INCLUSION OF IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY IN EDUCATION: A QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
In the modern globalised environment, the extended immigrant and refugee crisis is at the centre of the scientific, social, and political debate. Meanwhile, the field of Intercultural Education is of paramount importance for social cohesion as the education system is affected by the aforementioned crisis. Against this complicated backdrop, the double challenge of the promotion of educational inclusion of students with diverse cultural backgrounds and disability should be the focus of attention for teachers and policymakers. The present study examines the issue of inclusion of immigrant and refugee students with disability. It employs the qualitative method of thematic analysis, collecting data through semi-structured interviews with teachers who work in Reception Classes and Typical Classes of Intercultural schools in the Prefecture of Epirus, Greece. The data analysis revealed that the participants highlighted the need for restructuring the Greek education system on two levels: the macro level and the micro level. This study underlines the need for systemic change and cooperation to create an environment without exclusion. Article visualizations
INFLUENCE OF TEACHER-STUDENT RELATIONSHIPS ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF LEARNERS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES IN NAIROBI COUNTY, KENYA
This study aimed to examine the influence of teacher-student relationships on the academic performance of learners with learning disabilities in Nairobi County. Systems theory and Social Cognitive theories were adopted. A descriptive correlational research design was employed using a mixed research approach. The target population comprised 4 head teachers, 62 teachers, and 1,923 learners with learning disabilities from 4 regular primary schools in Nairobi City County. Stratified random sampling and simple random sampling were applied to select the four schools and respondents from each school respectively. A purposive sampling technique was utilized to choose the head teachers and teachers from each school. Questionnaires, focus group discussions, interview guides, and screening tools were used to gather data. Quantitative data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques, whereas qualitative was transcribed and qualitatively analyzed in a thematic approach. A correlation test was done on the hypotheses to ascertain the relation between independent variables and dependent variables at a statistical significance of p≤0.05 (p=5%) using Chi-square. Pearson product-moment correlation was computed to measure the strength of the association between predictors and children’s academic performance variables. Qualitative data analysis involved transcription and analysis of open-ended questions from research tools using thematic analysis. Findings showed that all proxies for the teacher-student relationship except dependency level had a significant p-value (p<0.05) at 95% Confidential Interval. Statistical statistics from chi-square the correlation between teacher-student relationships and learners’ academic performance was statistically significant the null hypothesis was rejected. The study concluded that teacher-student relationships result in improvement in learners’ academic performance. School policies have no significant relationship with learners’ academic performance in primary school schools in Nairobi City County. The study recommended that teachers should deliberately express concerns both about students’ academic and non-academic life, as this makes the learners with learning disabilities feel accepted and motivated to improve their academic work. READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY LEVELS OF FOURTH GRADE LEARNERS WITH DYSLEXIA IN NAIROBI AND KIAMBU COUNTIES, KENYA
This study aimed to investigate the reading comprehension abilities of fourth-grade learners with dyslexia in Nairobi and Kiambu Counties. Guided by Chall's model of reading development, the research targeted 1,040 fourth-grade students with dyslexia from public primary schools. Purposive sampling was used to select 32 special needs teachers, while simple random sampling identified 166 learners with dyslexia, yielding a total of 198 respondents. Data was collected using the Dyslexia Screen Test Junior (DST-J), document reviews, a classroom observation schedule, an interview schedule for teachers, and two comprehension tests. A pilot study was conducted in two special units, one in each county, to establish the reliability of the instruments, resulting in a Cronbach Alpha Coefficient of 0.82. Data was collected from special needs teachers of English and fourth-grade learners with dyslexia, along with a review of relevant academic documents. The collected data was categorized, coded, and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0, employing both qualitative and quantitative techniques. Quantitative data was analyzed through frequencies and percentages, presented in tables, while qualitative responses were thematically organized according to the research questions and objectives. The findings revealed substantial challenges in reading comprehension among the learners. A majority (68.1%) exhibited only a literal comprehension level and struggled with basic decoding, while only a small percentage achieved interpretive (24.8%), critical (5.7%), and creative (1.4%) levels. The study also noted that many learners read slowly and repetitively to grasp the text. It was concluded that the difficulties experienced by learners with dyslexia in reading fluency, memory, and comprehension significantly hindered their ability to achieve proficient levels of reading comprehension. The study recommended tailored interventions to enhance both decoding skills and comprehension strategies, aiming to improve reading performance for dyslexic learners. These results may guide stakeholders in the Ministry of Education in implementing targeted interventions and offer a foundation for future research on effective strategies for teaching reading comprehension to students with reading impairments. LA DÉMARCHE D’INVESTIGATION PEUT ÊTRE UNE PRATIQUE EFFICACE POUR ENSEIGNER LES CONCEPTS ABSTRAITS EN MÉCANIQUE : CAS DES CLASSES TERMINALES SCIENCES TECHNIQUES EN TUNISIE / THE INQUIRY BASED APPROACH CAN BE AN EFFECTIVE WAY OF TEACHING ABSTRACT CONCEPTS IN MECHANICS: THE CASE OF FINAL-YEAR TECHNICAL SCIENCE CLASSES IN TUNISIA
The investigative approach is an approach that increasingly asserts its potential in teaching. Indeed, it allows students to develop skills, attitudes and interests, necessary to live in a society increasingly dependent on the applications of science. In order to guarantee the successful application of the new programs and to improve the quality of teaching in class, we carried out an exploratory survey with teachers of 4th and 3rd technical sciences; we were able to conclude that To identify a functional condition or to trace the chain of dimensions relating to this condition on an overall drawing of a mechanism; to determine the functional dimensions and represent them on the part definition drawings based on the chain of dimensions; This represents a difficult learning of the concept of “functional dimensioning” in mechanics. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the different obstacles, and think about effective remediation, to overcome the difficulties in student learning. Thus, our research work consists of a comparative study between different learning situations using the investigation approach as a teaching practice and by exploiting new technologies to try to verify whether: (a) does computer simulation make it possible to overcome students' difficulties linked to erroneous conceptions of tracing coastlines and writing a tolerance rating? and (b) can computer simulation be a didactic aid to the teacher, to elucidate the morphology of the parts and their functionalities in a mechanism to learners? AN ASSESSMENT OF SOME THEORIES OF PUNISHMENT AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON CORPORAL PUNISHMENT’S USE AS A BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION STRATEGY
Theories explain the essence of the use of strategies in society. This review analyses the main theories that underpin the use of punishment as a behaviour modification strategy. Four main theories, namely the deterrent theory, incapacitation theory, compensation theory, and reformative theory, were reviewed and discussed in related literature to give an understanding of the use of punishment as a behaviour modification strategy in society. The discussion is concluded by drawing a linkage from the discussed theories with the use of corporal punishment in society. Recommendations are made in support of the use of alternative strategies rather than punishment in our current dispensation. Article visualizations
