CONSTRUCTING PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY: A NARRATIVE INQUIRY OF AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHER EDUCATOR IN INDONESIA

    Get PDF
Understanding how English language teacher educators construct their professional identity is crucial for developing effective and context-responsive teacher education programs. While academic qualifications and teaching experience are often seen as indicators of teacher quality, how these elements shape educators’ self-concept is still underexplored. This study explores how an English teacher educator in Indonesia develops his professional identity through long-term classroom practice, academic progression, and reflective engagement. Drawing on a narrative inquiry approach, data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically to find out key dimensions of identity development. Findings show that professional identity is not static, but it evolves through the interplay of sustained teaching experience, leadership roles, postgraduate education, and active participation in professional communities. The participant’s story highlights identity construction as a context-sensitive and lifelong process which is shaped by institutional roles, language use, and the needs of a multilingual teaching environment. This study emphasises the need for professional learning environments that go beyond credentials, promoting reflective practice, collaboration, and institutional support to nurture dynamic teacher identities.  Article visualizations

FINAL-YEAR ENGLISH-MAJORED STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS OF THE CONJUNCTIONS IN ESSAY WRITING AT NAM CAN THO UNIVERSITY, VIETNAM

    Get PDF
Academic writing has become an indispensable part for students studying English as a foreign language at universities in Vietnam in general. This descriptive study conducted a survey of 193 final-year English-majored students at Nam Can Tho University to analyze their perceptions of the use of conjunctions in academic essay writing. The results showed that although final-year English-majored students at Nam Can Tho University are highly aware of the importance of conjunctions in academic writing, their actual use is still inconsistent and sometimes inadequate. This concludes that students have a relatively high awareness of the important role of conjunctions in writing essays, but they still encounter many difficulties in applying them in practice, though. Recommendations for future writing instruction should incorporate explicit, contextual, and visually reflective approaches to help students develop both technical accuracy and rhetorical flexibility in the use of conjunctions in their writing. Only through such comprehensive pedagogical support can learners move beyond the difficulties of using conjunctions to sophisticated, reader-aware academic discourse.  Article visualizations

AN EVALUATION OF THE INFLUENCE OF CURRICULUM RELATED DOCUMENTS ON IMPLEMENTATION OF CBC IN MBEERE SOUTH SUB-COUNTY PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOLS

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of curriculum-related documents on the implementation of CBC in Mbeere South Sub-County pre-primary schools. The Curriculum Implementation Theory by Gross (1971) directed the correlational research design study. Purposive sampling was used to select Mbeere South Sub-county, while simple random sampling was used to sample 11% (28) pre-schools/head teachers out of 254 and 11% (56) pre-primary school 1 and 2 teachers (PP1 and PP2) out of 508, or 1 per class in the sampled pre-primary schools, where questionnaires, interviews and observation schedules were employed to collect data. Validity of the research instruments was ensured through aligning all the research content with the study objectives, while the split-half technique was used to determine their reliability and Cronbach’s Alpha was used to correlate the study items at a coefficient of 0.7. Qualitative data was analysed thematically through narratives, and descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages were used to summarise quantitative data, while Chi-square was employed to test the null hypothesis: H01: There is a significant relationship between the availability of curriculum-related documents and the implementation of CBC in preschools in Mbeere South Sub-county. The findings of the study were presented in graphs, charts and tables. The study findings revealed that curriculum-related documents, namely class timetables, pupil attendance registers, schemes of work, lesson plans, records of the work covered, pupil assessment registers, and those of their socio-emotional development, were not adequately maintained. Hence, the implementation of CBC with respect to the infusion of non-formal learning, the incorporation of modern and key issues in the learning process, and the conducting of formative as well as summative assessments were circumvented. Chi-square test results for H01 showed a statistically significant association between the availability of curriculum-related documents (p = .022 < .05) and the CBC implementation. The study thus concluded that the implementation of CBC was still below the expectation, which was attributed to infrequent use of class timetables, schemes of work, lesson plans and records of work. This study recommended that the Kenya Institute of Development should therefore intensify training for teachers to accelerate their capacity in terms of the appropriate use of teaching and learning resources, including the ICT course books and summative assessment.  Article visualizations

