The Limits of Cis Compassion: The sad trans experience and its others in contemporary Turkish theatre

    No full text
In the last decade, dramatic literature and theatre productions about trans women have become a significant part of Turkey's alternative theatre scene. These performances, pioneered by trans women, have been both celebrated and appropriated, with cis theatre makers often reshaping them within melodramatic conventions. Since the political ramifications of these theatrical productions are intricately linked to their narrative styles and genres, the employment of melodramatic portrayals presents emergent challenges for trans individuals, thereby culminating in a nuanced ‘transploitation’ of their narratives. While the melodramatic representations tell the stories of trans women's suffering and often end with the main character's death, the playwrights, actors, and the rest of the cast are almost always cisgender. Despite their popularity as well as aesthetic, social, and political significance, these plays have received limited scholarly attention. Moreover, the limited scholarship and public debates on them tend to treat their affective politics uncritically and even celebrate it. In the context of Turkey's liberal identity politics, these plays about trans women appear to challenge cis-heteropatriarchal oppression but ultimately reinforce cisnormative perspectives. In contrast, one-actor plays by transfeminist performers and playwrights challenge these melodramas. Characterized by themes of hope and resistance, transfeminist performances offer a contrast to mainstream portrayals of trans experience. These plays challenge the prevalent sadness in mainstream narratives about trans women, offering more empowering and representative portrayals. This juxtaposition sheds light on how sadness facilitates the experience of compassion, which both legitimizes and limits the performances about trans women

Weighted Feedback-Based Quantum Algorithm for Excited States Calculation

    No full text
Drawing inspiration from the Lyapunov control technique for quantum systems, feedback-based quantum algorithms have been proposed for calculating the ground states of Hamiltonians. In this work, we consider extending these algorithms to tackle calculating excited states. Inspired by the weighted subspace-search variational quantum eigensolver algorithm, we propose a novel weighted feedback-based quantum algorithm for excited state calculation. We show that depending on how we design the weights and the feedback law, we can prepare the pth excited state or lowest energy states up to the pth excited state. Through an application in quantum chemistry, we show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, evaluating its efficacy via numerical simulations.Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) [0136-00204B]This work was supported by Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF), project number 0136-00204B.Conference Proceedings Citation Index - Scienc

Hand Dominance and Congruence for Wrist-Worn Haptics Using Custom Voice-Coil Actuation

    No full text
Adeyemi, Ayoade/0009-0009-8162-394XDuring virtual interactions, rendering haptic feedback on a remote location (like the wrist) instead of the fingertips frees users' hands from mechanical devices. This allows for real interactions while still providing information about the mechanical properties of virtual objects. In this letter, we investigate the impact of using the dominant or non-dominant hand for virtual interactions and the best mapping between the active hand and the wrist receiving the haptic feedback, which can be defined as hand-wrist congruence through a user experiment based on a stiffness discrimination task. To render force feedback, we present CoWrHap - a novel wrist-worn haptic device with custom-made voice coil actuation. Our results show that participants performed the tasks (i) better with non-congruent mapping but reported better experiences with congruent mapping, and (ii) with no statistical difference in terms of hand dominance but with better user experience (enjoyment, pleasantness, etc.) using their dominant hands.TUB#x0130;TAK 2232-B International Fellowship for Early Stage Researchers ProgramNo Statement Availabl

Counterfactual Reconciliation: Incorporating Aggregation Constraints for More Accurate Causal Effect Estimates

    No full text
Tekguc, Hasan/0000-0002-3902-4486We extend the scope of the forecast reconciliation literature and use its tools in the context of causal inference. Researchers are interested in both the average treatment effect on the treated and treatment effect heterogeneity. We show that ex post correction of the counterfactual estimates using the aggregation constraints that stem from the hierarchical or grouped structure of the data is likely to yield more accurate estimates. Building on the geometric interpretation of forecast reconciliation, we provide additional insights into the exact factors determining the size of the accuracy improvement due to the reconciliation. We experiment with U.S. GDP and employment data. We find that the reconciled treatment effect estimates tend to be closer to the truth than the original (base) counterfactual estimates even in cases where the aggregation constraints are non-linear. Consistent with our theoretical expectations, improvement is greater when machine learning methods are used. (c) 2022 International Institute of Forecasters. Published by Elsevier B.V. Cognitive Reflection and Religiosity: a Test of Two Models

    No full text
It is argued that the evolved cognitive structure of humans forms an intuitive cognitive basis for religious beliefs. The Dual-process Model (DPM) of religious belief posits that individuals more prone to use reflection should show decreased religious belief. In line with that, previous research has consistently demonstrated a negative relationship between reflective thinking and religious belief. Another model, the Expressive Rationality Model (ERM), suggests that reflection serves an identity-protective function. Individuals who perceive a topic as relevant to their social identity might use reflection to reinforce their beliefs about that topic. Despite the substantial support for the DPM in current literature, previous studies have not recruited a sample of identity groups that are equally represented to test both the DPM and the ERM. In this study, we recruited a large number of both religious believers (n = 580) and non-believers (n = 594), who were all American adults, to overcome this limitation. We used various measures of cognitive reflection to test the predictions of both models, investigating the relationship between these measures and belief in God and disbelief in evolution. In our full sample, all measures of reflection were negatively correlated with religious belief and disbelief in evolution. However, when the sample was divided into believers and non-believers, some negative correlations were observed to be significantly weaker for believers, which supports the ERM. Overall, our results mainly support the DPM's explanation, and the predictions of the ERM also appear to be detectable in our sample

