    Offside Politics During the Democratic Erosion: Social Movements and May 2023 Presidential Election Cycle in Turkey

    Turkoglu, Didem/0000-0001-6843-0232In this article, we demonstrate how social movements try to adjust to closing political opportunities during democratic erosion with a case study of the 2023 electoral cycle in Turkey. Using the framework of Doug McAdam and Sidney Tarrow's analysis of the reciprocal relationship between social movements and elections, we conclude that many previously influential movements found themselves offside as the political field and the rules of the game changed. The peculiarities of this case provide insights to social movement scholars to study changing structural factors in countries that experience democratic backsliding to various degrees. While anti-incumbent movements and parties react to democratic erosion/try to prevent it by becoming more active, the right-wing movements might strengthen these regimes through alliances.Social Science Citation Inde

    Hava Durumu Riskinin Yönetiminde İklim Türev Ürünleri: Avrupa Tipi Bir İklim Satım Opsiyonu Tasarımı ve Hedge Etkinliğinin Analizi

    Hava durumu riski, tüm ekonomileri ve birçok sektörü etkilemekte olan önemli bir risk türüdür. Hava durumu riskinin bir alt çeşidi olan katastrofik hava risklerinden doğan zararlar, uzun süredir bu sektörde hizmet vermekte olan sigorta ve reasürans şirketleri tarafından yönetilmektedir. Ancak iklim değişikliğine bağlı etkiler tüm ekonomik sektörleri etkileyerek daha belirgin hale geldikçe, katastrofik olmayan hava durumu risklerinin yönetimi de giderek önem kazanmıştır. İklim türev ürünleri, şirketlerin katastrofik olmayan hava durumu riskine maruz kalmaları durumunda karşılaşılan kayıplara karşı bu şirketlerinin kendilerini hedge etmesi için esnek çözümler sunan finansal türev ürünlerdir. İklim türev ürünleri üzerine gerçekleştirilen birçok çalışma bu ürünlerin fiyatlandırılması sorununa değinirken, bu ürünlerin hedge etkinliği üzerine az sayıda çalışma bulunmaktadır. Bu nedenle bu çalışmanın temel amacı, bir iklim türev ürün sözleşmesi tasarlamak ve tasarlanan bu türev sözleşmenin hedge etkinliğini Türkiye tarım sektöründe analiz etmektir. Buna göre çalışmada geçmiş verilerden hareketle mısır verimi (kg/dekar) ve daha çok tarım alanında kullanılan kümülatif büyüyen günler derecesi arasındaki ilişki incelenmiş, ardından buna uygun olarak Avrupa tipi bir satım opsiyonu tasarlanarak Burn Analizi ile fiyatlandırılmış ve son olarak varyans metodu kullanılarak hedge etkinliği analiz edilmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda elde edilen bulgulara göre, iklim türev ürünü kullanılması durumunda mısır yetiştiriciliği yapan çiftçilerin gelir volatiliteleri olarak hesaplanan riskleri %14 ile %34 arasında düşüş göstermekte, mısır verimi ve dayanak varlığın arasındaki korelasyon arttıkça çiftçilerin gelir volatilitelerindeki düşüş artmaktadır

    'Muge Anli ile Tatli Sert', which investigates unresolved criminal cases with interactive audience support, is one the most popular daytime television shows in contemporary Turkey. The neoliberal restructuring of the welfare system in New Turkey posits that providing protection and security against social risks is the sole responsibility of individuals and families. In line with this approach, the show individualizes social problems ready to be resolved by 'Muge Abla' (Sister Muge) and her audience. Muge Anli's image, which conforms to the ideal modern and modest Republican woman, allows her to gain authority, trust, respect, and popularity.     Synthesis of New Imidazo[1,2-A]pyridine Triazole Hybrid Molecules as Potential Apoptotic Antitumor Agents