REFLECTING ON KANT’S AND FROMM’S MORAL AUTONOMY THROUGH AN ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP CURRICULUM

    Get PDF
Autonomy remains a key concept in contemporary philosophical and educational debates, especially within democratic contexts that seek to foster responsible, critically minded citizens. The central question addressed in this paper is how the philosophical concept of moral autonomy can be applied to pedagogical practice. To answer this question, the notion of moral autonomy is first examined. Drawing on the work of influential thinkers -most notably Immanuel Kant and Erich Fromm- the analysis traces how moral autonomy has been theorized as a central feature of human agency. It then shifts focus to the educational field, examining how such philosophical insights can be meaningfully translated into pedagogical practice. Particular attention is given to Greece’s recent initiative to embed the “Active Citizen Initiatives” curriculum into primary and secondary education (Ministerial Decision 130372/GD4, 01.11.2024). A curriculum emphasizing its relevance for shaping individuals capable of making ethical decisions based on internalized values rather than imposed norms. Given the above, this paper contributes to bridging the gap between theoretical philosophy and practical pedagogy by arguing that moral autonomy is not merely a theoretical ideal, but its principles can be actively cultivated in educational settings. By integrating philosophical reflection with educational policy and practice, this paper highlights the potential of school classrooms to serve as spaces where ethical autonomy becomes a lived and practiced dimension of democratic citizenship.  Article visualizations

KNOWLEDGE OF SCHOOL UNIT EDUCATION EXECUTIVES REGARDING THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

    Get PDF
The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) involves the integration of digital technologies, artificial intelligence, robotics, and other advanced systems into all aspects of society, including education. School principals, as key educational leaders, play a vital role in addressing both the challenges and the opportunities that 4IR presents. Their role is dynamic and continuously evolving as technology advances, making it essential for them to stay up to date with educational and technological developments. This study, part of a broader research project, aimed to explore the level of knowledge that educational executives (Principals, Deputy Principals, and Heads) across Greece possess about the 4IR. It sought to answer two main research questions: (a) To what extent do school leaders understand technologies related to the 4IR? (b) Do demographic factors such as gender, additional qualifications, or school level affect this knowledge? The study adopted a quantitative research method, using a structured questionnaire created via Google Forms. The questionnaire was distributed via email to public school directorates, including Kindergartens, Elementary Schools, Junior High Schools, and High Schools across Greece. It consisted of two parts: the first collected demographic information (gender, age, school level, years of service, and role), while the second assessed knowledge of 4IR technologies through thirteen statements rated on a four-point Likert scale (1 = Not at all, 4 = To a very great extent). Data collection took place between October and mid-November 2023, with 886 school leaders ultimately participating. In terms of demographics, 55.5% of respondents were women, 58.7% were aged 51–60, and 65.5% held postgraduate degrees. Participants included 25.1% Heads of Kindergartens, 37.2% Principals/Deputy Principals/Heads of Elementary Schools, and 37.7% Principals of Junior High and High Schools (Lyceums). Regarding 4IR knowledge, participants exhibited limited understanding of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, Augmented Reality, Big Data, and Blockchain (mean scores between 1.51 and 2.28). In contrast, they demonstrated greater familiarity with more commonly used tools and platforms, including Information and Communication Technology, Social Media, and Smart Boards (mean scores between 2.64 and 3.09). This suggests a disparity between exposure to foundational digital tools and comprehension of more advanced 4IR innovations. Statistically significant differences emerged based on demographics: men had more knowledge than women; individuals with higher educational qualifications (second degree, Master’s, or Doctorate) scored higher; and Heads of Kindergartens were less knowledgeable than Principals of Higher School levels. Additionally, school leaders with more years of service (11–20 years) had a better understanding of 4IR technologies than those with fewer years of experience. The findings suggest a need for targeted training and professional development in 4IR technologies for educational leaders, with an emphasis on strengthening educational leadership to meet the challenges of this new era.  Article visualizations

