronavirus 19 epidemic, life satisfaction scores during the epidemic decreased statistically significantly (p<0.001). During the epidemic, it was determined that life satisfaction scores changed according to sleep patterns and perception of forgiveness (p<0.05 and p<0.001). In this study, the difference in life satisfaction scores according to the level of exposure to coronavirus news in social media watching TV during the epidemic, and following coronavirus news on the internet is insignificant (p>0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded that the Coronavirus 19 epidemic did not show a significant difference according to gender on the life satisfaction levels of university students. However, life satisfaction levels were adversely affected during the new type of Coronavirus 19 epidemic. While sleeping patterns and reliance on their immunity were effective in this negative effect, it was seen that watching TV, following the news on the internet, and being exposed to news on social media about the epidemic were not effective. Necessary studies are recommended for university students to trust their immunity and to have good sleep patterns.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
This paper reports the quantitative phase of an ongoing explanatory sequential mixed methods research design on Movement Competence Ambition (MCA) among human kinetics students in public universities within the South-Western geo-political zone of Nigeria. The study holds and treats ambition as a psycho-philosophical concept. The psychological perspective of ambition implying achievement motivation was mixed with its philosophical view of honour-seeking behaviour. Both perspectives relate to Einstein’s inertial-tendency postulate regarding reference frames. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 418 respondents (199, 47.6% males; 219, 52.4% females); x̅ age = 20 years and 1 month). A self-developed 15-item validated questionnaire r =.81 built on the four “P’s” plus one added of ambition drivers, i.e. Predisposing, Precipitating, Perpetuating, Protective, and Prospective (added) factors was the main instrument for data collection. Descriptive statistics of frequency, and percentage, were employed to depict respondents’ bio-data while collected data was analysed with mean and rank ordered. Results indicate that 377 (90.2%) of the students were fairly ambitious while 41 (9.8%) were highly ambitious. 90.9% of males and 89.5% of females were fairly ambitious while more females (10.5%) were highly ambitious as compared to males (9.1%). Though there was no marked difference between the ambition statuses by gender, however, females showed a better level of ambition compared to males. The predisposing factors with a mean of 4.1 have the highest impact on movement competence ambition followed by precipitating factors with the second highest mean value of 3.5. Other factors do not affect the population's ambition status as the factors have mean values below the criterion average of 3.5. Therefore, the predisposing and precipitating factors are areas of concentration to enhance the students’ achievement goal orientation in movement competence.  Article visualizations

FACTORS ARISING FROM THE UTILIZATION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND LARGE LANGUAGE MODELS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING

    Get PDF
This literature review aims to create a connection between Special Education and Training (SET) with Artificial Intelligence (ΑΙ), specifically focusing on machine learning language models. These systems analyze language structures and rapidly generate text that closely resembles human expression. While AI tools have been present since the last century, global technological and research interest in AI experienced resurgence in November 2022 with the release of ChatGPT, a machine learning language model –“chatbot”. The introduction of this tool raised expectations for its potential in educating individuals with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SENDs). However, the literature also highlights concerns about potential risks and challenges associated with the widespread use of such tools in education. This paper explores the intersection of Special Education and Training goals and Large Language Models (LLM), presenting in the results the potential benefits and risks that may emerge from this interaction.  Article visualizations

