Toward a Green Income Support Policy: Investigating Social and Fiscal Alternatives for Turkey
The limited success of employment-based social protection measures under the diverging patterns of post-COVID-19 recovery rekindled interest in a social policy framework known as the Basic Income (BI) support. We test the potential of the BI program using five alternative scenarios ranging from households with income less than half of median income to all adults with estimates of their respective fiscal costs. We then employ an applied general equilibrium model to analyze the economy-wide effects and welfare implications for Turkey in the long run through 2030. We evaluate the macroeconomic and welfare effects of both a business-as-usual fiscal program and an alternative (green BI scenario) comprising of (i) carbon tax levied on the fossil fuel producing industry; (ii) corporate income taxation policy reform that aims at expanding the revenue base and consolidation of the fiscal space of the government; and (iii) restructuring of public consumption expenditures by introducing rationality and efficiency in the structure of fiscal expenditures. Our model solutions reveal that a green BI scenario not only achieves a higher GDP and welfare in the medium to long run but also helps Turkey to reduce its carbon emissions in line with the global policy challenges of a green recovery
Men, Masculinities and Military Organizations
Militaries and militarism are among the most obviously gendered of all organizational activities. The military is also one of the clearest arenas of social power, violence and killing in their many guises. Military matters are urgent, powerful and lethal. The ways armies and those in them are organized and act are literally questions of life and death for all concerned. This chapter brings together studies on men and masculinities with those in the military and military organizations. Men, militarism and the military are historically, profoundly and blatantly interconnected. These interconnections have often either been simply accepted or it has gone unnoticed that these military persons are largely men. Indeed, many, though not all, armies and other fighting forces of the world have been and still are armies composed mainly of men, young men and boys. Those engaged in active combat and direct fighting in wars are often young men and boys. In the chapter, we address the place of men and masculinities in some key organizational issues in military organization and militarism, most notably recruitment, hierarchies and segregations, disability and veterans, and the impacts of these organizations on civilians, before concluding remarks on wider processes and impacts, on research, scientific and technological organizations, on international relations and geopolitics, and on the environment. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Jeff Hearn, Kadri Aavik, David L. The Relationship Between Kama Muta and Secondary Strategies of the Caregiving Behavioral System
The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between caregiving behavioral systems' secondary strategies and the experience of kama muta. In various relationships, such as parent-child interactions or romantic partnerships established in daily life, individuals can exhibit caregiving behaviors towards each other. One of the many variables that may be associated with the emergence of these behaviors is emotions. Considering the connection of kama muta emotion, which has recently been investigated in the literature and is defined as experiencing intense communal sharing, with concepts such as helping behavior and altruistic behavior, it was hypothesized that individuals' caregiving behavioral strategies would be associated with these factors. It was suggested that the hyperactivation strategy, defined as showing a strong tendency to engage in caregiving behaviors even in the absence of a need, one of the secondary strategies of caregiving, might be associated with the intensification of communal sharing that gives rise to the experience of kama muta emotion. Therefore individuals' levels of experiencing kama muta emotion would predict their tendencies to use the hyperactivation strategy when controlling for age, gender, romantic relationship status, and having children. We registered our hypotheses for this thesis. Alongside demographic information of 533 participants, data on their positive and negative affect, frequency of experiencing kama muta, and secondary strategies of caregiving were collected through self-report questionnaires administered via the online platform Qualtrics. The hierarchical regression analysis revealed that, when controlling for age, gender, romantic relationship status, and having children, individuals' tendencies to experience kama muta emotion predicted their tendencies to use the hyperactivation strategy. Relationships between other variables and the deactivation strategy were also examined, and the study's contributions to the literature, limitations, and suggestions for future research were discussed in light of the study's findings
Exploring the Benefits of Data Augmentation in Math Word Problem Solving