THE EDUCATION OF PRIMITIVE PEOPLE / Η ΑΓΩΓΗ ΤΩΝ ΠΡΩΤΟΓΟΝΩΝ ΑΝΘΡΩΠΩΝ

    No full text
Civilized man's nostalgia for returning to a "primitive" age seems to be as old as his civilized capacity for introspection. If the tendency towards primitiveness, which begins in ancient times and reaches the beginning of our century, creates in civilized man a dilemma that is increasingly internalized and agonizing, then we can say that this tendency remains undiminished even today. Education is the basic characteristic of humanity; it is the manifestation and energy which best characterizes mankind; it is the phenomenon which has enabled man to carry out his spiritual evolution and to ensure through the centuries the transmission to future generations of all the advances and achievements of previous generations. Over the past century, researchers have turned their attention to various peoples who had only just been discovered, forgotten, and isolated on the margins of civilizations or completely unknown to the rest of the known world. These people lived a natural life, without the special features of superior technological civilization. These were the people who lived isolated in various regions of Africa, Asia, America (Eskimos), and the islands of the Pacific Ocean (Oceania, Melanesia). From the findings of these people who were called primitives and from the recording of their perceptions, various theories about the origin of religion emerged. It is true that the life of primitive peoples has received special attention from the civilized, and many studies have been done on them.Η νοσταλγία του πολιτισμένου ανθρώπου για την επιστροφή σε μια “πρωτόγονη” εποχή φαίνεται να είναι τόσο παλιά όσο και η πολιτισμένη ικανότητά του για ενδοσκόπηση. Article visualizations

INCLUSIVE EDUCATION: ISSUES AND CHALLENGES OF PRE-SERVICE AND IN-SERVICE TEACHERS

    Get PDF
Inclusive Education advocates for equitable access to mainstream activities for all learners while using intentional and suitable methods to guarantee high-quality education for everyone. The present school system is progressively moving towards inclusivity. A crucial aspect in the successful inclusion of children with special needs is the attitude of both pre-service and in-service teachers toward integrating these students into their classrooms. This study aims to explore the perspectives of teachers on the integration of children with disabilities and to compare the attitudes of pre-service and in-service teachers toward inclusion. Further, it also seeks to mention some of the significant challenges that come across in classroom transactions and interviews with teachers. For the present study, a sample of 70 consisting of 35 pre-service and 35 in-service teachers has been taken from Tezpur city of Assam. In the present study, a standardized instrument titled the “Teacher Attitude Scale towards Inclusive Education,” developed by Dr. Vishal Sood and Dr. (Mrs.) Arti Anand was utilized to assess teachers' attitudes towards including special needs children. The results indicated that most teachers have positive views regarding the integration of children with special needs, and there were no notable variations in their attitudes. However, there exist significant challenges to implementing inclusion during classroom transactions. Henceforth, investigators have tried to highlight a few suggestions for the successful implementation of inclusion.  Article visualizations

BLENDED LEARNING IN ACCOUNTING EDUCATION: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF LEARNING THEORIES

    Get PDF
Learning theories reconstruct complex cognitive processes and provide useful mental models for the structure and design of courses. However, even for the most experienced professors, exploring them remains a challenge. Researchers around the world consider the development of theoretical models that contribute to the process of knowledge construction and experiential learning to be essential. In recent decades, there has been an increasing trend in the design of accounting courses through the integration of technology into traditional teaching. This has resulted in the emergence of new perspectives through the adoption of a blended teaching approach. This research deals with the investigation, analysis, and comparison of four fundamental learning theories: Behaviorism, Cognitivism, Constructivism, and Connectivism. Its contribution lies in the scientific documentation of the suitability of the theories that align with the needs within the framework of blended learning. The findings of the research are drawn from the literature review and the implementation of an experiment in an undergraduate accounting course. A blend of two theories emerged that align optimally in blended environments; specifically, the theories of constructivism with an emphasis on the social aspect and connectivism show a strong correlation, promoting student-centered teaching which increases student engagement by enhancing their knowledge and skills.  Article visualizations
