Merging Grid Technology with Oil Fields Power Distribution: A Smart Grid Approach
Kayalica, M. Ozgur/0000-0001-9828-7385This study explores how grid technology can help improve oil fields' power distribution using a fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making approach. The study compares different grid technologies based on multiple criteria, such as technical feasibility, economic viability, environmental impact, social acceptance, and regulatory compliance. The fuzzy TOPSIS method is used because it can effectively handle both crisp and fuzzy data, as well as linguistic and numerical values. After obtaining a ranking of alternatives, the study also conducts a sensitivity analysis and a robustness check to validate the results. The results show that the hybrid grid is the most preferred option for oil fields' power distribution, followed by the smart grid, themicrogrid, the nano grid, and the conventional grid. This implies that integrating different grid technologies can provide more benefits and advantages than using a single grid technology. The study provides some implications and recommendations for oil fields to adopt or integrate different grid technologies to enhance their power systems and operations.Conference Proceedings Citation Index - Scienc
Chatter Stability of Orthogonal Turn-Milling Process in Frequency and Discrete-Time Domains
As the industry seeks better quality and efficiency, multitasking machine tools are becoming increasingly popular owing to their ability to create complex parts in one setup. Turn-milling, a type of multi-axis machining, combines milling and turning processes to remove material through simultaneous rotations of the cutter and workpiece with the translational feed of the tool. While turn-milling can be advantageous for large parts made of hard-to-cut materials, it also offers challenges in terms of surface form errors and process stability. Because tool eccentricity and workpiece rotation lead to more complexity in process mechanics and dynamics, traditional milling stability models cannot predict the stability of turn-milling processes. This study presents a mathematical model based on process mechanics and dynamics by incorporating the unique characteristics of the orthogonal turn-milling process to avoid self-excited chatter vibrations. A novel approach was employed to model time-varying delays considering the simultaneous rotation of the tool and workpiece. Stability analysis of the system was performed in both the discrete-time and frequency domains. The effects of eccentricity and workpiece speed on stability diagrams were demonstrated and validated through experiments. The results show that the tool eccentricity and workpiece speed alter the engagement geometry and delay in the regeneration mechanism, respectively, leading to significant stability diagram alterations. Aesthetic Approach for Critical Sociology of Contemporary Communication Technology
Arda, Balca/0000-0002-3793-2472Critical theory has already marked that technology often threatens civil liberties, personal autonomy, and rights. Heidegger, later Marcuse, emphasized how technology is not value-free in its own revealing power of the surrounding environment, external and inner nature. Throughout this paper, I explore how the aesthetic approach engages with critical theory and contributes to the sociology of media and communication. For this, I will theoretically survey the terms of sociality under the forces of immediate communication, ubiquitous surveillance, and the compression of time and space that Baudrillard and Virilio once problematized through the lens of critical technology theory to adapt it to media and communication studies. I contend that techno-aesthetics that converge with Ranciere's dissensus can provide practical suggestions on an updated vocation of critical sociology. This article discusses the potential of aesthetic and social criticism of media for democratizing technology that Feenberg inserted. It is urgent to acknowledge the changing spatio-temporal aesthetic regimes that affect the societal imagination and limits of sociality and action to determine the next steps for achieving a commons-based society
Acceptable 'expats Versus Unwanted 'arabs Tracing Hierarchies Through Everyday Urban Practices of Skilled Migrant Women in Istanbul
Tuncer, Ezgi/0000-0003-0755-6311This article focuses on ethnic hierarchies found within highly educated migrant women working in Istanbul traced through their everyday urban practices. It introduces the stratified and comparative results of migration and resettlement of those from the Global North and the Global South through a comprehensive analysis on their urban lives, including their social positionings, preferences of neighbourhoods and daily patterns of their use of the city. Contrary to the common conception that skilled migrants are privileged, our research reveals inequalities and discriminatory practices they face that intersect with gender, nationality and ethnicity. Our research, based on qualitative analyses of in-depth interviews along with online subjective mapping representing use of the city, also reveals that regardless of their origin and identity, almost all our participants experience verbal/physical sexual harassment or discrimination in public space in Istanbul, which forces women to produce spatial tactics of everyday life
A Robust Microservices Framework for Indoor Tracking System Development