OpenCEMS - Connected Environment and Distributed Energy Data Management SolutionsMath Word Problem (MWP) is a challenging Natural Language Processing (NLP) task. Existing MWP solvers have shown that current models need to generalize better and obtain higher performances. In this study, we aim to enrich existing MWP datasets with high-quality data, which may improve MWP solvers' performances. We propose several data augmentation methods by applying minor modifications to the problem texts and equations of English MWPs datasets which contain equations with one unknown. Extensive experiments on two MWPs datasets have shown that data created by augmented methods have considerably improved performance. Moreover, further increasing the training samples by combining the samples generated by the proposed augmentation methods provides further performance improvements. © 2023 IEEE.Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu, TÜBİTAK, (120E100
50. Complete acquisition in the heritage language: Evidence from indefiniteness in Turkish
This study investigates whether adult Turkish heritage speakers are able to refer to entities in discourse as required by semantic contexts. The focus is on the contrasting properties of Turkish (L1) and German (L2) with respect to semantics of indefiniteness, i.e., specificity and partitivity. Turkish morphologically distinguishes between specific/nonspecific and partitive/nonpartitive contexts on the indefinite direct object while German does not. We hypothesized that the Turkish heritage speakers would overgeneralize the unmarked form (bir noun) since this is the default form used in German regardless of the context and also acceptable in all contexts in Turkish. We further hypothesized that, if they ever opt for the case marked form (bir noun+acc), they would also do so incorrectly in nonpartitive and nonspecific contexts. Turkish heritage speakers living in Germany (n= 35) could dissociate semantic contexts and made similar preferences to those of monolingual native speakers of Turkish (n= 30). Our findings suggest that native language (L1) can develop despite early onset of the L2 and be maintained on a par with monolingual norms despite the presence of competing structures in the L2. We will discuss how insights from heritage language development can contribute to discussions about the bilingual’s ability in L1; and limits and possibilities of bilingualism
Enhancing Robotic Performance: Analyzing Force and Torque Measurements for Predicting Execution Failures
Robots play an important role in many sectors, automating processes and supplementing human talents. However, guaranteeing reliability is critical for effective integration and widespread adoption. As a result, forecasting and managing these errors is critical. This research examines force and torque measurements in order to better understand the causes and patterns of robot execution errors. We hope to build prediction models that improve robot design and performance, eventually boosting their reliability and efficacy, by using data analysis and machine learning approaches. This study's research aims include using a dataset of force and torque measurements to predict and define robot execution failures, We hope to uncover the complex links between force and torque measurements and failure types, find crucial signals or precursors to failures, and construct strong prediction models for correct failure categorization by tackling these research topics. This study contributes to data science by demonstrating the use of analytics approaches to improve the dependability and performance of robots in real-world scenarios. © 2023 IEEE

Sorafenib is one of many VEGFR-2 inhibitors that have received approval for clinical use from the US FDA in recent years. Accordingly, in this study, the synthesis of two new pyrazoles, six 1,3,4-oxadiazoles, four 1,3,4-thiadiazoles, and ten 1,2,4-triazole-3-thione derivatives having structural characteristics similar to sorafenib was carried out. A preliminary screening of synthesized compounds and known inhibitors sorafenib and staurosporine at 10 mu M concentration on in vitro activity of VEGFR-2 was performed, and compounds 10c, 8a, and 11 g were identified as the most potent derivatives with% VEGFR-2 residual activities lower than 30%, and dose-dependent inhibition studies was carried out to determine the IC50 values of these inhibitors. Compound 10c was found to be the most potent inhibitor of VEGFR-2 activity with an IC50 value of 0.664 mu M. The anti-proliferative activity of synthesized derivatives was assessed against a breast carcinoma (MCF-7) cell line, a triple negative human breast adenocarcinoma (MDA-MB-231) cell line, and noncancerous fibroblast cells (L929). Compound 8a displayed superior activity when compared to sorafenib against MCF-7 (7.69 fold) and MDA-MB-231 (1.52 fold) cell lines while displaying 3.75-fold less toxicity against the normal L929 cell line. Annexin V binding assay revealed that compound 8a significantly increased early and late apoptosis in MCF-7 cells and late apoptosis and necrosis in MDA-MB-231 cells. Computational studies such as molecular docking and ADMET evaluation were performed to elucidate the binding interactions and druglikeness of the synthesized compounds. The results indicate that compound 8a could be a promising candidate for the development of a novel anti-angiogenic and anti-proliferative agent.Marmara University Scientific ResearchThis work was supported by Marmara University Scientific ResearchScience Citation Index Expande
