It has been historically significant in traditional medicine. In our research, we delved into the therapeutic attributes of its oil, emphasizing its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antitumor properties. The primary chemical constituent of the gum is styrene, accounting for 78.5 %. The gum demonstrated antioxidant capabilities in several assays, including in 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2 '-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). It displayed bactericidal actions against various gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, and gram-negative strains, including Escherichia coli. Additionally, the oil showcased potent antitumor effects against breast (MDA-MB-231), lung (A549), and prostate (PC3) cancer cell lines. These effects were found to be both time- and dose-dependent. L. orientalis Mill. oil showed the best antitumor activity against breast, lung, and prostate cancer cell lines after the 24 h and 48 h treatment. Its oil might induce autophagy in the PC3 prostate cancer cell line, whereas its cytotoxicity against MDA-MB-231 and A549 cancer cell lines might not be correlated with autophagy or apoptosis pathways. In conclusion, the oil from the Sigla tree offers promising therapeutic potential and warrants further exploration.Science Citation Index Expande

Multifractal Spin-Glass Chaos Projection and Interrelation of Multicultural Music and Brain Signals

    No full text
A complexity classification scheme is developed from the fractal spectra of spin-glass chaos and demonstrated with multigeographic multicultural music and brain electroencephalogram signals. Systematic patterns are found to emerge. Chaos under scale change is the essence of spin-glass ordering and can be obtained, contin-uously tailor-made, from the exact renormalization-group solution of Ising models on frustrated hierarchical lattices. The music pieces are from genres of Turkish music, namely Arabesque, Rap, Pop, Classical, and genres of Western music, namely Blues, Jazz, Pop, Classical. A surprising group defection occurs.Kadir Has Uni-versity Doctoral Studies Scholarship Fund; Academy of Sciences of Turkey [TUBA]We thank Ratip Emin Berker, Selim Berker, and Deniz Ero?lu for very useful discussions and comments.

    No full text
Antifouling paints are used to protect the surface against these organisms such as algae, sea squirts, and barnacles. According to previous research, fish and seaweeds do not adhere to submerged surfaces using wet and soft hydrogels. The aim of this study is to investigate the temperature effect on the performance of antifouling composites to develop new useful antifouling composites for shipping sector. In this swelling experiment, the behavior of hydrogels produced from polyacrylamide (PAAm) and graphene oxide (GO) was investigated at different temperatures. Free-radical cross-linking copolymerization formed composite, using acrylamide, ammonium persulfate, N, N & PRIME;-methylenebisacrylamide (BIS, Merck), and graphene oxide with various contents. The steady-state fluorescence technique was used for studying the swelling of PAAm-GO composites at various temperatures in pure water. When pyranine fluorescence intensity, I was measured, it decreased until swelling equilibrium was achieved. After the swelling experiment was started, the fluorescence emission (I-em) and scattering light intensities, I-sc from different GO content hydrogels were observed by real-time monitoring at various temperatures. Li-Tanaka and Fickian models were used to determine the diffusion coefficients for the swelling experiments in distilled and Marmara Sea Water for 8 and 50 mu l of GO content hydrogels, respectively. According to literature, PAAm is utilized as a surface coating material to reduce biofouling, for this reason, this research will show a way to be able to use PAAm inside antifouling paints material for the marine industry

A Framework To Forecast Electricity Consumption of Meters Using Automated Ranking and Data Preprocessing