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of rehabilitees with visual impairment cane skills on their independent travel. The study was based on Bandura’s social cognitive learning theory. The researcher used a case study research design. The study was carried out at Kenya Institute for the Blind located in Nairobi County, Kenya. The target population was two orientation and mobility trainers and fifty rehabilitees with visual impairment who lost sight between the years 2011 and 2016 and who underwent rehabilitation at KIB. A purposive sampling technique was used to select KIB for the study. Snowball sampling technique was used to locate thirty-seven rehabilitees with visual impairment. Data was collected using questionnaires. The pilot study was conducted at Machakos Technical Institute for the Blind because of its similar characteristics in the admission of rehabilitees with visual impairment. The researcher ensured the content validity of the research instruments through discussion with supervisors and lecturers in the Department of early childhood and Special Needs Education. Quantitative data was gathered using questionnaires and processed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) program. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics and presented using tables. The findings revealed that mobility canes were the main device used at Kenya Institute for the Blind for orientation and mobility. Worldwide, canes were the most used device for orientation and mobility for individuals with visual impairment. In KIB, the device was limited in supply and not readily available. Cane skills were the most popular orientation and mobility techniques among rehabilitees in KIB. The study concluded that rehabilitees were not adequately trained since a substantial period of time has elapsed yet they have not indicated favourable independent travel to their places of work. Orientation and mobility training at KIB led to the acquisition of necessary skills relevant to independent travel of individuals with visual impairment. The study recommended that there is a need for Kenya Government to facilitate the production of cheap locally made long canes suitable for our Kenyan roads.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
This cross-sectional research study explores various forms of bullying experienced by students and their impacts on their sense of self at selected national high schools in Apopong District, Division of General Santos City. Three key questions are addressed: identification of encountered bullying forms, examination of their effects on students' sense of self (physical, emotional, intellectual, behavioral, social, and creative), and development of school interventions based on the findings. Data was collected from forty-five high school students through a survey questionnaire adapted from Anderson's (2007) work, with triangulation through focus group discussions. Results show verbal bullying is most prevalent, followed by emotional and physical bullying. The impact on students' sense of self varies, with physical sense moderately affected. perceived impact leads to feelings of powerlessness, inferiority, and fighting back. Recommendations include debriefing workshops to address self-esteem issues. Further research in diverse settings is advised to understand bullying prevalence and design effective interventions. The proposed "Bullying Prevention Program" empowers teachers to create secure learning environments and enhance student well-being. Continuous monitoring and evaluation ensure program efficacy.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
The study investigates the complex dynamics among these variables within a cohort of 894 Chinese undergraduates, comprising 46.7% males and 53.3% females, spanning various academic levels. Employing robust measurement tools, including the Compulsive Internet Use Scale (CIUS), Sleep Quality Scale (SQS), and Social Media Fatigue Scale (SMFS), the research delineates significant findings. The descriptive analysis reveals elevated levels of compulsive internet use, which is positively correlated with sleep quality (r=.316, p<.01) and moderately with social media fatigue (r=.217, p<.01). Cross tabulation analysis uncovers gender disparities, with males exhibiting higher compulsive internet use but marginally better sleep quality, while social media fatigue remains relatively balanced across genders. Furthermore, a progression is noted across academic levels, with seniors displaying the highest compulsive internet use and social media fatigue, coupled with a slight decline in sleep quality. Linear regression analyses underscore the predictive significance of compulsive internet use on both sleep quality (R²=.662) and social media fatigue (R²=.463), highlighting the intricate bidirectional influences. This study contributes nuanced insights into the dual impacts of digital media consumption, emphasizing the necessity for gender-specific and academic level-targeted interventions to mitigate adverse outcomes. The overarching aim is to foster a deeper understanding of these dynamics to inform the development of effective strategies for managing digital consumption, thereby promoting healthier living in our increasingly connected world.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
The study examined the impact of the National Teachers’ Standards on the instructional methods of mathematics educators in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region of Ghana, guided by the Concerns-Based Adoption Model. A cross-sectional research design was adopted. The target population was all basic school teachers in the district, whereas the accessible population was all junior high school mathematics teachers, thus, through the census sampling technique, a sample size of 82 respondents participated in the study. The researchers deployed a closed-ended questionnaire to unravel the impact of the National Teachers’ Standards on instructional methods among mathematics teachers. Reliability coefficients for NTS and instructional practices constructs were 0.92 and 0.85, respectively, indicating strong reliability. Data analysis utilized frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviations, simple linear regression, and Pearson’s correlation. The findings revealed prevalent practices such as question-based learning support and group engagement, with limited emphasis on low-cost materials and gender-responsive pedagogy. Teachers demonstrated a robust understanding of NTS and the curriculum framework, though variability existed. Notably, teachers’ NTS knowledge significantly predicted instructional practices, highlighting its crucial role. Hence, it was recommended, among others, that the Sekyere Central Directorate of Education should invest in the design and delivery of evidence-based, teacher-centered professional development interventions and collaborative learning networks to enhance teachers' pedagogical content knowledge and facilitation skills in alignment with the National Teachers Standards, thereby improving teaching quality, student learning outcomes, and overall educational effectiveness.  Article visualizations

REFLECTION AS AN INSET TOOL FOR TEACHERS’ PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE 21ST CENTURY: A QUANTITATIVE STUDY

    Get PDF
The major importance of reflection to teachers’ professional development in the 21st century via the exploration and re-examination of perceptions, attitudes and practices related to their didactic and pedagogical work has been widely recognized in the scholarly literature. The purpose of this paper is to discuss an empirical study which investigates the extent to which reflection is used as an INSET tool for teachers’ professional development in the 21st century. The research questions examine whether in-service training (a) fosters teachers’ individual and collective reflection, (b) activates teachers’ reflection on their educational practices and (c) uses reflective methods/techniques which contribute to teachers’ professional development. To this end, the quantitative research method was selected to gather data via an online questionnaire answered by 290 in-service state-school primary teachers. According to the research findings, in-service training slightly or not at all implements reflective training practices to foster teachers’ individual and collective reflection on their educational work, which results in teachers’ low satisfaction with INSET methods and techniques. Furthermore, empirical data reveal that in-service training does not foster teachers’ reflection to encourage them to explore, re-examine and change their deep-rooted educational perceptions and practices, while the inadequate use of reflective training practices which could enable trainee teachers to perceive, understand and cope with the challenges emerging from their complicated role and mission in the 21st-century socio-educational context also results in INSET failure to contribute to teachers’ professional development in the 21st century. Findings raise implications for INSET review and reform regarding the implementation of more reflective training practices towards developing teachers’ reflective skills as a prerequisite to the 21st-century socio-educational transformation.  Article visualizations