The demand for indoor tracking systems is steadily increasing across various applications. While GPS is effective for outdoor localization, indoor localization presents distinct challenges related to hardware, algorithms, architecture, and infrastructure. Many researchers have focused on developing algorithms or hardware solutions to address these challenges. In response, we designed and implemented a robust, innovative framework utilizing microservices to achieve a scalable, fault-tolerant, flexible, and multi-platform indoor localization system. Our system employs RFID hardware for tracking, with data storage managed by a PostgreSQL database. The architecture incorporates RabbitMQ and the Spring framework, utilizing the Java programming language. The proposed framework was tested using a graphical user interface (GUI) within a metallic underground mine, demonstrating scalability by successfully deploying 7 and 22 RFID readers. The system supports development across various platforms, including web, desktop, and mobile, and is compatible with Mac, Linux, and Windows operating systems. The tracking accuracy was measured at 5.12 meters within a 300-meter metallic mining gallery. Overall, the microservices-based framework proved highly suitable for indoor tracking systems. © 2024 IEEE
How do you manage? An auto-ethnographic inquiry into contemporary maternal labor
Balic, Ilkay/0000-0003-3489-5474PurposeThis article tackles the intersection of mothering and labor through the author's own experience as a feminist mother/manager from Istanbul, Turkey. It aims to revisit the first years of motherhood, exploring the struggle to invent a peculiar maternal subjectivity in opposition and negotiation with the patriarchal institution of motherhood, the new definition of maternal labor in a highly digital, neoliberal context and the issue of marital fairness in a dual-income heterosexual marriage.Design/methodology/approachThe article presents an autoethnographic, retrospective and introspective inquiry into the first seven years of the author's mothering experience in order to offer an in-depth exploration of the various aspects of contemporary maternal labor.FindingsThe article shows how maternal labor has shifted in nature and expanded in scope in a contemporary non-Western context. It investigates the dissolution of the spatial, temporal and sensorial boundaries between the managerial labor dedicated to the workplace, and to the family. Employee Retention in New Ventures: Employee Perspective
Çalışan değişimi, yeni kurulan girişimlerin sürdürülebilir büyümesini engelleyen kritik bir zorluktur. Ülkedeki bir start-up merkezi statüsüne rağmen Hindistan'ın Bengaluru kentindeki start-up girişimlerinin karşılaştığı çalışanları elde tutma sorununa katkıda bulunan spesifik faktörler hakkında sınırlı sayıda araştırma bulunmaktadır. Bu çalışma, dinamik start-up ekosistemindeki çalışanların işten ayrılma niyetlerini etkileyen çeşitli faktörleri incelemiştir. Kalitatif ve kantitatif verilere dayalı karma metod kullanılmıştır. Kantitatif araştırma ile, 50 çalışanı kapsayan bir anket yapılmıştır. Niteliksel içgörüler için ise Bengaluru merkezli çeşitli start-up'larda çalışan beş çalışanla yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Analiz sonuçları, iş-yaşam dengesinin, liderlik desteğinin ve kariyer geliştirme fırsatlarının, çalışanların işten ayrılma niyetinin temel belirleyicileri olduğunu ve bunun da yeni kurulan şirketlerde kalma oranını (çalışan elde tutma oranını) etkilediğini ortaya çıkarmıştır. İş arkadaşı desteğinin olumlu bir çalışma ortamını teşvik ettiği ve elde tutmaya katkıda bulunabileceği bulunmuş, ancak bu iki değişken arasında arasında güçlü bir korelasyon tespit edilememiştir. Çalışanlar arasında girişimcilik istekliliğinin yaygın olduğu ancak bu durumun cironun ana itici gücü olarak tanımlanmadığı saptanmıştır. Start-up'ların sunduğu kariyer geliştirme fırsatlarına erişim fırsatları çalışanlar tarafından takdirle karşılanmaktadır. Niteliksel bulgular, iş güvenliği kaygılarını, üst yönetimin desteğinin eksikliğini ve alt düzey çalışanlarla etkileşim eksikliğinin ana kaygılar olduğunu göstermiştir. Bunlara ek olarak, çalışanlar, geri bildirimi, gelişmiş iletişimi ve şeffaf hiyerarşik sistemi önemli görmektedir. Bu bulgulara dayanarak çalışma, Bengaluru'daki start-up'ların iş-yaşam dengesine öncelik vermesini, daha güçlü liderlik desteği sağlamasını, daha iyi kariyer geliştirme yolları sunmasını, destekleyici ve işbirlikçi bir çalışma ortamı geliştirmesini önermektedir. Bu sayede, çalışanın duygusal, psikolojik ve profesyonel refahı sağlanabilir ve çalışanların elde tutulması sağlanabilir. Bengaluru start-up'ları, bu faktörleri ele alarak, sonuçta firmalarının başarısına katkıda bulunacak yetenekli ve sadık iş gücünü ellerinde tutabilecektir.Employee turnover is a critical challenge hindering the sustained growth of the start-up ventures. There exists a limited research on the specific factor contributing to the employee retention challenge faced by the start-up ventures in Bengaluru, India, despite its status as a start-up hub in the country. The present research investigated the various factors that have an influence on turnover intentions of an employee in the dynamic start-up ecosystem. A dual research plan was used, employing the qualitative and quantitative data collection. For latter approach, survey was conducted encompassing 50 employees. For qualitative insights, semi structured interviews with five employees working in various Bengaluru based start-ups were conducted. Data analysis revealed that work-life balance, leadership support and