After the characterization of the synthesized compounds, their in vitro therapeutic activities were evaluated in various cancer cell lines (MCF7, A549, HePG2 and T98G). Methoxy substituted derivative was identified as the most potent compound based on the results of its anti-proliferative activity on various cancer cell lines, as well as showing no cytotoxicity on the healthy human fibroblast cell line (MRC-5). As an indicator of apoptosis, a significant decrease in the level of PARP protein was observed in the MCF7 cells treated with this derivative. Molecular docking studies were conducted on wide range of targets such as phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), cyclin-independent kinase 2 (CDK2), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MEK), insulin-like growth-factor-1 (IGF-1), tubulin, DNA topoisomerase, poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) and B-cell lymphoma-2 (BCL2). All the compounds tested showed the lowest binding energies with target PARP1. Moreover, CDK2 and tubulin displayed relatively good binding scores. The docking poses and scores were cross-checked with two different software and multiple protein conformations were included to incorporate flexible protein docking features. Finally, drug-likeness properties of the compounds are further tested via Swiss-ADME software. Novel imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-1,2,3-triazole derivatives have been synthesized and evaluated for antiproliferative activity against MCF7, A549, HePG2, T98G cell lines. Compound 5c was found to be more potent on PARP protein in MCF7 cell line. The synthesized compounds were docked to PI3K, CDK2, MEK1, IGF-1, TUB1, DNA topoisomerase, PARP1, and BCL2. Today, this transportation industry (i.e., freight and passenger) is among the significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in Turkey's megacities. Moreover, 65.43% of short-distance trips between home to work and home to school have been made by private automobiles in Istanbul and increasing concerns about environmental pollution have led practitioners to seek practical, robust, and effective solutions to reduce GHG emissions. Shared electric scooters have rapidly become popular for end-users and practitioners in megacities, depending on their valuable advantages. However, the rapid spread of micro-mobility, characterized by escooters, has also raised questions about this system's sustainability, suitability, and applicability. Thus, there are some critical and noteworthy gaps in this issue. This study investigates the factors affecting the suitable e-scooter selection for a sustainable urban transport system. Besides, it aims to develop a methodological framework for assessing the available e-scooter alternatives. For this purpose, a novel negotiation approach, a new form of the Delphi technique, was developed with the help of Fermatean fuzzy sets to identify the influential criteria. Also, the current paper presents a consensus-based MULTIMOORA (Multiple Objective Optimization on the basis of Ratio Analysis plus Full Multiplicative Form) decision-making model based on Fermatean fuzzy sets to address the appraisal problem concerning e-scooter selection. The current paper indicated that economic measures such as acquisition price and upkeep costs affect the e-scooter selection processes. In addition, an optimization model based on cross-entropy and dispersion measures is utilized to compute criteria weights. It highlighted that the costs of e-scooters are still high, and operators consider these criteria instead of the technical and operational features of the e-scooters. Finally, the validity check executed to test the robustness and trustworthiness of the model affirms the model's firmness and trustworthiness.Science Citation Index Expande

    A Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Method for Thermal Insulation Material Selection in Nzeb Level Questioned Affordable Multifamily Housings

    Yilmaz, Yigit/0000-0001-8693-2789; Yilmaz, Burcu Cigdem/0000-0001-8786-4618An affordable multifamily housing building archetype project was researched to improve the building envelope's thermo-physical performance based on thermal insulation configurations to optimize the energy use, life-cycle cost, environmental impact, and thermal comfort with questioning nZEB concept. Five thermal insulation materials as extruded polystyrene (XPS), expanded polystyrene (EPS), rockwool (RW), glass wool (GW), and cellular glass (CG), were studied with four> attribute variations (thermal comfort, density, embodied carbon, and embodied energy) and five thickness variations (0.04, 0.08, 0.12, 0.16, 0.20 m). A total of 100 alternative scenarios> were obtained for the decision-making process, with four performance criteria to be evaluated in terms of energy, cost, thermal comfort, and environmental impact. Equal weights method (EWM), weighted sum method (WSM), and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) were examined for the multi-criteria decision-making among 46 scenariosvel. The analysis beyond the cost-optimal energy efficiency level, which varies between 64.89 and 72.62 kWh/m(2)a for primary energy use with a potential 10% further reduction, ensures the European Commission's recommendations that target 50-70 kWh/m(2)a of primary energy use for housings in the continental climate to achieve nZEB. The best scenarios cover significantly the XPS at the head due to lover investment costs, where RW, GW, and EPS are followed among the best 10 scenarios, respectively. Besides, AHP provides a more effective distribution of weighting factors than the WSM where the best scenarios of the AHP covers 12 cm thermal insulation alternatives by balancing the investment costs and energy efficiency levels. The paper provides insight into thermal insulation material selection while searching for the advantages and priorities of thermal insulation materials' attributes beyond the cost-optimal energy efficiency level to reach the nZEB range

    A Design Education and Application Center To Support Creative Industries

    As the importance of creative industries has become widespread, creative-cultural economy policies have become a priority area worldwide. In this context, this report describes a project planned and built to develop a model for platforms that would bring together public, private, and academic institutions. It describes how this model, designed to support research and design-based work in the field of interior design, was developed. The main motivation in this project is to become an important meeting point to feed creative industries' ecosystem in Istanbul with the education-workshop-incubation model. It also aims to supply an environment of interaction for academics, design centers, entrepreneurs, and students. After one and a half years, it has become a digital and physical meeting point for university-sector representatives. An effective knowledge and technology transfer network has been set up. A scientific research project has been written and approved. In this way, the center will start to become a place for interdisciplinary design research.