    No full text
Forecasting electricity consumption is crucial for the operation planning of distribution companies and suppliers and for the success of deregulated electricity markets as a whole. Distribution companies often need consumption forecasting for meters to better plan operations and demand fulfillment. Although it is easier to forecast the aggregated demand for a region, meter based demand forecasting brings challenging issues such as non-uniform usage and uncertain customer consumption patterns. The stochastic nature of the demand for electricity, along with parameters such as temperature, humidity, and work habits, eventually causes deviations from the expected demand. In this paper, real meter data from a regional distribution company is used to cluster the customer using their non-uniform usage and automated ranking mechanism is proposed to select the best method to forecast the consumption. The proposed end-to-end methodology includes data processing, missing value detection and filling, abnormal value detection, and mass reading for meters and is applied to regional data for the period 2017-2018 and provides a powerful tool to forecasts the demand in hourly and daily horizons using only the past demand data. Besides proposing effective methodologies for data preprocessing, 10 different regression methods, 7 regressors, 5 machine learning methods that include LSTM and Ar-net models are used to forecast the meter based consumption. The hourly forecasting errors in the demand, in the Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) norm, are <4% for most customer groups. The meter based forecast is then aggregated to reach a final demand which is then used for operation and demand planning. The proposed framework can be considered reliable and practical in the circumstances needed to make demand and operation decisions. © 2023, Econjournals. Epidemic Models for Chemical Gel Phase Transformation: Effect of Optical Measurements With Different Wavelengths

    No full text
In our previous work we characterized the sol-gel transition of chemical and physical gels in terms of epidemic models which describe the spread of a disease in a society. We have shown that gelation in chemical gels can be represented by the Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) model, while the gelation mechanism of physical gels can be represented by the Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) model. These studies were based on optical measurements at a single wavelength. In the present work we studied the gelation mechanism for chemical gels obtained from experiments that have been carried out with acrylamide (AAm) and N,N0-methylenebis (acrylamide) (Bis) as base materials for chemical gel formation in water and with cross-linker. The transmitted light intensity was measured for various wavelengths from 440 nm to 690 nm during the gelation process. The data are modeled by the epidemic SIR process. The results indicate that the gelation processes obtained from the same Bis and water contents observed at different wavelengths obey different SIR models. This observation is explained by the scattering of light of different wavelengths depending on the sizes of the micro-gels formed

Screening of Novel and Selective Inhibitors for Neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase (nnos) Via Structure-Based Drug Design Techniques

    No full text
Boumezber, Sarah/0000-0002-3613-4217; Yelekci, Kemal/0000-0002-0052-4926NO, or nitric oxide, is produced by a family of enzymes called nitric oxide synthase (NOS) from L-arginine. NO regulates many physiological functions such as smooth muscle relaxation, immune defense, and memory function. The overproduction of NO by the neuronal isoform of nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) is implicated in neurodegeneration and neuropathic pain, making nNOS inhibition a promising therapeutic approach. Many developed nNOS inhibitors, generally L-arginine mimetics, have some issues in selectivity and bioavailability. According to earlier studies, targeting nNOS has the advantage of decreasing excess NO in the brain while avoiding the negative consequences of inhibiting the two isozymes: endothelial NOS (eNOS) and inducible NOS (iNOS). This study applied structure-based virtual screening, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulations to design potent and selective inhibitors against nNOS over related isoforms (eNOS and iNOS) using human X-ray crystal structures of the NOS isoforms. It was discovered that some compounds displayed a very good inhibitory potency for hnNOS and moderate selectivity for the other isozymes, eNOS and iNOS, in addition to good solubility and desirable physiochemical properties. The compounds which showed good stability and selectivity with nNOS, such as ZINC000013485422, can be interesting and informative guidance for designing more potent human nNOS inhibitors. Reconstructing Network Dynamics of Coupled Discrete Chaotic Units From Data

    No full text
Reconstructing network dynamics from data is crucial for predicting the changes in the dynamics of complex systems such as neuron networks; however, previous research has shown that the reconstruction is possible under strong constraints such as the need for lengthy data or small system size. Here, we present a recovery scheme blending theoretical model reduction and sparse recovery to identify the governing equations and the interactions of weakly coupled chaotic maps on complex networks, easing unrealistic constraints for real-world applications. Learning dynamics and connectivity lead to detecting critical transitions for parameter changes. We apply our technique to realistic neuronal systems with and without noise on a real mouse neocortex and artificial networks.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) [118C236]; BAGEP Award of the Science AcademyWe are indebted to Tiago Pereira, Matteo Tanzi, Sajjad Bakrani, Arash Rezaeinazhad, Thomas Peron, and Jeroen Lamb for enlightening discussions.