Aytekin, Ahmet/0000-0002-1536-7097; KORUCUK, SELÇUK/0000-0003-2471-1950Demand management in transportation services, as well as demand sustainability, demand planning, and demand implementation are critical components in service quality and environmental sustainability. It is evident that developing a transportation system, particularly one responsive to society's aspirations and demands, will result in long-term and sustainable success for enterprises. Transportation demand management and strategies can produce alternative perspectives at a desirable and sufficient level to handle problems in the field while considering the obstacles. Considering the elements influencing transportation demand management in logistics enterprises, this study aims to evaluate factors affecting transportation demand management and select the best strategy. The study was carried out on logistic firms with a corporate identity in the Turkish province of Samsun (Turkiye), engaged in international transportation activities to define the criteria affecting transportation demand management and select the best transportation demand strategy. The constituents from the literature review were analyzed using the q-rung orthopair fuzzy MCDA methodology. "Freight Transportation" was determined to be the most crucial measure affecting transportation demand management, while "Competition Legislation and Regulations Regulation" was the least important factor. The rapid expansion in the number of companies participating in freight transport and their capacity was evaluated as the essential aspect for the relevant logistics companies in transport demand management. The "Strategy for Prioritizing High Occupancy Vehicles" is the best transportation strategy based on the weights of the transportation demand management factors. Because of the implementation of this strategy in logistics organizations, this study is regarded as a significant indicator of competitiveness to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. The defined transport demand strategy also represents an exemplary model of the measures that need to be developed to increase the demand preference for sustainable transport

Assessing the Effectiveness of Ott Services, Branded Apps, and Gamified Loyalty Giveaways on Mobile Customer Churn in the Telecom Industry: a Machine-Learning Approach

    No full text
Kiygi-Calli, Meltem/0000-0002-2979-9309Telecom operators allocate a significant amount of resources to retain their customers as the organic growth in the number of customers is slowing down. Gamified loyalty programs, branded apps, and over-the-top (OTT) services emerged as ways to develop customer acquisition and retention strategies. Despite these strategies, some mobile customers still churn; therefore, churn prediction plays an essential role in the sustainable future of telecom businesses. Churn prediction is used both to detect customers with a high propensity to churn and to identify the reasons behind their churn behavior. This study examines several features affecting the churn behavior of mobile customers, including branded apps, gamified loyalty programs, and OTT services. In this study, the secondary data is provided by a telecom operator and contains the attributes of both churner and non-churner mobile customers. Logistic regression and random forest classifiers are compared in terms of their predictive power, and we used the latter as the machine learning algorithm in the churn prediction model. To understand the variable importance, mean decrease in impurity and permutation importance are performed. The key findings of this research reveal that while gamified loyalty giveaways and branded app strategies are effective, OTT service strategies show lower importance in predicting mobile customer churn behavior.Science Citation Index Expanded - Social Science Citation Inde

Reducing Consumer-Brand Incongruity Through Corporate Social Responsibility and Brand Trust: Exploring Negative Word-Of (nwom)

    No full text
Drawing upon consumer-brand disidentification theory and balance theory, this study examines symbolic and ideological incongruity in consumer-brand relationships through an original conceptual model shaped by negative past experiences, brand trust, perceived corporate social responsibility (CSR), and negative word-of-mouth (NWOM). A preliminary study was conducted to explore the dimensions of consumers' negative past experiences by topic detection. Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) topic modeling was undertaken to analyze online consumer reviews (n = 6095) about a coffee chain brand. The dimensions detected in this preliminary study were included in the research model and further analyzed in the main study. The main study, a cross-sectional consumer survey (n = 522), tested the original research model by way of partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) on SmartPLS. The findings showed that negative past experiences consisted of product-related, service-related, and technology-related problems and negatively influenced brand trust. It was found that brand trust and perceived CSR negatively affected symbolic and ideological incongruity, while symbolic and ideological incongruity positively influenced NWOM. The findings provide empirical evidence for balance theory by showing that the three critical domains of consumer-brand relationships (ideological, symbolic, and experiential) provide a complex cognitive model that covers personal-symbolic and moral-societal aspects of consumer-brand disidentification and consequent NWOM intentions. In line with consumer-brand disidentification theory, the results contribute to the literature by demonstrating the direct negative impacts of brand trust and perceived CSR on symbolic and ideological incongruity, as well as the direct positive impacts of symbolic and ideological incongruity on NWOM.Social Science Citation Inde