career development opportunities were key predictors of employee turnover intentions, which in-turn affected retention in the start-ups. Co-worker support was found to foster a positive work environment and it might contribute to retention. However no strong correlation was found between the two. Entrepreneurial aspirations were prevalent among the employees but they were not identified as major drivers for turnover. The access to career development opportunities within the start-ups was appreciated by the employees. The qualitative findings highlighted job security anxieties, lack of support from top management and lack of interaction with low level employees as major concerns. The employees also underlined the importance of feedback, improved communication and transparent hierarchical system. Based on these findings, the study recommends that start-ups in Bengaluru prioritize work-life balance, provide stronger leadership support, offer better career development pathways, cultivate supportive and collaborative work environment. This will ensure emotional, psychological and professional well-being of an employee that would in turn have a positive impact on retention. By addressing these factors, Bengaluru start-ups can retain talented and loyal workforce that would ultimately contribute to the success of their organization
Mapping Geothermal Indicator Minerals Using Fusion of Target Detection Algorithms
duzgun, sebnem/0000-0001-7013-9241; Demir, Ebubekir/0000-0002-1680-3719Mineral mapping from satellite images provides valuable insights into subsurface mineral alteration for geothermal exploration. In previous studies, eight fundamental algorithms were used for mineral mapping utilizing USGS spectra, a collection of reflectance spectra containing samples of minerals, rocks, and soils created by the USGS. We used an ASD FieldSpec 4 Hi-RES NG portable spectrometer to collect spectra for analyzing ASTER images of the Coso Geothermal Field. Then, we established the ground-truth information and the spectral library by analyzing 97 samples. Samples collected from the field were analyzed using the CSIRO TSG (The Spectral Geologist of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization). Based on the mineralogy study, multiple high-purity spectra of geothermal alteration minerals were selected from collected data, including alunite, chalcedony, hematite, kaolinite, and opal. Eight mineral spectral target detection algorithms were applied to the preprocessed satellite data with a proposed local spectral library. We measured the highest overall accuracy of 87% for alunite, 95% for opal, 83% for chalcedony, 60% for hematite, and 96% for kaolinite out of these eight algorithms. Three, four, five, and eight algorithms were fused to extract mineral alteration with the obtained target detection results. The results prove that the fusion of algorithms gives better results than using individual ones. In conclusion, this paper discusses the significance of evaluating different mapping algorithms. Fellini and Turkey: Influence and Image
Like many great artists, Federico Fellini used his fertile cultural context in his films, reflecting it onscreen with a great deal of originality and elegance. He is known for exhibiting a sensibility open to the universal, or at least the broadly transnational, while engaging intensely with his own subjectivity and with the cultures and dialects specific to Italy. Turkish cinema had been influenced by many cinema movements, but perhaps the most noteworthy one was Italian neorealism. Particularly after the1950s, important filmmakers were involved in the creation of a national cinema, and by following the model of Italian neorealism, they formed a short-lived, politically engaged “social realism” movement between 1960 and 1965. However, beginning in the late 1980s when filmmakers decided to make more individual, auteurist, and alternative films, and continuing with the next generation of filmmakers, the transformation of Turkish cinema culture invites us to investigate to what extent Turkish cinema interacted with Fellini. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd. An Energy-Aware Resource Management Strategy Based on Spark and YARN in Heterogeneous Environments

Running Spark on Hadoop YARN allows it to schedule Spark workloads alongside other data-processing frameworks on Hadoop. When an application is deployed in a YARN cluster, its resources are given without considering energy efficiency. Furthermore, there is no way to enforce any user-specified deadline constraints. To address these issues, we propose a new deadline-aware resource management system and a scheduling algorithm to minimize the total energy consumption in Spark on YARN for heterogeneous clusters. First, a deadline-aware energy-efficient model for the considered problem is proposed. Then, using a locality-aware method, executors are assigned to applications. This algorithm sorts the nodes based on the performance per watt (PPW) metric, the number of application data blocks on nodes, and the rack locality. It also offers three ways to choose executors from different machines: greedy, random, and Pareto-based. Finally, the proposed heuristic task scheduler schedules tasks on executors to minimize total energy and tardiness. We evaluated the performance of the suggested algorithm regarding energy efficiency and satisfying the Service Level Agreement (SLA). The results showed that the method outperforms the popular algorithms regarding energy consumption and meeting deadlines