Arthouse Cinema Experience And Changing Practices: A Case Study On Kadıköy Cinema
Today, the term "arthouse" refers to an area whose definition is quite vague and whose boundaries are unclear. The field, which is generally considered to appeal to a "niche" audience, brings with it a slight "snobbery" according to Bordwell. Perhaps this is partly why arthouse cinema has always had to create its own alternative spaces and create its own institutions in a struggle for survival. Kadıköy Sineması serves as a unique space in Istanbul's cinema life in the sense that the theater's film selection consists entirely of arthouse and independent films. This thesis explores the cinema experience and changing practices within the context of the Kadıköy Cinema, employing the theoretical framework of Bourdieu's habitus-capital-field relations, and utilizing "New Cinema History" as a conceptual tool. By focusing on Kadıköy Cinema as a case study, the research aims to comprehend the dynamics of the arthouse audience and the arthouse scene in Istanbul. It should not be forgotten that cinema is not only a means of entertainment, but also a social and cultural institution that reflects and shapes social values, tastes and practices. The application of Bourdieu's habitus-capital-field relations offers a theoretical framework to understand the interplay between cultural practices and social structures within the arthouse scene. The findings of this research provide valuable insights into the cinema experience and changing practices in Kadıköy, highlighting the role of arthouse cinemas in fostering alternative film cultures. The study contributes to the broader understanding of the arthouse scene in Istanbul and provides a foundation for further research on the intersection of cinema, culture, and society
Consumers and Service Robots: Power Relationships Amid Covid-19 Pandemic
Robotics significantly influence retail and consumer services. The COVID-19 pandemic further amplified the rise of service robots (SRs) through social distancing measures. While robots are embraced widely by retailers and service providers, consumers' interaction with SRs remains an intriguing avenue of research across contexts. By taking a relative social power perspective, we report on a series of pre- and intra-COVID-19 studies. Our findings suggest that Gen-Z consumers hold more positive attitudes towards SRs perceived as lower in power vis-a-vis the human user. The longitudinal nature of our study also reveals that while attitudes towards such low-power services turned more negative during the COVID-19 pandemic, attitudes towards SRs that are high in power vis-a-vis the human user remained stable. In practical terms, while Gen-Z consumers hold more positive attitudes towards low-power robots, such service providers also face the challenge of relatively changeable attitudes towards them, especially during crisis times
Morphotectonic Evolution of Selduk Graben in Development Process of Western Anatolian Grabens
Gurer, Omer Feyzi/0000-0001-7210-769XThe Selduk Graben is the name given to the young graben developed in the western tip of the Kuduk Menderes graben. It was a part of the main graben until a strike-slip fault zone cut and displaced it to the southwest during late Quaternary. From this time onward, it has had a semi-independent evolution. In the horsts bordering the graben, metamorphic basement rocks crop out. The fill of the graben consists of alluvium from the Kucuk Menderes River. The Selduk Graben is an asymmetrical graben. The bordering southern horst is more prominent than the northern one, where the normal faults form clear fault steps. Morphologically, the less distinct northern faults may thus be interpreted as antithetic faults, which have developed on the hanging wall of the major listric normal faults of the southern horst. The graben and the bordering horst were cut and displaced by several young strike-slip faults, which have made clear imprints in the morphology, including linear ridges, offset streams, etc. In the development sequence of Western Anatolian grabens, the Selduk Graben is one of the latest ones. The Kuduk Menderes Graben was opened earlier, during the Quaternary. It was located on the horst separating the Buyuk Menderes and Gediz grabens in this period. The elevated horst then collapsed. The Selduk Graben was situated at the western end of the Kuduk Menderes Graben during this period. Later, with the development of NW trending left-lateral strike-slip faults, together with conjugated faults along the coastal region of western Anatolia, the Selcuk Graben was separated from the Kucuk Menderes Graben and has since evolved semi-independently
